WASHINGTON — Seats at President Obama´s State of the Union address Tuesday night will be filled with the legislative priorities of a bitterly divided Congress. Efforts to humanize intensifying national policy battles will bring some strange bedfellows to the address, where a survivor of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre will find herself in the same audience as Ted Nugent, a rocker turned gun rights activist who was the subject of a Secret Service investigation last year after making controversial remarks about Obama. Nugent´s invitation, which came from Rep. Steve Stockman (R-Texas), was announced Monday, about the time

RUSH: I was dead serious. We talked about this yesterday. The Democrats, Obama, they can´t win in the arena of ideas. That´s not what their campaigns are about. They can´t even give voice honestly to their ideas, so what they do is simply discredit, tarnish, destroy, ruin, whatever word you want to use, their opponents. And they do it, in the case of the presidential campaign, there was two to three months in the spring to summer where all that Romney stuff ran. Romney didn´t have any money.

Two officers have been shot during a raging gun battle with Christopher Dorner, the fugitive ex-LAPD cop suspected of killing three people in Southern California. Early reports from the scene say Dorner is currently holed up in a group of buildings in a remote area of San Bernardino National Forest, holding heavily-armed police officers at bay. Hundreds of gunshots could be heard coming from the woods when officers engaged Dorner, who promised in an online manifesto to ´wage war´ against police and kill any officers who tried to stop him. Safer alternatives exist to diclofenac, say researchers at the Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry, who want it banned worldwide. Diclofenac, like ibuprofen, is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug or ‘NSAID’. It is often prescribed after surgery and to combat arthritic pain, when ibuprofen is not strong enough. It can also be purchased over the counter at a pharmacy without a prescription, for example in the branded form of Voltarol Pain-eze tablets. But two years ago the Barts researchers found that it was linked with a 40 per cent increased risk of heart attack and stroke.

RUSH: Yesterday, ladies and gentlemen, right here on this program, we had a sound bite for you. It was Nancy Pelosi saying, "We don´t have a spending problem." She said we have a budget deficit problem. I intended to make a point about this yesterday. As we do almost every day on this program, I had a call or I brought the subject up myself about my optimism, about how, at some point all of this is gonna bottom out and we´re gonna rebound. And I´ve been honest with you about that optimism.

The Shin Bet, Israel Police and IDF have exposed and arrested a terror cell whose members infiltrated an IDF base on December 21, 2012, attacked a soldier on sentry duty and stole his weapon, an M-16. The cell belonged to the Fatah movement, which is headed by Palestinian Authority chairman Mahmoud Abbas. Its members are residents of the Kalandia and a-Ram neighborhoods of Jerusalem. It is made up of five men aged 25 to 37, one of whom is an Israeli citizen. The attack took place at the Rama base in northern Jerusalem. Rulon Gardner´s epic upset of Russian wrestling great Alexander Karelin in 2000 remains one of the most compelling moments of the modern Olympics. Starting in 2020, youngsters looking to Gardner and Karelin for inspiration won´t have a chance to excel on the sport´s biggest stage. Gardner and nearly everyone else associated with the sport in the U.S. were jolted Tuesday when International Olympic Committee leaders dropped wrestling from the Summer Games. The move is set to take effect for the 2020 Olympics and eliminates a sport that´s been a staple of both the ancient and modern games.

The Washington Post´s Greg Sargent on Tuesday seemed shocked that Joe Scarborough, who he paints as the voice of moderation, agrees more with Democrats on deficit issues than Republicans. On the subject of fiscal problems and the debt, the MSNBC host told Sargent, "I don’t expect to be cheering House Republicans anytime soon." The left-leaning Post writer asked if, on deficit issues, Scarborough´s "views are indeed more in line with Dems than with Republicans." The cable host replied, "yes." He then went on to attack Barack Obama from the left: "I don’t see the Democrats focusing seriously

"He even carries himself a little bit differently," said one confidant who, like others, asked not to be identified discussing the president. He is relaxed, more voluble and even more confident than usual, these people say, freer to drop profanities or dismiss others´ ideas--enough that even some supporters fear the potential for hubris. . . . One of my least favorite pundits is the shrill and self-parodic conservative Washington Post blogger Jennifer Rubin. But Rubin had a point when she criticized “liberal media types” for lecturing the Roman Catholic Church “about the need, you know, to get with the modern world and stop all that fussing about abortion, contraception and women priests.” Rubin asked: “ On what basis do secular journalists assert the authority to lecture a religion on its tenets? Passengers on the nightmare Carnival cruise ship stranded in the Gulf of Mexico are using patchy cellphone coverage today to reveal that ´conditions are getting worse by the hour´. Some of the 4,200 people on board reported that cabin carpets are soaked in urine, passengers are sleeping in tents on deck and scarce food supplies has reduced them to eating cold onion sandwiches. The ship has been stranded since Sunday after a fire in the engine room crippled the power system. The first tug boat reached the Carnival Triumph on Monday night and it is being towed to Mobile, Alabama

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said Tuesday he will not honor requests from Republican senators to hold up the nomination of Chuck Hagel to head the Defense Department. This will force Republicans who want to delay Hagel´s nomination to be on the Senate floor to object to an effort to schedule a vote. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said over the weekend he would hold up Hagel and John Brennan, President Obama´s pick to head the Central Intelligence Agency, unless the administration provides more information about it´s response to the terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya.

Ewwwww. That about sums up how people are describing conditions aboard the Carnival Triumph Tuesday as tugboats slowly drag the stricken cruise ship toward Alabama -- and freedom for its 3,143 passengers. Some on the ship reported sewage sloshing around in hallways, flooded rooms and trouble getting enough to eat after a fire in the ship´s engine room Sunday left it drifting in the Gulf of Mexico. Passengers dragged their mattresses onto the ship´s open deck to stay cool and get away from the nasty smells inside. WASHINGTON -In his State of the Union speech Tuesday, President Obama will announce plans to withdraw half the U.S. troops deployed in Afghanistan over the next year, a steep reduction that reflects his determination to end the American role in the 11-year-old conflict, a senior administration official said. About 34,000 Americans will be withdrawn over the next 12 months and "further reductions will continue through the end of 2014," when nearly all U.S. troops are scheduled to leave, the official said in a statement released by the White House. Top U.S. commanders in Afghanistan had sought to retain

On Tuesday, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced that he’d be pushing for new gun control in the city of Chicago, even though it is the most heavily gun-controlled municipality in the country. Emanuel will be hosting President Obama on Friday, where Obama will no doubt shift blame for Chicago’s gun crime problem from the city and onto surrounding areas, despite their lower rates of crime. Said Emanuel: The worst thing would be to say let’s not discuss this, because if we, Chicago, can actually lead the way to commonsense gun laws, commonsense enforcement, and an honest discussion

United States officials have signed off on Chinese oil giant CNOOC’s $15.1 billion purchase of the Canadian oil company Nexen, a deal that triggered U.S. review because Nexen has oil-and-gas assets in the Gulf of Mexico. Nexen announced Tuesday that the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) has approved the transaction, and that the deal “now has all of the requisite approvals to proceed to close.” CFIUS is a Treasury Department-led interagency panel that reviews foreign purchases of U.S. assets if the transactions could affect national security.
