Our nation faces a fundamental question in the aftermath of the tragedy in Newtown, Conn. If gun violence is a problem -- and U.S. citizens overwhelmingly think that it is -- will our leaders act quickly and wisely to reduce gun deaths? (Snip) Those who say it´s only about gun limitations should know that Virginia´s experience has shown the importance of enhanced criminal penalties, greater access to mental-health services and campus security protocols.

Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) gave an interview to the Christian Broadcasting Network in which he rather strongly denounced President Obama’s threats to impose gun control through executive orders. ”I’m against having a king,” said the Senator. ”I think having a monarch is what we fought the American Revolution over, and someone who wants to bypass the Constitution, bypass Congress, that’s someone who wants to act like a king or monarch.” To be more specific, the notion of suffering rule without representation was a big sticking point with the authors of the Declaration of Independence.

As hundreds of French troops are deployed to Mali to do battle with al-Qaeda-backed terrorists and another chapter in the long-running war against militant Islam develops, it is hard not to feel a sense of déjà vu. It is now more than a decade since the UN Security Council unanimously approved the American-led campaign to destroy the terrorist infrastructure al-Qaeda had assembled in southern Afghanistan. There is nothing the world’s most notorious terrorist organisation likes more than to move into the ungoverned space of failed Islamic states, and southern Afghanistan proved the perfect hide-out from which Osama bin Laden and

Shortly after the United Nations General Assembly voted in late November to upgrade the status of the Palestinians, the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that it would advance plans to establish a settlement in an area of the West Bank known as E-1, and that it would build 3,000 additional housing units in east Jerusalem and the West Bank. A large settlement in E-1, an empty zone between Jerusalem and the Jewish settlement city of Maaleh Adumim, would make the goal of politically moderate Palestinians--the creation of a geographically contiguous state--much harder to achieve.

Bill Fulton was your man. "We do bad things to bad people," his company jackets said. Barack Obama is laying out a revolutionary agenda for his second term, and he’s calling up his heaviest artillery to enforce the transformative presidency delayed in the first. The campaign to confirm Chuck Hagel will be no campaign for the fainthearted summer soldiers who know only small-caliber combat. The emerging White House strategy is to repeat and repeat the canard that anyone who criticizes the president and his agenda is a racist, probably a Klansman and maybe even a conservative. If the canard is repeated often enough, some people will believe it, even if they’re mostly people who believe it already.

Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., denies taking a bribe from a Utah businessman who claims the Senate Majority Leader was to use his influence to deflect federal regulators from investigating the Utahn’s business. Jeremy Johnson claims that he agreed to pay Reid $600,000 in 2010 to make a federal investigation go away. “The truth is the worst thing I think I’ve done was I paid money knowing it was going to influence Harry Reid,” Johnson told the Salt Lake Tribune. “So I’ve felt all along that I’ve committed bribery of some sort there.” Reid denies the accusation.

For the first time since Social Security´s cash crisis in 1983, the program can´t afford to pay full benefits for its youngest crop of new retirees through life expectancy, government data show. The hastening of the Social Security Trust Fund´s demise to 2033 means that workers just becoming eligible for Social Security at age 62 face steep future benefit cuts if they live to the average life expectancy, now about 84.

Washington - Could former Rep. Anthony Weiner be preparing for a political comeback? The Democrat´s latest filing with the New York City Campaign Finance Board, published Tuesday, may send some subtle messages. His mayoral campaign committee, created ahead of his unsuccessful bid for the Democratic nomination in 2005, reported spending just one dollar shy of $37,000 in the last six months. It brought in $27,400 in the same period, largely through a transfer from a previous political committee. Should he decide to run, Weiner now has nearly $4.5 million cash on hand - a start for a

DETROIT — Chrysler made the new Dodge Dart a little too European for American tastes. And the company´s CEO says that fact is holding back sales of Chrysler´s first innovative small car in years. The Dart, unveiled with much fanfare at last year´s Detroit auto show, is off to a slow start after going on sale in May. Only 25,000 were sold last year, which CEO Sergio Marchionne concedes is below his expectations. Chrysler, owned by Italy´s Fiat, had touted the sleek compact as the perfect blend of aggressive American styling and Italian technology. It was supposed Link repaired by staff.

Praise government! Just hours after the federal bureaucracy went over the “fiscal cliff” on New Year´s Day, President Obama voiced approval for an emergency Congressional bill to save us all. Yes, ailing American families and businesses will pay more in taxes. But that´s what it takes for big government to avoid real budget cuts, for now. As soon as the beltway bandits raise the federal debt ceiling above $16.4 trillion in February, runaway deficit spending can continue unabated. Hallelujah! All sarcasm aside, American taxpayers are holding the short end of the stick again. The media wants us to believe Source corrected by staff.

WASHINGTON — Federal immigration agents were prepared to arrest an illegal immigrant and registered sex offender days before the November elections but were ordered by Washington to hold off after officials warned of "significant interest" from Congress and news organizations because the suspect was a volunteer intern for Sen. Robert Menendez, according to internal agency documents provided to Congress. The Homeland Security Department said last month, when The Associated Press first disclosed the delayed arrest of Luis Abrahan Sanchez Zavaleta, that AP´s report was "categorically false".
