No, this isn´t another one of those space telescope shots of distant star clusters whose light has been traveling toward Earth for millions of light-years ever since Larry King´s birth. This photo is actually taken back down at Earth, by an Infrared Imaging Suite. It´s aboard the NPP satellite whose fiery, night-time launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base we described here 16 months ago. From 521 miles high the two-ton satellite flashes around the globe photographing every square inch of the planet every day, creating a digitalized history of the globe´s environment for future scientists to compare with theirs.

WASHINGTON — Democratic Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke told The Daily Caller that “no additional enforcement” is needed on the Southwest border, despite the U.S.-Mexico border remaining the “primary gateway” for moving illegal drugs into the U.S. “Because we no longer have an active metric from DHS and border security can mean different things to different people, I just want to point to the facts. The safest cities in America are along the border. The border is safer than the rest of the country,” O’Rourke told TheDC Wednesday after a Border Advocacy Day event where participants argued

Vice President Joe Biden is amazed when whites try to act like they know what blacks have been through, but given a chance this week to brag on his part to end Jim Crow laws, he bit: he helped to desegregate movie theaters as a kid. Biden, who grew up in Pennsylvania and Delaware, hosted an event at the Naval Observatory vice presidential residence Wednesday night to celebrate Black History Month. After being introduced by Georgia Democratic Rep. John Lewis, one of the original 13 Freedom Riders attacked by the Ku Klux Klan, the vice president

Obama has lost all

This has not been a good week for President Obama’s campaign to use $44 billion in automatic spending cuts as leverage to force Republicans to vote for higher taxes. First, legendary journalist Bob Woodward dismantled the White House’s account of how the sequester was created. Now, Woodward is telling Politico that the White House responded by threatening him if he went forward with his claim. Then Education Secretary Arne Duncan was caught in a baldfaced lie about the sequester causing teacher layoffs. On Face the Nation last Sunday Duncan told CBS, “As many as 40,000 teachers could lose

New Yorkers who want to be naked at the beach this summer might want to head to New Jersey. The last major sanctuary in the state to frolic in the ocean without a swimsuit, Lighthouse Beach on Fire Island, will begin enforcing a state ban on nudity. “Twenty years ago, people would go down there to sunbathe,” said Lena Koschmann, the chief ranger of Fire Island National Seashore, a unit of the National Park Service. “Fast forward to today. You have thousands of people and you have more of a party atmosphere. There has also been an increase

Its history dates back to one of America’s founding fathers, when George Washington selected the location for the White House, and in the two centuries it’s been in existence, the People’s House has boarded every president save the Father of His Country. But during the Great Depression and in the two world wars, the annual budget for repairing the White House was drastically cut and ideas of renovation pushed to the back burner, meaning that all but the most simple patch-ups were ignored. During the Truman presidency, a near gut-renovation was deemed a necessity,

Van Cliburn became an international cultural hero when he won a Cold War-era piano competition in the Soviet Union and then rocketed to unheard-of stardom for a classical musician in the U.S. Mr. Cliburn, who died Wednesday at age 78 near Fort Worth, Texas, stunned the world in 1958 when, soon after the Soviet Union had launched the first satellite in orbit, he won that country´s first International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition—intended to showcase Soviet talent. The same year, his recording of Tchaikovsky´s Piano Concerto No. 1 became the first classical album to sell more than a million copies.

Wednesday night, in the aftermath of the blow-up regarding the White House’s email to Bob Woodward suggesting he would "regret" his reporting of sequestration, White House Senior Adviser David Plouffe took to twitter to bash Woodward as a past-his-prime hack: That, of course, is the same theme that the entire Obama-supporting media from BuzzFeed to Slate suggested. The White House-coordinated media sure knows its cues.

You may have noticed in the news recently that the folks we just sent to Washington to do the people´s business, aren´t. In fact, lead from behind by President Obama, they´re not doing much of anything except trying to dodge blame for not getting much of anything done. You may recall the "fiscal cliff" we were driving over not so long ago. Now, there´s "sequestration," which has to do with -- read this carefully now -- mandatory cuts of future increases in federal spending.

