Britain is braced for the “worst snowstorm in years” to strike tonight bringing up to a foot of snow across the country. The Met Office has issued a nationwide severe weather warning with an almost unheard of red alert for Wales. The entire country faces heavy snowfall and blizzards with up to a foot expected on high ground and several inches elsewhere. The Met Office warned of severe disruption and “severe drifting” of lying snow with bitter gales adding to the mayhem. The worst affected areas are likely to be Wales, Central England, the Midlands, and the South-west although Headline resplit by staff.

ALBANY, N.Y. — The National Rifle Association says the secret negotiations and lightning-fast passage of New York’s tough new gun control laws squelched the powerful gun lobby’s ability to mount opposition. Gov. Andrew Cuomo says he had to engineer quick enactment to prevent a counterproductive buying spree of now-outlawed guns. The legislation was introduced and signed into law in less than two days.

The world is moving step by step towards a de facto Gold Standard, without any meetings of G20 leaders to announce the idea or bless the project. Some readers will already have seen the GFMS Gold Survey for 2012 which reported that central banks around the world bought more bullion last year in terms of tonnage than at any time in almost half a century. They added a net 536 tonnes in 2012 as they diversified fresh reserves away from the four fiat suspects: dollar, euro, sterling, and yen. Zero Dark Thirty is already the most talked about film of the year. The Sony Pictures release about the 10-year hunt for Osama bin Laden has been nominated for five Academy Awards, and raked in an impressive $24 million in its first weekend on wide release, a huge figure for January, normally a quiet period at the US box office.[Snip]Zero Dark Thirty has also become the most controversial film of the year, with some members of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (including Martin Sheen) calling for a boycott of the film for its depiction of the

Whole Foods CEO John Mackey backs off the F-word in part because, while fairly accurate and defensible, it hurts the feelings of people who have no problem using it inaccurately and indefensibly all of the time: JOHN MACKEY: I made a bad choice of language. I was trying to distinguish it between socialism so I took the dictionary definition of fascism, which is when the means of production are still owned privately but the government controls it — that’s a type of fascism. However, I realize that that word has so much baggage associated with it

Half of GPs believe the NHS provision for immigrants is too generous, a survey has suggested, as many now break the rules by refusing treatment to those who cannot prove residency. While NHS hospitals are allowed to charge foreign patients for treatment if they do not come from a country with a reciprocal arrangement, GPs are forced to take on people without charging. A survey of GPs has found that the majority think this is too generous and the rules should be changed. Some family doctors are asking some patients for proof of residency before allowing them to register

An amateur prospector hunting for gold in Australia has astonished experts after stumbling across a mammoth nugget worth some £200,000. The Y-shaped nugget, weighing 5.5kg (177 ounces), was buried 60cm beneath the ground near the town of Ballarat in Victoria. Local experts said they could not recall any nugget even approaching that size being discovered in the area previously. The prospector, who has not been named, was using a top-of-the-line handheld metal detector when he found the nugget. Video footage of the find was posted online by user TroyAurum, who wrote that the prospector described the sound given off by the detector as being "like the bonnet of a car through the headphones". He also told reporters he would be violating the law if he enforced a law that was unconstutional. “An officer is obligated not to follow any unlawful order,” Cannon said. During the press conference, Cannon dumped bullets out of a revolver and said: “The only way I can hurt you with this is if I hit you with it.”

The horrific Newtown, Conn., mass shooting has unleashed a frenzy to pass new gun-control legislation. But the war over restricting firearms is not just between liberals and conservatives, it also pits the first two amendments to the U.S. Constitution against each other. Apparently, in the sequential thinking of James Madison and the Founding Fathers, the right to free expression and the guarantee to own arms were the two most important personal liberties. But now these two cherished rights seem to be at odds with each other and have caused bitter exchanges between interpreters of the Constitution.

As most everyone knows by now, bedbugs are back. The exact cause is not known, but experts associate the resurgence with increased resistance of bed bugs to available pesticides, greater international and domestic travel, lack of knowledge regarding control of bed bugs due to their prolonged absence, and the continuing decline or elimination of effective pest control programs at state and local public health agencies. The only people that are happy, it would seem, are pest control specialists. To that end, Orkin has announced its top 50 bed bug cities for 2012.

Abuja—The Senate, Thursday, gave constitutional consent to the deployment of Nigerian military troops to Mali by President Goodluck Jonathan. The action of the upper legislative chamber was in response to a letter it received from the president, asking it to give consent to the 1,200 Nigerian troops he deployed last Wednesday, to Mali for a peace keeping operation. But the Senate failed short of directing the president to borrow a leaf from western powers especially the United States of America, USA, by considering Nigeria’s economic interest in foreign policies, following a sharp division among senators on the issue.

Less than a day into the Manti Te’o revelations, we’ve heard more about a fake dead girlfriend of a Notre Dame football player than a real dead girl. Lizzy Seeberg committed suicide, not long after being intimidated by Notre Dame football players for reporting a sexual assault by one of their teammates. A second woman who was taken to the hospital for a rape exam declined to formally accuse another Notre Dame football player after getting a series of bullying texts from players. Foreclosure activity fell 3 percent on a national level last year from 2011 but higher foreclosures in half of the states, including Illinois, showed the uneven pace of the housing recovery. Homeowners, including those in the Chicago area, did get some good news in a second report issued Thursday that showed fewer homeowners were underwater on their mortgages. Nationwide, foreclosure notices were filed against 1.84 million properties last year, a sizable decline from 2010, the peak year, when foreclosures affected 2.9 million properties, according to a year-end RealtyTrac report issued Thursday.

After betting the foreign-policy store on the Muslim Brotherhood as the new wave of Arab democracy in the Middle East, the Eastern Establishment and the Obama administration seem ready to cut their losses. Syria already is a failed state — no alternative government can replace the odious Basher al-Assad, and Assad cannot reunify the country — and Egypt is a failed state in waiting. The latter observation should have been obvious to anyone with a pocket calculator. It’s no news that Mohamed Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood is an extremist, anti-Semitic monstrosity. If they gave Tour de France trophies to people who were drug-free, they would have to find their winners in grade school.” “He lied,” the anti-Lance man replied, somewhat timidly. “Why didn’t he just tell the truth?” “Grow up, you moron,” the third shouted,

The fate of hostages being held at a gas complex deep in the Sahara desert drew conflicting reports Thursday, with an Algerian news service reporting that 600 hostages were freed while militants claimed 35 were killed in an Algerian military raid. Algerian news service ANP reported that the Algerian military conducted air strikes and a ground operation to free the hostages, who were picked up by military helicopters. It remained unclear if any of the hostages were injured, ANP said. However, Islamist terrorists told a Mauritanian news outlet that Algerian military helicopters strafed the gas complex, killing 35 foreign hostages

At this point, it’s entirely possible that no one wants Solyndra’s solar modules except political junkies and clean-tech geeks. But an electronics dealership in Santa Clara will happily sell you one for $9.50. HSC Electronic Supply scooped up a few hundred of the unique, tube-shaped modules that were left at Solyndra’s Fremont HQ after the company plunged into bankruptcy in 2011. HSC announced their availability Wednesday. Solyndra’s collapse, after the company received $528 million in federal loans to build its factory, touched off a political firestorm and turned into a public relations disaster that the solar industry is still struggling
