Celebrities and big Western companies are flocking to join Sina Weibo, the Chinese ´Twitter´. What do you get for the pampered western celebrity who thinks they have everything? A weibo, of course. A what? A weibo, stupid! Pronounced way-bore, weibo is Chinese for “microblog”, and is often referred to as the Twitter of the East. In China, the most popular of the many weibos available to the country’s 500 million internet users is Sina Weibo, a social networking phenomenon that had 368 million registered users at the last count, between them posting an impressive 100 million messages a day.

No one forced me, but I finally decided it was time to discover what all the business was about Honey Boo Boo. Even though I’ve made reference to the show featuring a former beauty tot, now 7, and her family, I’d never actually watched a full episode. I still haven’t, but I watched enough to need a jaw adjustment. Alas, a few minutes with “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” confirms that even mindlessness has its limits. It gives me no pleasure to add to the ridicule of Honey, whose real name is Alana, or her family.

I have just read a staggering report written by my colleagues Patrick D. Tyrell and William W. Beach for the Heritage Foundation´s Center for Data Analysis (I direct the Margaret Thatcher Centre for Freedom at Heritage.)[Snip] Ironically, Britain, through the tremendous determination of Iain Duncan Smith and his team at the Department of Work and Pensions, is starting to roll back the welfare state, precisely at the same time the current US administration is expanding it. The United States isn’t just gliding towards a continental European-style future of vast welfare systems, economic decline, and massive debts--it is accelerating towards it

Washington - In the wake of the Newtown, Connecticut school shooting, one of the state´s senators announced Tuesday he will introduce legislation requiring background checks to buy ammunition. "Ammunition is now the black hole in gun violence prevention," Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal said. Blumenthal said it is illegal to sell either guns or ammunition to certain groups of people including felons, the mentally ill and those who commit domestic violence. But under current law someone can buy bullets from a gun store without any review of the person´s background.

Who hasn’t seen the television commercials for animal groups? With heart-touching music playing behind a montage of sad-looking dogs and cats, an announcer pleads for contributions to “save” the animals. No organization runs more of these highly effective ads than the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Many contributors agree to donate $18 a month, helping the ASPCA to bring in $111.3 million for the year ending June 2010. As 2012 came to an end, however, what the ASPCA did not advertise was the fact that, on December 26, $9.3 million in contributions

Since Rahm Emanuel won a landslide victory to become mayor of Chicago in 2011, he has touted the city as “world class.” Chicago is America’s third-largest city, and is one of its three largest convention cities. It has the nation’s second busiest airport. It has highly rated cultural offerings: the Chicago Symphony, a vibrant local theater industry, great museums. But in one area Chicago has clearly staked its claim to number one. In 2012, Chicago recorded 505 murders. That may not sound all that bad, since in some years in the past two decades

The only way to finance a big European-style state is to have it paid for by massive taxation of everyone, mostly the middle class. Right now, we are avoiding honest debate on this fact. The central issue of our time is the debate over the size and scope of government. Two unpleasant but undeniable mathematical truths limit the feasible policy choices. The recent sound and fury of the fiscal cliff follies in the end signified nothing because the resolution was in fact just a denial of both truths. The first truth is that the current tax rates

There is a delicious scene in the movie Lincoln in which the first couple discuss an upcoming dinner party at the White House. Mary Todd Lincoln can´t figure out why her husband, a famed loner who openly loathes Washington society, invited rival Democrats and radical Republicans to his home. Suddenly, it dawns on her: the 13th Amendment! Abraham is going to try to wipe slavery from the U.S. Constitution, Mrs. Lincoln concludes with an accusatory glare, and he´s going to start by schmoozing key lawmakers! It´s a lesson Barack Obama could learn from history.

Virginia could become the first state to eliminate its gasoline tax if the state legislature votes to adopt Gov. Bob McDonnell’s alternative plan, which calls for raising the state sales tax and imposing additional vehicle registration fees in order to pay for roads throughout the state. “We simply cannot continue to do what we have always done and expect this problem to go away,” McDonnell told the press. “The gas tax is a stagnant revenue source, and no changes to it will provide a reliable growth mechanism for transportation in the state.”

