Leading gun rights groups put New York State on notice for violating the U.S. and New York State Constitutions for passage and enforcement of the NYS SAFE Act 2013. “On January 29, we served a Notice of Claim on the Attorney General of the State of New York,” said Brian Stapelton, partner at Goldberg Segalla LLP, an Albany law firm. “This is the jurisdictional prerequisite for filing a lawsuit against a municipal body.” The state has 90 days to respond, he said. “Thereafter, we will challenge the unconstitutional SAFE Act as quickly and aggressively as procedures permit.”

Pemex Explosion Should

Socialism: Whether it was an accident or sabotage, the deadly explosion at Mexico´s state-owned oil firm wasn´t an unusual event. The one thing Thursday´s incident at the Pemex tower should be is a spur to privatize. Despite a much-publicized war against cartels, the real Mexico story is one of moderately good economic growth with zero net illegal emigration and a public sector financed by a budget showing a $1 billion annual surplus. But then there´s Pemex, the supposed symbol of national sovereignty, which in reality is nothing but a millstone around Mexico´s neck holding the country back from far greater gains.

The Oregon attorney general’s office is investigating a Portland-area bakery after a lesbian couple filed a complaint alleging that the owner discriminated against them when he declined to make a wedding cake for their same-sex “marriage.” Aaron Klein, who owns and operates Sweet Cakes by Melissa bakery along with his wife in Gresham, Ore., said he received notice of the complaint last week from the Oregon Department of Justice. The complaint stems from an incident which occurred Jan. 17, when a woman came in with her mother to test wedding cakes.

Or, in other words: Just give in already to the power of the all-knowing and all-powerful bureaucracy. Trust us. Last June, the Supreme Court ruled that ObamaCare’s Medicaid mandate (requiring that states expand their programs and provide specified health care to all citizens whose income falls below a certain threshold, or else face losing all prior federal funding) was an unconstitutional “gun to the head” for states’ administrations and budgets, and confirmed their right to opt out without penalty — but that doesn’t mean the Obama administration isn’t applying every

Americans for Tax Reform head Grover Norquist says that large-scale immigration is good for America and the Republican Party — and that critics of easy immigration should get out of the way. “There are a whole bunch of people who are listening to loud voices, some of whom claim to be Republican … talking about [employers] who didn’t fill out the paperwork, about going after [an immigrant´s] aunt,” said Norquist, whose opposition to tax increases has made him popular among Republicans and a hate-figure among progressives.

The Disgusting Consequences

Conservatives often point out that laws, no matter how benign they may appear, have unintended consequences. They can reverberate in ways that not many people foresaw and nobody wanted: Raising the minimum wage can increase unemployment; prohibition can create black markets. The efforts in many cities to discourage the use of plastic bags demonstrate that such unintended consequences can be, among other things, kind of gross. San Francisco has been discouraging plastic bags since 2007, saying that it takes too much oil to make them and that used bags pollute waterways and kill marine animals. In 2012, it strengthened its law.

Morgan continued his push to ban so-called “assault weapons,” appearing at a Texas gun store and firing several rifles before debating the issue with Texas lawmakers. This afternoon, Texas Governor Rick Perry issued a statement to express his opinion on Morgan’s visit. “Governor Perry and all Texas law-abiding gun owners hope that Piers Morgan enjoyed Texas,” Perry said in a statement posted to his Facebook page.

Republicans are anxious to get something done on immigration reform in light of their growing electoral slippage among Latino voters. But even if doing comprehensive reform helps repair the GOP’s image with the Hispanic community and increases its share of the Hispanic vote, one thing has gotten lost in all of this: The GOP would potentially be helping to give millions more Democratic-leaning Latinos the right to vote. A Pew Hispanic Center study last year showed there were 24 million eligible Hispanic voters in the United States and about 16 million Hispanic kids who will be eligible to vote

Per the Wall Street Journal: Senate Democratic leaders expect a gun bill to move to the Senate floor that includes most of the proposals backed by President Barack Obama, with the notable exception of a ban on military-style, semiautomatic weapons, a top aide to Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada said. The bill would likely seek to limit the capacity of ammunition magazines;

Peter Sullivan has introduced legislation to allow the executor of an estate control over the social networking pages of the dead. Last week, the New Hampshire House of Representatives voted 222-128 to give Sullivan more time to write an amendment that begins a study of the issue. GOP Senate Budget Committee staffers explained to TheDC that the estimates assume that the law’s provision capping total spending on exchange subsidies, which is set to begin in 2019, is enforced.

The FBI Hostage Rescue Team blew the doors off the bunker and shot dead the survivalist during the daring raid yesterday afternoon after footage from a secret hi-tech camera showed the boy’s life was in ‘imminent danger’. Obama to call for taxes

President Barack Obama will call Tuesday for new tax cuts and some spending curbs to avoid a series of automatic deep cuts to domestic and defense spending that he approved to resolve a 2011 fiscal crisis. He’s expected to argue at 1:15 a.m. EST that the sequester will further damage the economy, which actually shrank by 0.1 percent during the last three months of 2012. Obama’s new proposal comes one day after he missed the legal deadline for submitting a 2014 budget request, and five weeks after he approved a measure to avoid the so-called “Fiscal Cliff” that raised taxes

It may not be all about us humans - earthworms could be contributing to climate change too, according to a new study. What´s more, the research warns worm populations are set to boom in the next few decades. So should we be worrying about worm-induced warming? Well, probably not in the grand scheme of things - but the humble earthworm does have more to do with greenhouse gas emissions than you might think. Earthworms don´t produce much in the way of emissions themselves. But the soil they live in does - and worms play a big part in soil.

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R) will speak for the first time at this year´s Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), a regular stop for Republican presidential hopefuls. The move is a sign that Bush is seeking a more public role within the GOP, though it´s unclear whether he´s more interested in playing an elder-statesman role or in running for president. While Bush has been invited to speak at previous CPAC events, this is the first time he´s accepted the offer. I’ve known David Horowitz for more than 20 years, from the time he came through town with Peter Collier talking about their invaluable book Destructive Generation: Second Thoughts About the Sixties. As Jay Nordlinger has written, David was a leader of the New Left who became a leader of the fighting Reaganite Right: “He is a thinker and a doer, an intellectual and an activist. His mind ranges widely, and so do his books. He has written about politics and policy, of course. But he has also written about matters literary, cultural, and spiritual.”

French police arrested four suspected Islamist militants near Paris on Tuesday as part of an investigation into the recruitment of volunteers by al Qaeda insurgents in Mali, Interior Minister Manuel Valls said. France´s intervention in Mali to rid its former colony of Islamist fighters has prompted the authorities to increase security against possible reprisal attacks on its interests in mainland France and abroad. Anti-terrorism judge Marc Trevidic, who is in charge of the operation, told Reuters last month that France needed more robust local policing, better intelligence sharing and the ability to infiltrate small radical Islamist groups
