WASHINGTON — The State Department says Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is speaking with staff and reviewing paperwork while she continues to recover from a blood clot in her head. Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland says Clinton has been "quite active" on the phone Wednesday with State Department aides. She says doctors will continue to monitor her progress. Clinton was admitted to a New York hospital Sunday and is being treated with blood thinners to dissolve a clot in the vein behind the right ear. As President Barack Obama heads into his second term, he faces a pessimistic and weary public, according to a USA Today/Gallup poll released late Tuesday. The percentage of Americans satisfied with the direction of the country stands at a paltry 23 percent in a poll taken Dec. 14-17. By a margin of 50 to 47 percent, respondents said the country´s best years are over. Fifty percent of respondents said it is somewhat or very unlikely that today´s youth will have a better life than their parents. That pessimism and negativity extends to the president, according to the poll.

A while back, we posted a chart comparing the offers presented by President Obama and House Speaker John Boehner in the fiscal cliff talks. Since then, details of Boehner’s “plan B” option became clearer, and Vice President Biden and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell hashed out a final deal and got it passed. So here’s that same chart, with the most fleshed-out version of plan B, and the final plan, included: The ultimate deal contained no spending cuts, $600 billion in new revenue and $30 billion in stimulus spending in the form of extended unemployment insurance (UI) benefits.

The Perot Museum of Nature and Science has been open exactly one month, but it’s safe to say it’s a hit. By midday Monday, 116,000 visitors had passed through the museum since Dec. 1, when it opened to local fanfare and national praise. In addition, 12,000 memberships were sold in December. Museum CEO Nicole Small said the figures were higher than expected. “We’re pleased with the overwhelming response from the community.” She attributed the crowds to favorable publicity and strong word-of-mouth response by visitors.
