CBO director: Debt will be

changes to entitlements or broad
tax hikes
Washington Examiner, by Philip Klein    Original Article

Throughout his presidency, President Obama has advanced the idea that the nation’s mounting debt problem could be solved by “modest adjustments” to entitlement programs and asking wealthy taxpayers to pay just a little bit more. But in Senate testimony today, Congressional Budget Office director Doug Elmendorf communicated that it wasn’t quite that easy. Under questioning from Sen. Ron Johnson, who highlighted the dire state of Medicare and Social Security finances, Elmendorf stated that putting the budget on a sustainable path would require major reforms to entitlement programs or massive tax increases that would hit the middle class.

The Marriott Marquis, the 50-story convention hotel in Times Square, sits atop some of the most valuable land in all of New York City, if not the world. But because of a lease signed by the Giuliani administration in 1998, Marriott can buy the property from the city for only $19.9 million, one-tenth of its current $193 million value, according to a new audit by the city comptroller, John C. Liu. Mr. Liu said the problems with the 1998 lease could end up costing taxpayers $344.9 million in lost rent and proceeds from the sale of the property. Marriott, whose Marquis Times Square generates more revenue

With stock market indices having crawled back to all-time highs, highs previously attained 13 years ago, there´s been the predictable talk about a Federal Reserve ignited rally. This absurd thinking populates a great deal of market commentary at the moment, not to mention that Fed Chairman Bernanke naturally believes it. Readers shouldn´t be fooled. The alleged logic underlying the above-mentioned presumption is that with all the dollars being created, they must have a place to go; the place being the stock market. Apologists for and at the Fed add on that the purpose of low rates is to force

A star of the reality show Storage Wars has committed suicide a day after he was arrested on drug charges. Mark Balelo, who had made frequent appearances on the television show, was found dead of presumed carbon monoxide poisoning on Monday morning when his co-worker discovered his body in his car that he parked inside the auction house garage. Though carbon monoxide poisoning seems likely since the engine of his car was left running, a full autopsy will be completed on Tuesday. TMZ reports that Balelo was arrested on Saturday for an unspecified drug-related offense.

A government limited to few things can probably do those things well, and thus it´s likely to be trusted. A government that tries to do many things, might do them badly, and be less highly regarded. Last week, I noted that Americans are losing confidence in their government: According to a new Pew poll, more than half see it as a threat to their freedom. That´s a troubling number. But why have things gotten so bad? Well, perhaps it´s because government actually has become a bigger threat to freedom. There´s plenty of support for that notion,

Hattiesburg, Miss. - Sunday dawned like any other day on Pearl Street, a place where a mixture of families and students live in primarily rental houses near Westminster Presbyterian Church. But that was before a twister 20 miles wide carved a path across three counties leaving 570 houses, businesses and mobile homes damaged or destroyed. More than 80 people were treated for injuries, Gov. Phil Bryant said at a news conference Monday, but no lives were lost and no one was unaccounted for. On Sunday morning, Westminster filled with worshipers. A group of people came back

Economics: Venezuela has devalued its currency, joining Iran, Argentina and others whose wars on math brought the same result. Some call this a "restorative." It´s not. It´s what happens when big government hits a wall. Venezuela´s monster 47% devaluation from 4.3 to 6.3 bolivars to the dollar, reportedly ordered by President Hugo Chavez from his hospital bed in Cuba, marks the reckoning for his regime´s big-spending ways in Venezuela´s low-growth economy. It was about as predictable as a crash from a runaway train, given his mad-lunatic war on economics — his lethal combination of welfare spending, destruction of the private sector

Our politics have become so polarized and corrupted that a president of the United States cannot even attend an event devoted to drawing people closer to God and bridge partisan and cultural divides without being lectured about his policies. Last Thursday at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C., Dr. Ben Carson, director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, and a 2008 recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, broke with a 61-year-old tradition and publicly disagreed with some of the president´s policies, such as "ObamaCare," taxation and the national debt.

On the fifth anniversary of the assassination of Imad Mughniyah, a.k.a. “The Iranian Jackal,” much new information about the hunt for the terrorist most wanted by Mossad and the FBI has emerged. It’s a story of high-tech surveillance and old-fashioned espionage, and it’s just starting to be truly told now. Imad Mughniyah was 20 years old when he made his debut on the international terrorist scene in 1983, with a series of spectacular and deadly bombings aimed at Western forces in Lebanon.

John Guandolo, who retired from the FBI in 2008, said in a radio interview that John Brennan - who has been nominated by Barack Obama as the new director of the CIA - visited the Islamic holy cities of Mecca and Medina accompanied by Saudi officials who may have persuaded him to convert. Mr Guandolo´s tale echoes elements of the plot of hit show Homeland, in which

Pyongyang - The Democratic People´s Republic of Korea (DPRK) said Tuesday that its nuclear test was an act of self-defense against the United States´ hostility. It is "natural just measure for self-defense to react to the U.S. ever-increasing nuclear threat with nuclear deterrence," a spokesman for the DPRK´s Foreign Ministry said in a statement released by the official news agency KCNA. The DPRK´s patience has "reached its limit as the U.S. intensified such hostile act", the spokesman said, warning to "take the second and third stronger steps in succession" if the U.S., its "sworn enemy," continues hostility.

Cheryl Russell, who lives across the street from the suspect's home, said Tuesday that she looked out a window from her home and saw the man shooting at vehicles at two locations. Russell described the shooter as "very nonchalant, just very calm."

President Obama in his State of the Union address Tuesday will announce that 34,000 American troops will return from Afghanistan within a year, according to a source familiar with the president’s speech. That figure represents roughly half of the U.S. troops now in Afghanistan. Obama will tout the winding down of the war there as part of his commitment to lessen the U.S. footprint in the volatile Middle East. Last month, Obama and Afghan President Hamid Karzai announced a plan to speed the transition of combat operations to Afghan forces.

Lindsey Graham was supposed to be the Dick Lugar of the 2014 cycle. Instead, he may be the Orrin Hatch. Even tea partiers in South Carolina admit he probably has a smooth path to the nomination and then to reelection. Graham has consistently irked conservatives. He voted to confirm Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor. He supports the DREAM Act and was one of the chief architects of the 2007 immigration legislation that was widely derided by conservatives as an amnesty. The Club for Growth — which helped topple Indiana’s Lugar and Utah’s Bob Bennett — announced last fall that Graham

When Kazakhstan’s riot police slaughtered dozens of striking oil field workers last year, Atlantic Council affiliate Joshua Foust rushed to discredit the reports. Foust, a member of the Atlantic Council’s Young Atlanticist Working Group, attacked critics of the government-backed crackdown, claiming they were relying on a “completely invented body count” to “politicize” the incident. Foust’s efforts were just one piece of a broader effort by the Atlantic Council to burnish the reputation of the Kazakh government, recently revealed as a donor to the think tank.

The mother and daughter, according to police, assaulted a 15-year-old girl, striking her with fists, feet and a combination lock. Teacher Kim Kilby suffered a black eye in the scuffle.
