Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano warned internet users at the Wilson Center this morning that cyberspace was becoming more dangerous as more and more Americans go online. “Every individual on the net is vulner – is a potential, uh, opening,” Napolitano stated, adding that the internet was a “great thing.” “We just want to make sure that everyone remains safe and free,” she continued. “So that requires everyone to take some responsibility, have good cyber-habits, make sure we use the phrase ‘Stop, think, connect.’”

Our local library here in Lower Macungie Township (Pa.) is among the many nationwide that will get 25 books about Islam thanks to an $800 million grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. And not a moment too soon. Without the government-approved books on Islam, Macungie might remain woefully bereft of crucial cultural knowledge, like hundreds of other clodhopper communities across this provincial land. The grant appears to be funded mainly by the Carnegie Foundation, rather than taxpayer dollars, but why didn’t N.E.H. just fund it and let the libraries choose which books?

During a panel discussion on Wednesday´s NBC Today, attorney Star Jones and the network´s chief medical editor Nancy Snyderman hyperventilated over Britain´s Prince Harry revealing in interviews that he killed Taliban fighters during combat in Afghanistan. Jones fretted: "Why do you need to antagonize the Taliban?" [Listen to the audio or watch the video after the jump] Snyderman chimed in: "I thought he jumped the shark when he was shown playing video games and then it was, ´Oh my God, we killed people.´" Co-host Matt Lauer sparked the exchange by wondering:

A number of former soldiers have spoken out against the move because of the tough logistical life of fighters on the front line, even though many outsiders see Defense Secretary Leon Panetta´s decision to lift the ban on women serving in combat positions as a progressive move. Some have spoken out about how the move ignores some of the realities of war, like disgusting unhygienic conditions and the way that soldiers are sometimes forced to change in front of one another, in favor of gender equality. One wrote a letter in the Wall Street Journal describing the conditions

Washington- The chair, perhaps the most famous chair in political history, stands in the office of a large, nondescript cement building just a stone´s throw away from the U.S. Capitol. That´s right, the chair Clint Eastwood used as a prop in his rambling and at times incoherent critique of President Barack Obama at the Republican National Convention is now one of the many pieces of political memorabilia in Reince Priebus´ spacious office on First Street in Washington. The chairman of the Republican National Committee gets the joke; the chair is the first thing he points out to a reporter

Republican Senators and Congressmen thought they finally had a chance to cross-examine Secretary Clinton Wednesday on the Obama administration’s failure to provide adequate security for our Benghazi consulate. They thought they could grill her about what happened both before the attacks that killed our ambassador and three others and the failure to mount rescue operations once the attacks began. Instead, the Secretary turned the tables and chastised Congress for failing to provide adequate funding to protect our people.

French investigators were due Thursday to question Dominique Strauss-Kahn as part of their probe into allegations that the disgraced former IMF chief procured prostitutes for sex parties. The summons, confirmed by legal sources, for interrogation in Lille came after a court the northern city in December rejected a request that the pimping charges against him be dismissed. Strauss-Kahn last month agreed a financial settlement with a New York hotel maid who had accused him of sexual assault in a 2011 case that forced him to resign from his IMF job and wrecked his chances of becoming French president.

NORFOLK A drearily familiar dialectic is on display here: Government is behaving badly in order to silence protests of other bad behavior. It is violating the Constitution’s First Amendment, stifling speech about its violation of the Fifth Amendment, as it was properly construed until 2005. Founded in 1934, Central Radio maintains communication, sonar and camera equipment on vessels at Norfolk Naval Station. The business is in a building designed for its needs near the waterfront.

In hindsight, there were early hints that Boston´s citywide challenge to collectively lose one million pounds in a year faced slim odds. In June, a mere two months after the challenge began, the city kicked off "Fitness on the Plaza," a series of free exercise classes for the citizenry to work off its blubber. But the same week in the same place—City Hall Plaza—Boston tempted the sweet tooth by hosting the annual "Scooper Bowl," billed as the nation´s largest all-you-can-eat ice-cream festival, offering delicacies from Rockin´ Poppin´ Cotton Candy to Hunka Chunka PB Fudge. FONTANA, Calif, - The semiautomatic rifles look like they belong in a war zone instead of a suburban public school, but officials in this Los Angeles-area city say the high-powered weapons now in the hands of school police could prevent a massacre. Fontana Unified School District police purchased 14 of the Colt LE6940 rifles last fall, and they were delivered the first week of December — a week before the Connecticut school shooting. Over the holiday break, the district´s 14 school police officers received 40 hours of training on the rifles.

In one of his last acts as Secretary of Defense, Leon Panetta today will revoke the last of the policies that prevent women from serving in combat arms. Make no mistake about it: this action isn’t about civil rights, equal opportunity, or any of the laudable things America has done in the past fifty years to remove false barriers within the military. This is different. It’s a purely political act that will make our military — and the military families liberals claim to venerate — much weaker than they are today. Panetta is acting in response to feminists’ demands

It´s not always easy being rich, as Phil Mickelson reminded us the other day. There are taxes to pay—apparently lots of them—and the price of a tank of jet fuel seems to go up every day. A million dollars a week just doesn´t go as far as it used to, now that the wealthy are paying more in taxes. For Mickelson, things have gotten so bad that he´s thinking of moving from California so the state doesn´t get a cut of the $47 million that Golf Digest estimates he made last year. Thankfully, it´s not quite to the point
