Canada has long had bragging rights to hockey, bacon and moose, but now it can claim something else: North America´s fourth-largest city. Chicago has been edged out by Toronto. You betcha it´s true, Chicagoans. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, our city is home to 2.71 million people to Toronto´s 2.79 million in 2012. Mexico City, New York and Los Angeles top the list. Chicago is still one of the top 10 largest cities in North America, and the population did increase by more than 11,000 residents between 2010 and 2011.

The Obama administration has gone to court to try to block a subpoena from the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York seeking White House documents about the government´s requirement of insurance coverage for birth control. The subpoena requesting documents from President Barack Obama and his senior advisers would be burdensome to fulfill, the administration said in a lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. Citing U.S. Supreme Court precedent, the suit also argues that civil subpoenas of the president´s executive office are inappropriate except in extraordinary circumstances.
There is no way around it. The March jobs report is dismal. Economists had expected the economy to add around 200k jobs last month. The Labor Department reported this morning, however, that the economy added only 88k jobs. Democrat operatives in the media are quickly spinning the bad economic news as the fault of the sequester, i.e. automatic government spending cuts. A closer look at the data show the cuts had almost no impact on the job market. Professional services, the sector of the economy most impacted by government contracts, increased hiring by 51k last month,
Just as retired General David Petraeus was starting down the road to redemption, FBI investigators descended on his home in Arlington, Virginia to interview the disgraced official. Agents spoke with the former CIA Director on Friday as part of the Bureau´s investigation into a possible security breach during his affair with biographer, Paula Broadwell. His extramarital dalliance plunged him into the spotlight last fall and ultimately lead him to resign from the Agency in November. Scroll down for video. Since he stepped down from his post at the CIA on November 9, he has kept a low profile
A U.S. Army training instructor listed Evangelical Christianity and Catholicism as examples of religious extremism along with Al Qaeda and Hamas during a briefing with an Army Reserve unit based in Pennsylvania, Fox News has learned. “We find this offensive to have Evangelical Christians and the Catholic Church to be listed among known terrorist groups,” said Ron Crews, executive director of the Chaplain Alliance for Religious Liberty. “It is dishonorable for any U.S. military entity to allow this type of wrongheaded characterization.” The incident occurred during an Army Reserve Equal Opportunity training brief on extremism.
Hi I’m Kansas Governor Sam Brownback. A week ago nearly a third of the world’s population celebrated Easter, the resurrection of Jesus. New life. Well, we need new life in our nation and economy. Washington is broke. Big spending programs are running out of money and change is coming. The ideas on how to fix the federal government are now percolating in the states, 30 of which are led by Republican governors. You see, you don’t change America by changing Washington. With video.
Rich Lowery in the New York Post (4-02-2013) accuses the liberals of being the new climate deniers, considering that they don´t recognize that there´s been no global warming for the last fifteen years. This shouldn´t surprise Lowery. When the liberals hang onto the neck of a cause, they don´t let go. They have ignored murders, rapes, wars, nuclear proliferation, and everything wrong with the world to focus in on their little area -- the horror of carbon emissions. You´d think liberals would have learned from their earlier panic about overpopulation
Hi, everybody. Our top priority as a nation, and my top priority as President, must be doing everything we can to reignite the engine of America’s growth: a rising, thriving middle class. That’s our North Star. That must drive every decision we make. Now, yesterday, we learned that our businesses created 95,000 new jobs last month. That’s about 500,000 new jobs this year, and nearly 6.5 million new jobs over the past three years. But we’ve got more work to do.
A senior Eurocrat sparked outrage last night after calling for the phrase “illegal immigrant” to be banned from the European Union.[Snip] She has instructed EU Commission staff to refer to foreigners who break border control laws as “irregular migrants” or simply “people” instead. But her attempt to dictate how the issue of immigration is discussed was savaged last night. UK Independence Party leader Nigel Farage said: “Now the EU is even trying to change the language. “This sounds like something straight out of the pages of George Orwell’s Animal Farm. It shows that what we are dealing with here
It´s one thing for President Obama to be cocky and overstate his prowess at governing. People are used to politicians grabbing credit, and besides, you can always rationalize when it comes to explaining why things didn´t quite work out as you claimed they would - "the sequester ate my recovery" being the latest successful-enough example. But sports is something else. The basketball either goes through the hoop or it doesn´t. That´s why President Obama´s history of braggadocio regarding his prowess at hoops is having a potent effect on his overall public image, especially with those who are favorably inclined to him.
