Tim Murray may not have been the most electric candidate in the world, but his surprise exit has jolted the 2014 governor’s race, and possibly this year’s special Senate election. Without Murray in the race, that makes Treasurer Steve Grossman and Attorney General Martha Coakley the perceived front-runners in 2014, and that could be a real problem for Democrats. Who could now jump into the fray without a strong Democratic nominee running against Charlie Baker or former U.S. Sen. Scott Brown? Here’s one scenario: Joe Kennedy, the father. Sources say the former congressman may
LONDON — Defying global calls for restraint, the Algerian military staged a final assault Saturday against Islamist militants at an energy complex in the Sahara, culminating a four-day siege that left some two dozen hostages dead and spawned fears of a resurgent al-Qaeda in North Africa. Eleven kidnappers and seven hostages died in Saturday’s operation targeting the remaining militant stronghold at the vast facility run by London-based BP, Norway’s Statoil and Algeria’s state energy giant, according to Algeria’s state news service and France’s Agence France-Presse.
Maybe it was the dual bubble windshields, perfectly framing the heads of Adam West and Burt Ward as they raced to the Gotham City crime scene. Or maybe it was the flared bat wings, edged in orange. Or perhaps it was the ultimate jet exhaust, which flamed like a dragon as the caped crusaders raced out of the Bat Cave. Whatever the reasons, the original Batmobile remains one of the most revered cars in America. And now the Batmobile – yes the very same one used on the 1960s Adam West TV show – is among the more than 1,400 cars expected to be auctioned off at the the 42nd annual
The Obama administration is nearing completion of a detailed counterterrorism manual that is designed to establish clear rules for targeted-killing operations but leaves open a major exemption for the CIA’s campaign of drone strikes in Pakistan, U.S. officials said. The carve-out would allow the CIA to continue pounding al-Qaeda and Taliban targets for a year or more before the agency is forced to comply with more stringent rules spelled out in a classified document that officials have described as a counterterrorism
How much will all the inaugural events cost? It´s hard to say. While most events that occur in the capital have a hard-and-fast budget, the inauguration´s many moving parts, safety concerns and large geographic reach make it hard to quantify – especially before the main event. In 2009, ABC reported the total cost of Obama´s first inauguration was $170 million. While incumbent presidents historically spend less on a second inauguration, it´s unclear what the total bill will be this time around. Analysis of some of the known appropriations so far puts the total at $13.637 million, but
Vice President Biden was curt, avoiding confrontation when he sat down with the National Rifle Association and other gun rights advocates. He looked across the table in his ornate conference room and asked the NRA official if his group could back a ban on assault weapons. “No,” was James J. Baker’s reply. There was little discussion, no real debate over whether a 1990s ban had worked. The two men simply moved on. Biden, leading a task force to study gun violence, was certain of the course of action President Obama would end up taking, and Baker was just as certain
Washington - President Barack Obama said Saturday the U.S. stands ready to provide whatever assistance Algerian officials need in the aftermath of the deadly terrorist attack at a natural gas complex in the Sahara. The four-day standoff appeared to end Saturday after Algerian special forces stormed the complex. The clash left at least 23 hostages dead and killed all 32 militants involved, the Algerian government said. In a statement from the White House, Obama said the blame lay with the militants and that the United States condemns their actions. "This attack is another reminder of the threat posed by
AUSTIN, Texas — Hundreds of gun owners and Second Amendment advocates rallied in state capitals nationwide Saturday, days after President Barack Obama unveiled a sweeping package of federal gun-control proposals. Some 600 attendees in Austin, Texas, carried signs bearing messages such as "An Armed Society is a Polite Society" and "The Second Amendment Comes from God." About 2,000 people — many carrying American flags and "Don´t Tread On Me" banners — turned out for the chilly outdoor rally at the New York state capitol in Albany. The "Guns Across America" rallies,
ST. LOUIS Stan Musial, one of baseball´s greatest hitters and a Hall of Famer with the St. Louis Cardinals for more than two decades, died Saturday. He was 92. Stan the Man won seven National League batting titles, was a three-time MVP and helped the Cardinals capture three World Series championships in the 1940s. The Cardinals announced Musial´s death in a news release. They said he died Saturday evening at his home in Ladue surrounded by family. The team said Musial´s son-in-law, Dave Edmonds, informed the club of Musial´s death.
In a worldwide sweep to rid its workplaces of sexually charged materials, the Air Force found 32,216 inappropriate or offensive items, including 40 pornographic magazines at the Air Education and Training Command headquarters at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph. In all, the Air Force found 631 pornographic items at more than 100 installations, including magazines, calendars, pictures, videos that intentionally displayed nudity or depicted acts of sexual activity. More than half of those items were discovered at AETC installations. Eleven Air Force bases are in the training command,
A few days ago, I checked with a half-dozen Washington-area hotels, ranging from the luxe Willard Intercontinental to the not-so-luxe Hampton Inn, and found that all had rooms available for this weekend’s Obama inauguration festivities. That was a huge change from Obama’s first inauguration, in January 2009, when nearly all the area’s hotel rooms were sold out. On Saturday, as Obama supporters arrived for the Monday ceremony, I checked with those hotels again. I asked if they had a room available for arrival on Saturday, staying three nights and departing on Tuesday, January 22.
