Ali Gharib mischaracterizes my piece in The New Republic in many ways while also avoiding the main question of whether a right-wing Republican former Senator would be a better Defense Secretary than Michèle Flournoy. He begins by using insulting phrases (“cobbles together,” “misguided”), then imputes to me positions I don’t hold, and then misrepresents what I said. I appreciate that he and Peter Beinart have offered me a chance to reply. I can’t take up every quibble I have—and anyway, these back-and-forth blogging exchanges grow tedious quite fast, for the writers as well

MIAMI -- Around 7:30 p.m. ET on Jan. 3, 2012, DeAndra Chapman wrote the following message on a CaringBridge page, a website that was providing family and friends with updates on the condition of her ailing 3-year-old daughter: It is with an overwhelmingly heavy heart that I type this status. Today, after a seizure, Starla left us. And after two minutes of chest compressions she was revived. We later found that another ECHO showed even more decreased heart function than before. She is now on life support and we need a miracle!!!!!!

Have we gone too far? It´s a question we ask at the outset of every outrageous new reality series—be it "Survivor" or "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo." It´s also usually an early sign of a show´s success. (Snip) "All My Babies´ Mamas," a one-hour reality special slated to air in the spring of 2013, features Carlos "Shawty Lo" Walker, an Atlanta-based hip-hop artist with 11 children by 10 different women. Oh, he´s also got a 19-year-old girlfriend, who´s a year shy of his oldest child. By the looks of the leaked sneak peak and an early press release

A pro-lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender group issued a statement today urging President Barack Obama not to nominate Chuck Hagel as secretary of defense. "GetEQUAL strongly opposes the potential nomination of Chuck Hagel to become the next Secretary of Defense. Hagel has, time and time again, taken every opportunity to lambast and denigrate lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Americans, and the Cabinet is no place for this kind of disrespect," writes the chair GetEQUAL´s board Tanya Domi. After every act of incomprehensible violence, the world asks whether the killer could have been identified ahead of time. It´s as automatic as the call for more gun control and better mental health services. (Snip) The vast majority of mentally ill people won´t commit assault, rape, arson or homicide, although the risk rises sharply among those who abuse drugs and alcohol.

Senator Harry Reid, the Democratic majority leader, said today on the Senate floor that Hurricane Katrina was "nothing in comparison" to Hurricane Sandy:(Snip for video)"When we had that devastating Katrina, we were there within days, taking care of Mississippi, Alabama, and especially Louisiana," said Reid. "Within days. We are now past two months with the people of New York. And the people of New Orleans, in that area, they were hurt, but nothing in comparison to what´s happened to the people in New England."

Another of Hurricane Sandy’s victims expressed his disgust with the president this afternoon: “He’s a phony, he’s a liar. Straight out liar. He said to me, face to face, that, ‘he’s going to cut the red tape.’ We’re two months now, and no red tapes been cut. He told me things are going to be taken care of, FEMA has to listen to him.” Also, as a bonus, wait for his take on the extension of unemployment benefits.

House Republicans signaled Thursday they will not follow rules in President Obama´s healthcare law that were designed to speed Medicare cuts through Congress. The House is set to vote Thursday afternoon on rules for the 113th Congress. The rules package says the House won´t comply with fast-track procedures for the Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB) — a controversial cost-cutting board Republicans have long resisted. The rules package signals that Republicans might not bring up Medicare cuts recommended by the IPAB — blocking part of a politically controversial law, and resisting Medicare spending cuts.

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) suggested Friday that Republicans should be willing to shut down the government if they are unable to extract suitable concessions in the upcoming negotiations over the debt ceiling and sequestration. In an op-ed in the Houston Chronicle, Cornyn says that President Obama´s insistence that he will not negotiate over the debt ceiling again "is unacceptable" and that Republicans should put the president on notice over the potential consequences. "The coming deadlines will be the next flashpoints in our ongoing fight to bring fiscal sanity to Washington," Cornyn writes.

A radical new kind of airship funded by the US military is about to make its first test flight - and it looks uncannily like the Thunderbird 2 craft from the classic TV show. The Aeroscraft airship will carry three times as much as the biggest military cargo planes over thousands of miles, use a third of the fuel, and it doesn´t even need a landing strip. It could also have major implications for cargo haulage, and almost everything now laboriously transported across the planet´s surface by boat, train and lorry could within years be carried through the skies,

On January 2, Vanity Fair ran an all-out attack on the constitution, the 2nd Amendment, and common sense in a column by Kurt Eichenwald titled, "Let´s Repeal the Second Amendment." Eichenwald´s approach consists of attacking the NRA, arguing that gun owners avoid discussing more gun control by saying they don´t want to "politicize" shootings, and taking the standard progressive position that there wasn´t really a right to keep and bear arms until Justice Antonin Scalia created one in recent Supreme Court decisions. One of his criticisms of the NRA is that they opposed forcing "states to

