Fans, officials and teams are ready to go racing today and the Daytona 500 is scheduled to begin as planned at 1 p.m. Officials with the Speedway and NASCAR are conducting two press conferences this morning to discuss further details. Saturday night´s crash injured at least 28 people, including 14 who were taken to area hospitals by ambulance and 14 who were treated at

At 11:42 a.m. on Feb. 14, a conservative online magazine called The Washington Free Beacon posted a dispatch about a speech Chuck Hagel gave in 2007 in which it said he called the State Department “an adjunct to the Israeli foreign minister’s office.” The report was based on “contemporaneous” notes an attendee posted online. An hour later on the floor of the United States Senate, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina urgently cited that statement as another reason to delay Mr. Hagel’s nomination as defense secretary.

Shocking footage filmed from the stands at Daytona International Speedway shows the moment when debris from yesterday´s massive multi-car pile-up flew into the packed crowd injuring at least 33 fans - including a 14-year-old boy who is in a critical condition. The terrifying scene unfolds during the last lap as Kyle Larson´s car is catapulted by the crash into a catch fence separating the tens-of thousands of fans from the track - almost shearing the car in half. And as the fiery wrecks filter past the section of the speedway hit, the footage filmed by spectator Tyler Andersen

I suppose it depends on your point of view. If you lose one fifth of your pay because you´re a federal employee and are furloughed one day a week, it´s pretty bad. But is Obama right about the effects of the sequester? He says that it would be "a huge blow to middle-class families and our economy as a whole." Oh, really? Bill Wilson writing in Forbes: According to Obama, the sequester would represent "a huge blow to middle-class families and our economy as a whole." Obama´s White House has also referred to the sequester as "devastating," saying

The Afghan president has ordered US special forces to leave Wardak province within two weeks over allegations of disappearances and torture. The measures were being taken due to the actions of Afghans considered to be part of US special forces, said a spokesman for Hamid Karzai. The strategically significant, central province of Wardak has been the recent focus of counter-insurgency operations. A US spokesman said it took all allegations of misconduct seriously. But he said he could not comment specifically on this latest development.

As the RAF´s Central Flying School celebrates its centenary year, BBC News looks back at the career of the daring and inspirational war veteran who became its icon. "They´ve only seven hours flying, sir--and it´s bloody murder." It was the summer of 1916--the early days of the Battle of the Somme--and squadron leader Major Robert Smith-Barry was venting his frustration at the commander of the Royal Flying Corps (RFC), in France. Although considered a brilliant pilot himself, Smith-Barry was deeply concerned about some of the British recruits being pitched against highly-trained German fighter squadrons. "They have barely learned to fly,

Last May, when the Revel casino opened in Atlantic City, the traffic light out front was reset on a four-minute cycle — in anticipation of epic traffic jams, one taxi driver says. Today, that cabby turns off his engine at the light to save gas. He’s one of only a handful of cars waiting. Revel was suppose to be a new kind of casino — no low-cost buffets, no smoking and a casino on a different floor than reception, with windows that looked on to the best Atlantic City beach, so gamblers did not lose track of place and time.

The American dream is hiding in the unlikeliest of places — the toy box. The toy industry has always been a repository for national culture. And, unlike myriad other economic and social indicators, this one speaks well of America’s future. That was apparent at last week’s 110th Annual Toy Fair in New York City, where the entrepreneurial spirit thrived. Each year at the fair, around 7,500 toys make their debut. While many are introduced by big companies such as Mattel or Hasbro, other toys make it to market because of the creativity and capitalistic ethos of individual inventors.

Alcohol use accounted for roughly 3.5 percent of all cancer deaths in the United States in 2009, a new study finds. This amounts to nearly 20,000 Americans who lost their lives to cancer that year as a result of drinking.[snip]"Alcohol is a known cancer-causing agent in humans, but it has been severely overlooked as a preventable cause of cancer deaths," said study co-author Timothy Naimi, a physician and alcohol researcher at Boston University Medical Center. "People need to know the impact of alcohol on cancer deaths because it´s another reason why they should not drink excessively."

I was 5 years old and strapped to a tall pole across from my 3-year-old sister. The pole, a mast for a sail that was never very useful, was in the center of a raft being thrown about the Florida Straits. I don’t remember the nights, but I’m told they were so dark my mother, sitting between us, could not see us, but only feel us. I don’t remember being wet or cold, but my parents tell me the waves rolling over us were about 20 feet high. I don’t remember the sun, but after four days at sea,

The Nigerian president spent $1million of aid money to entice international popstars such as Beyonce and Jay-Z to perform at a music festival in the poverty-stricken country, a media source reported. A letter stamped and signed by Bayelsa State officials in 2006 revealed that President Goodluck Jonathan, then the Governor of the state, released 150million Nigerian Nairas from the state’s poverty alleviation fund for the inaugural ThisDay Music Festival in the city of Lagos in 2006, according to SaharaReporters. Shutdown was only avoided because a gas-fired station due to close by next winter came to the rescue. Last night experts warned that life-threatening blackouts are increasingly likely as “we head downhill--fast”. Alistair Buchanan, the outgoing head of energy regulator Ofgem said: “On Wednesday, January 16, due to unplanned outages and cold weather, National Grid had to find power to supply roughly a million homes to keep the lights on. “Fawley, an oil-fired plant in Hampshire, was one of the power stations that responded. Next winter Fawley will not be there.” And as a spell of bitter cold once

After 121 years of lobbying, letter-writing campaigns and law-abiding protests, the Sierra Club is retooling itself for the flash-mob age — and showing an increasingly aggressive edge. That edge was on display last week, when the Sierra Club’s two top leaders and 46 other climate activists zip-tied themselves to the White House gates to protest the proposed Keystone XL oil pipeline. The organization called it the first time it had suspended its decades-long policy against club-sanctioned civil disobedience. That protest followed a trend in which the 1.4 million-member organization has toughened its

Since the reelection of President Obama, liberals have made some bold admissions. Commentators like Touré Neblett of MSNBC’s The Cycle have enthusiastically and repeatedly defended the president’s authority to launch drones against anyone, including American citizens, if he suspects that they are “trying to kill us.” At no point in his several defenses did Touré reconcile his position with once-popular Constitutional precepts that every person should be presumed innocent until proven guilty, and know the charges and evidence against him, and have the right to a fair trial. Neither did he explain why ordinary Americans should suspend their longstanding

No one emerges with much credit, so to speak, from the Moody´s downgrade. It was, in retrospect, silly of the Chancellor to have made such a big deal of Britain´s credit worthiness. His lapse of judgment, however, is as nothing compared to the unlovely enthusiasm with which Ed Balls has greeted the news. The Shadow Chancellor did his best to look sombre, but couldn´t conceal his pleasure. Quite apart from appearing unpatriotic, he reminded everyone of how unserious Labour is when it comes to deficit reduction. What has gone wrong? Quite simply, spending remains too high. Their chosen career paths have led them, not in the direction of making as much money for themselves as they can, but rather to promote ethical and radical solutions to some of the most important issues which face the planet