Apparently, there´s a presidential inauguration scheduled for this holiday weekend. The real one occurs Sunday out of general public view. The parties will then re-enact the ceremony for those watching TV around Monday noon on the King holiday. Less interest in this one, which is not surprising for second terms that often do not turn out so well for incumbents. One interesting historical footnote: This term of the 44th president marks only the second time in U.S. history that Americans have reelected three presidents in a row. Previously, only No. 3, 4 and 5 held that distinction:
Over the next 24 hours Barack Obama will place his hand on three Bibles to swear two oaths before God to faithfully execute the Office of President of these ostensibly secular United States, becoming only the second president to take the oath four times. On Sunday in Washington, Mr Obama will swear the oath on Michelle Obama´s family Bible in a private White House ceremony to abide by the constitutional decree that the oath must be taken on January 20. (Snip) According to the George Washington University political science professor Michael Cornfield, the lead-up to this year´s inauguration
Breaking his silence for the first time, Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te´o finally answered whether or not he was part of the Lennay Kekua online girlfriend hoax. ´No. Never,´ Te´o said in an interview Friday night with ESPN´s Jeremy Schaap. ´I wasn´t faking it,´ he said. ´I wasn´t part of this.´ Scroll down for video- Te´o also said that he did not make up anything to help his Heisman Trophy chances. ´When (people) hear the facts, they´ll know,´ he said. ´They´ll know that there is no way that I could be part of this.´
Five Britons are feared dead after the Algerian hostage crisis ended in a murderous bloodbath yesterday. The four-day siege reached its climax after seven workers were executed in a final, monstrous act of violence by their Al Qaeda-linked captors just as special forces soldiers stormed the desert gas facility to try to rescue them. Their nationalities are not yet known. All of the 11 remaining militants – who had booby-trapped the complex with explosives – were later shot dead in a fierce gun battle. Scroll down for video
A 5-year-old Pennsylvania girl who told another girl she was going to shoot her with a pink Hello Kitty toy gun that blows soapy bubbles has been suspended from kindergarten. Her family has hired an attorney to fight the punishment, which initially was 10 days for issuing a ´terroristic threat.´ But her punishment was reduced to two days after her mother met with school officials and had the incident dropped to ´threatening to harm another student,´ which apparently carries a lesser punishment. "It´s laughable," Robin Ficker, the girl´s attorney told FoxNews.com.
As NewsBusters has been reporting for years, there is no objective press anymore - only sycophants gushing and fawning over the political leaders they agree with and admire. More evidence of this came Friday from the Washington Examiner´s Charlie Spiering who shared with readers some startling observations in Buzzfeed reporter Michael Hastings´ new book including journalists swooning over Barack Obama at an off-the-record event held at a bar in Orlando, Florida, last year: “The behavior of the assembled press corps was telling. Everyone, myself included, swooned. Swooned!
For the first time in a long time--perhaps ever--Americans are pointing the finger of blame at absentee parents and Hollywood productions instead of law-abiding gun owners. As a new poll conducted by NBC/Wall Street Journal reveals, 83 percent of Americans say that parents who "don´t pay enough attention to what´s going on in their kids lives" share "a great deal" of responsibility for shootings like those at the Aurora theater, Sandy Hook Elementary, and Tuscon, AZ. Moreover, the same poll shows that 62 percent of Americans believe that moviesappealing way share a large portion of the
It was a gun sellers market in downtown Dallas Saturday. The previously mentioned gun buyback hosted by First Presbyterian Church of Dallas and The Stewpot found itself with some competition from an eager group of gun buyers that set up across the street. Signs saying “We pay more!” and “Give your gun a happy home” were waved along the street, trying to sway individuals planning to take guns to the Presbyterian event to cross the street and sell the gun to another private owner for more money and prevent its destruction. First Presbyterian has been holding gun buybacks for years
US President Barack Obama and Benjamin Netanyahu will have to bury past hostilities if the Israeli prime minister is re-elected to jointly face looming threats such as Iran, analysts say. The two men have never warmed to each other, and ties have remained frosty. Obama pointedly failed to make time to meet the Israeli leader on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in September. Netanyahu also made little secret of the fact that he was rooting for Obama´s Republican rival, Mitt Romney, in November´s US presidential election. Yet another spat made public headlines this week when Netanyahu
John Nolte picked up on a column written by John Dickerson, in the amateur e-zine known as Slate. Dickerson calls on President Obama to use his Second Inaugural address to do what he has already been doing since his re-election, namely, to declare war on the GOP. Dickerson uses such eliminationist rhetoric as “go for the throat” to get Obama’s blood up and get going on “transforming” the country. Obama has spent just about every minute since his re-election trying to destroy the GOP. John Dickerson is a lickspittle hanger-on fanboy. Dickerson’s column wouldn’t be all that remarkable for Slate.
Reading the Left´s fevered desires over at Slate isn´t anything new. Not even articles breathlessly titled and subtitled: Go for the Throat! Why if he wants to transform American politics, Obama must declare war on the Republican Party. Not even articles that read: The president who came into office speaking in lofty terms about bipartisanship and cooperation can only cement his legacy if he destroys the GOP. If he wants to transform American politics, he must go for the throat. … Obama’s only remaining option is to pulverize. Whether he succeeds in passing legislation or not,
France’s military involvement in Mali “significantly increases” the threat facing French Jews, the country´s Jewish communal security service said. “The situation requires we raise the level of protection around our community and double the level of vigilance around synagogues, Jewish schools, community centers and gathering places,” said a communiqué by SPCJ, which often determines its level of preparedness based on consultations with French authorities. French ground forces deployed to the capital Bamako last week and began advancing northward on Jan. 15 to engage Islamist rebels.
Former Washington D.C. mayor Marion Barry is no stranger to controversy so it´s somehow unsurprising that he now claims the FBI attempted to murder him when he was arrested for crack cocaine possession in 1990. Barry was videotaped smoking crack cocaine in a hotel room with ex-girlfriend Rasheeda Moore during his third term. It was later revealed that Moore was given the drug from undercover officers and was cooperating with an FBI investigation. ´The FBI had a mind to entrap me, also the FBI tried to kill me by having some substance that wasn´t proven to be crack,´