Two corporate-style jets that the FBI persuaded Congress to lease for fighting global terrorism have instead been used the majority of the time to ferry Attorney General Eric Holder, his predecessor in the Bush administration and FBI Director Robert Mueller on business and personal trips at an expense of millions of dollars to taxpayers, an investigation has found. The bureau´s state-the-art, sleek Gulfstream V jets logged 60 percent of their hours between 2007 and 2011 on "non-mission flights" that cost taxpayers $11.4 million, according to an investigation

The feds say Sarah Palin is firing blanks with her claim that the government is “stockpiling bullets” for potential civil unrest in case the country defaults on its loans. While government agencies are, in fact, purchasing large amounts of ammunition, they are doing so for training exercises and shooting ranges, according to federal officials. The Washington Post last month summed up the Department of Homeland Security’s buying of more than 1.6 billion rounds of ammunition for training with an article headlined, “Not so sinister: Homeland Security is stockpiling ammo for target practice.” And last summer, the Social Security Administration’s Office

John McCain and Lindsey Graham were almost giddy when they emerged from a White House meeting on immigration reform on Tuesday. The Senate duo insist President Obama understands Republican concerns about border security as critical to getting immigration legislation through Congress. “It’s one of the best meetings I’ve ever had with the president,” gushed Mr. Graham, South Carolina Republican, one of the four Republican senators in the bipartisan Gang of Eight looking to craft an immigration-reform bill. “I think the president’s very sincere in wanting a bill, and wanted to know what he could do to help.”

This year, Hollywood hit award pay dirt for political dramas inspired by American history. Unlike “The Avengers” — the top-grossing superhero movie — best-picture nominees “Argo,” “Lincoln” and “Zero Dark Thirty” featured authentic, determined and courageous Americans who endured adversity and mortal danger to overcome morally inferior antagonists. Though we´re living through the umpteenth act of a gory political spectacle involving the U.S. budget, Think Again if you expect that Quentin Tarantino will adapt it for the silver screen. Devoid of heroes or valiant rescues, the drama serially unfolding in Washington isn´t even telenovela-worthy, particularly the latest installment known as the

Never let it be said that President Obama has failed to spend time with Republican leaders in seeking an alternative to automatic budget cuts that are due to hit most federal departments Friday. On Wednesday, for example, the president gave GOP lawmakers as much as seven minutes, a rare face-to-face encounter that the White House described as a “meeting.” The White House’s characterization of this momentary huddle at the Capitol as a meeting illuminates Mr. Obama’s strategy in dealing with Republicans on the budget cuts and other fiscal deadlines. With speeches and other staged events, the president has tried

Benito Mussolini is one of history´s most reviled men. He was also a socialist. Mussolini began as a socialist;. Alessandro Mussolini, his father, preached a revolutionary socialism of Italian nationalism, anarchism, socialism, and communism. Alessandro had a great influence on Benito, and shaped his early political views. But in later years Benito determined that socialism was a failure because it did not recognize nationalism and natural inferiority. These revelations led to his expulsion from the socialist party and his rebirth as a fascist. In an effort to evade military service, Mussolini fled to Switzerland in 1902,

The Morning Joe panel was tough today on the Obama White House for threatening Bob Woodward by telling him he would "regret" his reporting that it was the Obama administration that had devised the sequester,   In the course of the opening segment, various panel members described the Obama White House response as "mickey mouse," "pathetic" and "childish." But at the same time, a theme emerged that there was nothing unusual about a White House trying to intimidate reporters.  Mark Halperin said "the Bush White House regularly would engage in the same kind of tactics." Never underestimate the White House’s ability to mislead voters or the willingness of lefty pundits and mainstream media journalists (some overlap there) to be misled. The New York Times reports: President Obama’s team concedes that the almost certain arrival of across-the-board budget cuts on Friday will not immediately produce the politically dramatic layoffs and airport delays that the administration has been warning about for days. But White House strategists say they believe that a constant drip-drip-drip of bad news will slowly emerge in Congressional districts across the country in the weeks ahead, generating negative headlines

New Yorkers lie through their teeth in online dating profiles, fibbing about physical stature, race, wealth — and even pregnancy, a new study found. In one case, a woman from Long Island claimed to be her more-attractive sibling, said Whatsyourprice.com spokeswoman Jennifer Gwynn, whose company surveyed members across the country. “She gained weight after pregnancy — so she uses her skinny twin’s photo to get dates,” Gwynn said. Other female fibbers simply failed to mention crucial facts, like the gal who claimed to be a 115-pound beauty, then showed up in her second trimester — without even hinting she was pregnant.

A nine-foot bronze statue of the civil rights icon and Alabama native, Rosa Parks was unveiled in the U.S. Capitol building yesterday. President Obama spoke at the dedication ceremony rightly asserting that Parks´ activism began long before she was arrested for refusing to give up her seat on the bus to a white man in 1955. In fact, according to Professor Robin D.G. Kelley, who has written on the Communist Party´s involvement in the early days of the civil rights movement in Alabama, Parks and her husband were regular attendees at communist meetings in the 1930´s.