WASHINGTON- Planners of President Barack Obama´s second inauguration are soliciting high-dollar contributions up to $1 million to help pay for the celebration in exchange for special access. The changes are part of a continuing erosion of Obama´s pledge to keep donors and special interests at arm´s length of his presidency. He has abandoned the policy from his first inauguration to accept donations up to only $50,000 from individuals, announcing last month that he would take unlimited contributions from individuals and corporations. A fundraising appeal obtained by The Associated Press shows the Presidential Inaugural Committee is going far beyond Obama´s previous

Cathedral officials tell The Associated Press the church will be among the first Episcopal congregations to implement a new rite of marriage for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender members. The church will announce its new policy Wednesday. As the nation´s most prominent church, the decision carries huge symbolism. An Egyptian magazine has claimed that six American Islamist activists who work with the Obama administration are Muslim Brotherhood operatives who enjoy strong influence over U.S. policy. The December 22 story was published in Egypt´s Rose El-Youssef magazine and was translated into English for the Investigative Project on Terrorism (IPT). New York/Washington - American International Group Inc, the insurer rescued by the U.S. government in 2008, said on Tuesday it is considering joining a lawsuit that claims the bailout terms were unfair, drawing angry condemnation from lawmakers. A leading congressional Democrat called criticism of the deal´s terms "utterly ridiculous," and former New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer - who probed AIG when he was in office - called the prospect of a lawsuit "insulting to the public." The White House declined to comment on the potential for a lawsuit but defended the $182 billion bailout.

Washington - A defense contractor whose subsidiary was accused in a lawsuit of conspiring to torture detainees at the infamous Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq has paid $5.28 million to 71 former inmates held there and at other U.S.-run detention sites between 2003 and 2007. The settlement in the case involving Engility Holdings Inc. of Chantilly, Va., marks the first successful effort by lawyers for former prisoners at Abu Ghraib and other detention centers to collect money from a U.S. defense contractor in lawsuits alleging torture. Another contractor, CACI, is expected to go to trial over similar

Energy: The further review the administration said was needed is done, with a Nebraska environmental agency saying it´s safe to build the pipeline that will bring oil, jobs and revenue from our friendly northern neighbor. After kicking the Canadian oil barrel down the road, the Obama administration may soon be forced to approve the Keystone XL pipeline or come up with another excuse to block it after a report from the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality declared it would have "minimal environmental impacts" on the state and its sensitive aquifers. Friday´s report triggered a 30-day deadline

After making it past one “fiscal cliff” with more to come, it’s an odd time for President Obama to be picking a fight with Congress over his choice to run the Pentagon. In many ways, Mr. Obama’s choice, former Sen. Chuck Hagel, a Republican from Nebraska and a Vietnam veteran with two Purple Hearts, is a man without a party who has plenty of detractors on both sides of the aisle. Even before it became official Monday, Mr. Hagel’s nomination had kicked up a cloud of consternation from those on the right who questioned his commitment to Israel and his

Politics: At what point does environmental zeal descend into inhumane policy? Try the ethanol mandate, which is now creating a wave of state-sponsored hunger in poor countries like Guatemala as food is diverted to fuel. In a buried item in Saturday´s New York Times, Elisabeth Rosenthal reported that growing demand for biofuels in the U.S. is having a catastrophic impact on the small poor nations south of our border, such as Guatemala. The problem is not the usual suspect of the past — local socialist policies — but the socialism going on up north called the ethanol mandate,

A sometimes controversial exploration of how to save Detroit culminated today with the release of the massive Detroit Future City plan that suggests future investment in population centers, such as the West McNichols hospital corridor and Midtown, and allowing other areas to be used for other purposes — some of them neighborhoods where Detroiters have lived for generations but that have slowly lost population and vigor over time. Some of those areas might include Brightmoor, some blocks west of City Airport and parts of the lower east side. Among the most innovative ideas in the

Kwame Kilpatrick’s pre-Christmas gift from a Chicago pastor has the former mayor in trouble again with his parole officer. It’s not that Kilpatrick received the $2,000 in cash on Dec. 11 in a transfer to a Walmart in Chesterfield Township. It’s that Kilpatrick lied about it, according to Michigan Department of Corrections spokesman Russ Marlan. When a parole officer questioned Kilpatrick last Friday about whether the former Detroit mayor had reported all income and gifts he received for December, Kilpatrick said that he had, Marlan said Tuesday. “It appears to be deception regarding finances,” Marlan said. “This isn’t the first