His house, his booze, his drugs, his women and his 17 children were paid for by a benefits system meant to be a safety net for the truly needy.[Snip] This was one of the most horrible crimes committed against children in Britain in recent years. It was cynical. It was calculating. And it was done out of malice in a ham-fisted plot which went wrong. The trial spoke volumes about the sheer nastiness of the individuals involved. But it also lifted the lid on the bleak and often grotesque world of the welfare benefit scroungers--of whom there are not dozens,
This country is an embarrassment. We can’t do anything right, least of all corruption. Look, when Venezuela’s populist demagogue Hugo Chavez died, word was he’d somehow accumulated an estate worth $2 billion. In the old days when the PRI party ruled Mexico uninterruptedly, every president got a single six-year term — and promptly retired at its close as a billionaire. And that was when a billion was real money.
Former News Corp president Peter Chernin has bid around $500 million for Hulu, the online video streaming service he helped create in 2007, according to two sources with knowledge of Hulu´s sale process. The website, jointly controlled by News Corp and Walt Disney Co, reached out to potential buyers in March after initially contemplating a deal in which one would buy out the other. It is not clear whether that transaction is still being contemplated.
Beyonce and Jay-Z celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary in Cuba this week. The couple, who married on April 4, 2008, took in the sights of Old Havana, visited a school, dined on a rooftop terrace and strolled the fan-filled streets in their island best.(snip).The power couple declined to answer journalists´ questions about their visit to the island nation, but some outlets are reporting that the moguls are there as tourists, though that would be illegal because of the half-century embargo the U.S. has on the Communist country. However, the Miami Herald said Washington has issued special licenses for
The clowns who frequent Sacramento´s seedy bars and whorehouses, otherwise known as the members of the California State Legislature, have pulled off another midnight raid deep into the pocketbooks of all Californians. At least street thugs and bank robbers are a one-time occurrence; but these perfumed lapdogs of the special interests that ruin...er... run the Golden State have permanently attached a suction hose to our bank accounts.
President Obama´s decision last year to allow young people living in the U.S. illegally to stay and work marked the biggest shift in immigration policy in decades, hailed as a landmark step toward the American dream for a generation of immigrants. But months later, many immigrants are having vastly different reactions to the change depending on where they live, and they aren´t flocking to the program at the levels the government originally expected. A handful of Republican-led states are blocking basic benefits for those in the program, denying beneficiaries identification cards, driver´s licenses,
After lengthy investigations, the Pentagon has determined that three Army generals committed misconduct in separate incidents, adding to an unusually long list of senior military commanders who have been censured over the past year.On Friday, defense officials confirmed that Army Maj. Two officials familiar with the case said Baker was investigated for allegedly groping a female civilian employee after he had been drinking.
A coral reef in Northern Australia severely damaged by warming seas has managed to completely heal itself in just 12 years, stunned researchers have found. The team found that being left alone to breed on its own was key. The discovery raises hope that other damaged reefs could ´regenerate´. The new research shows that an isolated reef off the northwest coast of Australia that was severely damaged by a period of warming in 1998. It was hit by coral bleaching, caused by higher water temperatures that break down the coral´s symbiotic relationship with algae that provide food for coral growth.
Young supporters hold signs outside Hillary Rodham Clinton´s speeches urging her to run for president. Audiences listen with rapt attention as she discusses the plight of women and girls in developing countries. Even a long-expected book deal announcement generates lots of chatter. Not long after Clinton stepped down as President Barack Obama´s secretary of state, the "will she or won´t she" question is already following her around like the activists who held dark blue "Ready for Hillary" signs outside speeches at the Kennedy Center in Washington and New York´s Lincoln Center. This past week, Clinton came off a two-month break
News outlets have gone to great lengths to catalogue the disturbing contents of Adam Lanza's bedroom. The accused perpetrator of the Newtown massacre had a cache of violent collectibles that included a plethora of guns and ammunition, along with nearly a dozen knives and three samurai swords, among other things. The media focus has been almost exclusively on these externalities, The media focus has been almost exclusively on these externalities, with very little effort made to take an internal inventory of the thought processes

The Obama administration appeared eager Thursday to downplay the North Korean military’s latest threat that it has the final authority to carry out “cutting-edge, smaller, lighter and diversified” nuclear strikes on the United States.“This is just the latest in a long line of aggressive statements,” (Snip)the recent tension between Washington and Pyongyang “does not need to get hotter.”The remarks were the first public reaction from the Obama administration since Wednesday’s claim by the North Korean military that the “moment of explosion is approaching fast” with the possibility of war breaking out “today or tomorrow.”
President Obama´s biggest gaffe yesterday when speaking of California Attorney General Kamala Harris was not in flirtatiously complimenting her as "the best-looking attorney general," but in introducing an observation from the system of beauty into a forum that was about the system of power. What´s that, you say? Irin Carmon does a great job in Salon in laying out the bounds of propriety for when it´s appropriate to talk about a woman´s looks as a general matter. But I´ve long felt we lack a solid theoretical underpinning for easily discussing these issues, and why precisely it is that
