Time Warner´s Time Inc. will lay off up to 700 staffers out of just under 8,000 total as the publisher´s new chief struggles to transform famous titles and massive market share into a digital profit center. The staff cuts will come sometime in the first quarter, said a person familiar with the company´s plans, and will be across the board -- not just focused on editorial, where staffing has already been hard hit. A Time Warner spokesman declined comment.

The man who joined forces with Ralph Nader in the 1970s to virtually invent the consumer-interest lawsuit said Thursday that an outright ban on "assault weapons" might make some people feel better, but it would do nothing to curb violence at schools. George Washington University Law Professor Alan Morrison says gun confiscation is the way to go. “Now obviously, we all want to stop the killing in the schools. But how are we going to do that? Gun registration, if that happened – (is that) enough? After all, the killer’s mother had a registered gun.

WESTCHESTER, LOS ANGELES -- Fourteen people were released after being held hostage inside a Nordstrom Rack store in Westchester all night during an armed robbery. The search is still on for at least two suspects. The situation started shortly after the store closed at 10 p.m. Thursday when a husband or boyfriend of an employee called police to say there was an armed robbery. When officers arrived at the Promenade at Howard Hughes Center, they saw a man who was acting strangely run into the Nordstrom Rack.

A growing number of states are aiming to keep Uncle Sam´s hands off their weapons if Congress decides to stiffen gun-control laws in response to last month´s deadly shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. Eight states — Alaska, Arizona, Idaho, Montana, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah and Wyoming — have adopted laws in recent years that would exempt guns made in the state from federal regulation as long as they remain in the state, according to Jon Griffin of the National Conference of State Legislatures. Twenty-one other states have introduced similar legislation, said Gary Marbut, president

Many Americans, since the Sandy Hook massacre, have been disgusted by Piers Morgan´s snooty condescension toward their great country, and his blatant disregard for the Second Amendment.(snip)I can say with confidence that Piers is being either intellectually dishonest, or downright ignorant, if he believes that the USA should imitate the diabolical disaster that has been British gun control. The first thing to be observed is that his very usage of Britain as an example for the U.S. to follow is proof that his claim only to want to ban certain assault weapons like the AR-15 is an outrageous lie

A few days after Second Amendment supporters designated Jan. 19 as "Gun Appreciation Day," people on the other side of the issue are responding with some rallies of their own. One Million Moms for Gun Control announced Friday it will sponsor "several major events" in January to demand "common-sense gun control laws." The group said it will hold a demonstration at City Hall in New York on Monday, Jan. 21 -- which is Inauguration Day and the federal holiday marking Dr. Martin Luther King´s birthday. The goal of the Million Moms´ rally is to "reinforce a message

The U.S. trade deficit expanded in November to its widest point in seven months, driven by a surge in imports that outpaced only modest growth in exports. The Commerce Department said Friday that the trade gap widened 15.8 percent to $48.7 billion in November from October. Imports grew 3.8 percent to $231.3 billion, led by gains in shipments of cell phones, including Apple´s new iPhone. Exports increased only 1 percent to $182.6 billion. And exports to Europe fell 1.3 percent, further evidence of the prolonged debt crisis that has gripped the region.

In a bruising open letter to President Obama, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is urging the administration to give up its bungled, politically-driven green energy program to focus exclusively on new taxes and industries aimed at fixing global warming. "You have the power and the opportunity to lay the groundwork for a new clean-energy policy that will help us avoid the worst consequences of climate change," said the letter, published in the MIT Technology Review. "It is quite possible that if this is not done over the next four years, it will be too late."

When Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton leaves her post as the nation’s top diplomat this year, she will step into a new role: presidential front-runner. Clinton is the leading contender to win the presidency in 2016 should she decide to run, but New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is the one Republican with a shot at defeating her, according to a new poll. Clinton leads Christie 44-42 percent, the Public Policy Polling survey found. Clinton, 65, who was recently hospitalized with a blood clot near her brain, trounces all other GOP contenders. In early hypothetical match-ups, she leads Wisconsin

The conversion to electronic health records has failed so far to produce the hoped-for savings in health care costs and has had mixed results, at best, in improving efficiency and patient care, according to a new analysis by the influential RAND Corporation. Optimistic predictions by RAND in 2005 helped drive explosive growth in the electronic records industry and encouraged the federal government to give billions of dollars in financial incentives to hospitals and doctors that put the systems in place. “We’ve not achieved the productivity and quality benefits that are unquestionably there for the taking,” said

It seemed like classic Daily Show material: Former Vice President Al Gore, recipient of the Nobel Prize and the Academy Award for his work warning of the dangers of global warming, selling his struggling network Current TV to Al Jazeera, of the oil sheikhdom of Qatar, for 500 million petro-dollars. How could Jon Stewart not have some fun with that? But a week went by, and the Comedy Central mainstay said nothing about the deal. Until Thursday night. In a segment headlined “Qur’rent TV,” Stewart took on the Gore news.

If Congress does not agree to raise the debt ceiling, the US government will face tough decisions over which financial obligations it will meet, and which it won´t. The choices will be invidious and legally questionable. New Year´s Eve was the perfect time for a company to bury bad news. In the end, it was a country that seized the opportunity. As the world celebrated the start of 2013, the US government revealed that it had reached its $16.4 trillion (£10 trillion) borrowing limit. Disclosing the news with just hours of 2012 left was not the only devilry in

The Obama administration is considering funding many more police officers in public schools to secure campuses, a leading Democratic senator said, part of a broad gun violence agenda that is likely to include a ban on high-capacity ammunition clips and universal background checks. The school safety initiative, one of several under consideration, would make federal dollars available to schools that want to hire police officers and install surveillance equipment, although it is not nearly as far-ranging as the National Rifle Association’s proposal for armed guards in every U.S. school.

War On Terror: In picking his terror czar for CIA chief, the president claimed John Brennan has "decimated" al-Qaida. In fact, Brennan´s terror-fighting record should disqualify him from the job. (Snip)It´s been months since al-Qaida pulled off its worst act of terrorism on U.S. soil since 9/11, and yet the White House counterterrorism chief remains mum. He hasn´t said a word about it, in sharp contrast to his camera-mugging after the SEALs took out Osama bin Laden. Why? Because he dropped the ball in Libya. He underestimated al-Qaida´s strength in North Africa.

America, meet Jack Lew, your next Treasury secretary. (Snip) We find it troubling that Lew has repeatedly told outright falsehoods about U.S. budgets and debt — deceiving both the public and Republican opposition about our fiscal health. For years Larry King hosted the CNN show that is now helmed by British import Piers Morgan. Now King has opened up about his replacement and his pronouncement is not very flattering. King thinks Morgan makes the show too much about Morgan. For those who remember, Larry King was more about being a conduit for the guests to entertain and enlighten viewers. His idea, perhaps an old fashioned TV ideal, was to make the show less about Larry King and more about the guests his viewers tuned in to watch.

The Government was on Thursday night urged to open an inquiry after officials found signs that birth rates for girls and boys vary noticeably according to where their mothers were born. A health minister said that these differences in rates of male and female births among mothers of certain nationalities may “fall outside the range considered possible without intervention”. It forms the first official statistical evidence potentially backing up concerns that sex-selection abortions are being carried out in Britain. Andrew Lansley, the former health secretary, last year criticised the “illegal and morally wrong” practice

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A Kremlin official said on Thursday a bilateral agreement with Washington on adoptions was still in place, creating uncertainty over the immediate impact of Russia´s new ban on Americans adopting Russian children. Russian President Vladimir Putin approved the ban from January 1 as part of a law passed to retaliate against U.S. legislation intended to punish Russian human rights abusers. Moscow had told Washington it was also terminating a bilateral agreement regulating adoptions - but Putin´s spokesman on Thursday said a technicality meant that agreement would have to remain in force until the beginning of 2014.

Vice President Joe Biden announced Thursday that he will recommend new gun control measures to President Barack Obama, which include more comprehensive background checks on gun buyers and limits on the sizes of ammunition magazines. The proposal could lead to the most significant move on guns in 20 years, but one regulation highly coveted by gun control advocates is notably missing: a ban on assault weapons.