RUSH: This is hilarious. I have CNN on one of my monitors here, and you may have heard that Hugo Chavez -- the dictator and communist leader in Venezuela -- is nearing room temperature. And this has the CNN people distressed. I mean, he´s a great socialist leader! He´s done great things to impoverish his people, but everybody´s equal down there. It´s cool. And, of course, with Chavez nearing the great reward, the Great Socialist in the Sky, they´re bringing on (in advance of his expiration) a bunch of tributes. Normally they wait ´til people die to do tributes, but I

Whitlock went on to make a series of controversial statements, likening the National Rifle Association to the Ku Klux Klan and then implying that Fox News host Bill O’Reilly was a “slave overlord.” On Wednesday, Whitlock took to his Twitter account, which has a following of over 155,000, to liken Hoover

The President, who has described the day of the shootings as the ‘worst day of my presidency,’ is seen bowing his head and closing his eyes as John Brennan, his deputy national security adviser, informs him about the tragic events unfolding in Newtown, Connecticut. In the wake of the tragedy, the president has tasked his deputy Joe Biden with leading a task force

It’s a good morning indeed, I think,” Pelosi said, as she began her weekly press conference on Capitol Hill on Friday. “155,000 jobs added in December.” “Good pace, going in the right direction,” she said. “1.8 million private sector jobs gained in 2012. December was the 34th consecutive month of private-sector job creation.”

Out of all the guests to talk Hugo Chavez´s illness, CNN brought on Chavez-fan Oliver Stone on Friday. Stone lauded him as "magnanimous, warm, warm man, big man." Anchor Suzanne Malveaux actually played clips of Stone´s documentary involving Chavez, which Time magazine called a "love story" for the dictator. Yes, this is the same network whose founder said he trusted the North Koreans and defended Kim Jong Il. [Video below the break. During his Tonight Show monologue Thursday evening, Jay Leno took a shot at Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), joking that the senator looks like the type of person who heard “Go ‘F’ yourself” a lot in his grade school days. Earlier this week it was reported that Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH) told Sen. Reid to “go f*** yourself” after the senator accused the Republican leader of “running a dictatorship” in the House of Representatives. “Boy, it is starting to get nasty in Washington,” Leno remarked. “According to Politico, after being publicly accused by

Speaking on "The Andrea Tantaros Show with Jason Mattera," which debuted this week, the Kentucky Republican said that while he hasn´t ruled a presidential run in 2016 in or out, the GOP is going to have to turn to somebody like him to win enough voters to beat a Democrat. Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., offered legislation today to end federal funding for Planned Parenthood, thus reviving a fight from the last Congress that had Republicans and Democrats talking about a government shut down. “As a woman, I believe America deserves better than abortion,” Blackburn said in a statement on her bill. “America shouldn’t celebrate abortion and our taxpayers shouldn’t subsidize abortion businesses like Planned Parenthood, who profit from the destruction of human life with taxpayer money. It’s fiscally irresponsible and morally indefensible.” The bill would “prohibit family planning grants from being awarded to any entity that performs abortions.”

With all the fuss over political cliff dives and President Obama´s gaffes, this fresh Gallup Poll almost slipped by unnoticed. Faced with the prospect of 1,478 more days of empty Obama promises and speeches, at least half of Americans have now decided that America´s best days are behind us. While whopping majorities expect this year´s economy will remain troubled. That federal deficits will continue. That crime will increase. Taxes too. Along with foreign turmoil. While America´s influence and power decline globally. Good thing these geniuses voted to return the Chicago crowd

President Obama is expected to name former Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.) as his next Defense secretary early next week, according to reports. White House officials would not confirm that Hagel has been selected by the president, but multiple reports cited outside sources saying that the announcement could come on Monday or Tuesday. Hagel’s selection, which was first reported by Foreign Policy on Friday, would set off a major confirmation battle. Pro-Israel groups have mobilized against Hagel

Time Warner Cable, in a rather blunt statement, said yesterday that the company would no longer carry Current TV, which was just sold to Al Jazeera. Saying the move was not political, the company cited Current’s low ratings as the reason. In an editorial, the New York Times called the move “unfortunate,” arguing that Time Warner “could block access to an important news source.” “Our agreement with Current has been terminated and we will no longer be carrying the service,” the company said. “We are removing the service as quickly as possible.”

The White House in any modern administration has an official photographer whose duty is to take pictures all day long of official and unofficial activities of the President. Sometimes those events are obviously momentous, while others only become so in retrospect. The White House releases some into the public domain on its Flickr site, but only those that please the administration. Others — like the photos of Barack Obama being briefed on the unfolding attack on our consulate in Benghazi on September 11th — require a little more effort to have released.

Yesterday alone, eight new bills were introduced relating to gun control. Two conservative bills were introduced relating to ending “gun free zones” under federal law. Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) led the way with four bills introduced. Her husband was shot to death in 1993 and her son was severely injured when Colin Ferguson, a mentally unstable black militant (he spent time in his apartment chanting, “all the
