Two Cheers for Rebranding

Ever since Mitt Romney lost the presidential election, there’s been a lot of talk about how the Republican party needs to “rebrand” itself. Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal wants, among other things, for the GOP to stop being “the stupid party.” Representative Paul Ryan has concluded that the watchword for the Republican party needs to be “prudence.” Senator Marco Rubio is the frontman for the most tangible aspect of the rebranding effort: getting on the right side of the immigration issue. In the process, he’s become something of the de facto point person for the party. The latest entrant into this effort:

The photo of an adorable toddler saluting her father as he prepared to leave on his nine-month deployment to Afghanistan has touched the hearts of people across the country. Daniella Moen, 3, wanted to be like all the other soldiers who joined her dad, U.S. Army Chaplain Captain Dan Moen, when the national anthem played at his farewell ceremony at Fort Drum, NY on January 11. The girl´s mother, Sasha, was on hand to capture the tender photograph, which has gone viral and become an inspiration to the thousands of military families waiting for their loved ones to come home.

According to Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, as reported at The Weekly Standard, President Obama was completely aloof from the events in Libya on September 11. He neither asked nor ordered anything. He did not respond to information sent to the White House. He was not involved at all, during the seven-plus-hour attack that resulted in the deaths of four American government employees, including an ambassador. A few months back, when, for the sake of argument, we were all giving Obama the benefit of the doubt on being human, albeit wretchedly so, I felt compelled to qualify

By refusing to investigate the Al Gore/Al Jazeera deal, it would appear that Capitol Hill “conservatives” like Republican Reps. Michael McCaul, Steve Scalise, and Paul Broun are adopting the view that we have nothing to fear from the global jihad and its instruments of propaganda being positioned on U.S. soil. This view finds support from Scott McConnell, writing in Patrick J. Buchanan’s magazine, The American Conservative, who says there should be no “national loyalty oath” for a new cable channel in America and that the transaction is “welcome news.” Al Jazeera is the voice of the Muslim Brotherhood

‘Give the guy a break.” That was Sen. Harry Reid’s answer to ABC this week when asked about Chuck Hagel’s incoherent performance at his confirmation hearing for defense secretary. Now an Armed Services Committee vote on Hagel has been delayed after 25 Republicans sent a letter asking him to answer questions about whether foreign money paid for any of the work he did or speeches he gave after leaving the Senate. So far, Reid hasn’t joined those asking for more info. But he wasn’t always this reticent. Back when President George W. Bush named Henry Kissinger to chair the 9/11 Commission,

President Obama´s use of drones to kill U.S. citizens fighting alongside terrorists is not easily sorted. It puts two constitutional absolutes into conflict -- the guarantee of due process to every American, and the obligation to provide for the common defense. Sometimes it helps to clarify an issue by viewing it in a different historical context, such as this imagined conversation between President Lincoln and Secretary of War Edwin Stanton the day after the Battle of Cold Harbor in June 1864: Lincoln: Stanton, have you seen these casualty reports? Stanton: Yes, Mr. President, they are horrible. So many dead boys

Sen. Robert Menendez’s chief of staff sent an email to some of his boss’s closest supporters Wednesday that supplies talking points to combat news reports linking the New Jersey Democrat to a potential travel and ethics scandal. The missive offers an inside glimpse into the behind-the-scenes public relations campaign to bolster Menendez’s fortunes. “I’m attaching a memo with talking points I hope you’ll use as you appear before the media or whenever you have opportunities to set the record straight on behalf of Senator Menendez,” read the text of the email, sent Wednesday and obtained by CQ Roll Call.

On Thursday, Senate sources told Breitbart News exclusively that they have been informed that one of the reasons that President Barack Obama’s nominee for Secretary of Defense, Chuck Hagel, has not turned over requested documents on his sources of foreign funding is that one of the names listed is a group purportedly called “Friends of Hamas.” Breitbart called the White House

If you are a Syrian military officer in charge of some nasty chemical weapons, you’ve probably been friended or Skyped by the U.S. government. The message is simple: think twice before using or selling that mustard gas you are guarding. On July 18, when a suicide bomber struck a meeting of Syria’s security cabinet, killing the defense minister and President Bashar al-Assad’s brother-in-law, it was a major victory for Syria’s opposition. But it was also a cause for serious alarm at the Pentagon. In public, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta warned what was left of the regime’s leadership

WASHINGTON – Several years ago I was sitting at a hotel bar in Waco, Texas, with Ron Hutcheson, then the White House correspondent for the old Knight-Ridder News Service, simultaneously watching the Daytona 500 and competing in a video trivia game. Naturally the discussion turned to the job of covering the president of the United States, George W. Bush, who was at that moment busily clearing brush out at his ranch in nearby Crawford, Texas, leaving reporters with little to do but watch race cars circle a track, answer dumb questions and drink beer.

After former Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle was killed Saturday at a Texas shooting range, former congressman Ron Paul tweeted a shockingly cold sentiment. “Chris Kyle’s death seems to confirm that ‘he who lives by the sword dies by the sword,’?” wrote Paul, who as a presidential candidate opposed military action. The message quickly drew a dissenting view from Capitol Hill, where one senator issued a statement calling Kyle “a hero like all Americans who don the uniform to defend our country. Our prayers are with his family during this tragic time.” That senator was Paul’s son, Rand Paul.

According to Politico, “a political colonoscopy is going on before our eyes.” Yuck. Karl Rove has set up a Super PAC to keep controversial conservatives from winning Republican primaries and the Senate leadership has established a “buddy system” to keep Tea Party congressmen in line (“buddy” as in “you should probably vote the way we tell you to, buddy…”). But the most important changes are taking place at Fox where heavyweights Sarah Palin and Dick Morris are out as contributors. A lot of this is post-election house clearing (CNN has moved staff around, too) but it also suggests is blaming

Go digging with dinosaur hunters and they will show you that the last of the Cretaceous beasts died out suddenly, 66 million years ago. For 30 years the prevailing theory has been that T. rex and its brethren were wiped out by a comet or asteroid crashing in Central America, kicking up so much dust and ash that the Earth cooled for years afterward and made survival impossible. Or was it really that simple? Some scientists, digging into well-preserved layers of the earth, said the timing was off. Yes, there is a 110-mile-wide crater, called Chicxulub,

WASHINGTON -- CIA Director-designate John Brennan´s vigorous defense of drone strikes to kill terror suspects - even American citizens - overseas is causing key lawmakers to consider lifting secrecy from what has become an important weapon in the fight against al-Qaida. Brennan, President Barack Obama´s top counterterror adviser, was grilled for more than three hours Thursday before the Senate Intelligence Committee on the drone program he leads, as well as on the CIA´s harsh interrogation techniques during the Bush administration, which he denounced, and on leaks of classified information to the media, which Brennan vehemently denied being a part of.

President Obama, speaking to House Democrats at a party retreat in Lansdowne, Va., on Thursday, told lawmakers that if they stick to their principles, “I expect Nancy Pelosi will be speaker again.” The president said immigration, gun control and the economy are his top priorities for the year, and he offered some oddly-worded praise for Mrs. Pelosi, the House minority leader. Mr. Obama opened his remarks by saying how much he loves Mrs. Pelosi and then immediately pivoted to talking about how she “generates” good-looking grandchildren.

WE NOW know that President Obama’s national security team overwhelmingly supported providing arms to the rebels in Syria. On Thursday, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told a Senate committee that he and Gen. Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, backed a plan that would have vetted, trained and armed selected opposition groups, which have been pleading for such U.S. support for more than a year. According to the New York Times, the strategy was developed by former CIA director David H. Petraeus and supported by former secretary of state Hillary Rodham Clinton.

For the first time since Election Day, President Obama is on the defensive. That’s because on March 1, automatic spending cuts (“sequestration”) go into effect — $1.2?trillion over 10 years, half from domestic (discretionary) programs, half from defense. The idea had been proposed and promoted by the White House during the July 2011 debt-ceiling negotiations. The political calculation was that such draconian defense cuts would drive the GOP to offer concessions. It backfired. The Republicans have offered no concessions. Obama’s bluff is being called and he’s the desperate party. He abhors the domestic cuts.
