The House Ethics Committee has decided to close its investigation into preferential mortgages doled out under a controversial VIP program without taking any action. The panel said it was not taking any action on members who received more affordable mortgages under the program, instituted by the now-defunct Countrywide Financial because while allegations surrounding the program and lawmakers involved "serious matters," they largely fell outside its jurisdiction. For example, many of the allegations pertain to actions outside the Ethics Committee´s statute of

From the Mohawk Valley Observer-Dispatch comes this timeless example of big-government dissonance: ALBANY–New York state has spent nearly $6 million over the past three years on subsidies for Remington Arms Co., the two-century-old factory in Ilion that makes firearms including semiautomatic rifles used by the military and police and like those used in the recent mass killings in Connecticut and Webster, N.Y. Though several elected leaders in this tough-on-guns state want tighter restrictions on those military-style weapons, none say it´s time to stop supporting the local company and risk the nearly 1,000

A rescue worker dove into a near-frozen lake to save an 11-year-old dog and the daring man who had fallen through the ice attempting to rescue him. Jim Swayze of Brownstown Township, Michigan was walking his Walker Coonhound, Bart, near Lake Eerie Thursday afternoon when Bart wandered off and fell through a thin sheet of ice covering the water. ´I tried to walk around to him and it was just too deep, and I couldn´t get to him,´ Swayze told ClickonDetroit.com. Bart kept his front two paws on the ice while his body was submerged in the freezing water.

The more you learn about the “real” Margaret Thatcher, the more you have to admire her.[Snip] The latest slew of documents released by the National Archives reveals her bludgeoning world leaders into backing her effort to liberate the Falkland Islands in 1982. She dashed off letters to them from her desk at Number 10 like the clichéd “angry of Tunbridge Wells.” “No, Mr Mitterand – you will not sell missiles to the Argentine!” “No, Mr Reagan, you will not tell the enemy about our battle plans!” More power to your elbow, Mrs T! With gangland shootings becoming an every-day occurrence in Chicago, the Board of Commissioners in surrounding Cook County is trying anew to tackle the deadly problem -- with another tax. But already, some are questioning whether the move is more about making a statement than addressing the violence. Under the new law, Cook County is charging an additional $25 tax on every handgun sold inside county lines. Gun shop owner Fred Lutger said this fee targets legal gun buyers, and not the gangsters responsible for many of Chicago´s homicides. "They make it sound like it´s a tax but

Not much to be said about the fiscal cliff until America plunges over it, pulling the rest of us with it, suffice it to say that this now virtually annual political charade is getting somewhat tiresome. One minute its Eurogeddon threatening to plunge the world into never ending depression, the next it´s another US budget crisis. So here´s the West Wing on the related "debt ceiling" negotiations--that one´s coming up for renegotiation any moment too. It´s always the end of the world until the last minute, when, lo and behold, it´s not. The so-called fiscal cliff grew out of

A major roadblock in the negotiations between the International Longshoremen´s Association and port employers has been overcome, averting a crippling strike that threatened to shut down 15 ports along the East and Gulf Coasts starting on Saturday. The container royalty payment, or the amount of money port workers receive based on the size of the containers coming into port, was the largest point of contention between the port workers´ union and the Maritime Alliance that represents port operators. The two reached an agreement regarding the royalty payment on Friday, a day before an existing contract was set to expire

President Obama likes to talk about making sure “the biggest corporations pay their fair share.” Treasury secretary Tim Geithner calls for tax reform to close loopholes and subsidies. Budget hawks say federal spending must be curbed. Congress and federal environmental regulators claim they are doing everything they can to save endangered species. By doing nothing and waiting for December 31 to pass, all of those folks could strike a blow in support of each of these policies. All they have to do is let the federal production tax credit (PTC) for wind energy expire on schedule this coming Monday.

The office of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) responded to reports today that President Barack Obama called him and other congressional leaders to receive updates about negotiations to avoid the Jan. 1 "fiscal cliff" by noting that it was the "first time McConnell has heard from any Democrat, including the President, on this since Thanksgiving." The President and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) made a show of returning to Washington this week, as if to continue negotiations--when their open opposition to Speaker of the House John Boehner´s "Plan B" last week helped doom that plan to defeat

According to reports, Mr Zucker is eyeing ABC´s Chris Cuomo, the network´s legal correspondent and co-anchor of ´20/20.´ Since taking over as president of the cable network in November, Mr Zucker has been trying to build up prime-time news lineup, expand coverage beyond politics and war, and increase Hollywood coverage. Now he just needs some new blood. ´Jeff’s still looking for an anchor he can basically make the centerpiece of the network,´ a source tells the New York Post.

It´s been more than two years since Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signed SB 1070 and six months since the Supreme Court upheld many parts of the law, including allowing local law enforcement authorities to question immigration status after a crime has been committed. Regardless, Mexico is still fighting the legislation in court. The Mexican government has asked the 9th District Court of Appeals to block a piece of the law that prohibits harboring of illegal immigrants, something the Supreme Court did not consider during their ruling last summer. Lawyers representing Mexico asked the 9th Circuit Court

The federal lawsuit filed on Wednesday and announced on Thursday is the latest battle with the city since teachers staged a week-long strike in September. It alleges that more than half of the tenured teachers fired in the most recent round of school closings and turnarounds were African American. But blacks make up less than 30 percent of the tenured teaching staff in the district and 35 percent of the tenured teacher population in the failing schools, the lawsuit claims.

It´s easy to have sympathy for those who have been misled by Facebook´s ever-morphing privacy controls. One should therefore have additional sympathy when the person led astray is a former director of Facebook and enjoys the name Zuckerberg. Randi Zuckerberg thought she had posted a picture to be only seen by her friends. Suddenly, it was there for all to see. Yes, all. The world. The whole misanthropic, green-eyed human race. Read Howie Kurtz’s defense of David Gregory, the NBC hairdo who recently brandished an ammunition magazine that is illegal to own in Washington, DC. NBC reportedly sought permission to show the magazine on Meet the Press, and the DC police turned them down. Gregory held the magazine up on the air anyway, in an attempt to browbeat NRA chief Wayne LaPierre into, well, something. LaPierre sensibly blew Gregory off. Now the DC police are investigating Gregory. Count on Kurtz to bring exactly zero real insight into the story. The Twitterverse has exploded over the news that Washington’s

House and Senate leaders from both parties will make their way to the White House this afternoon at President Barack Obama’s request for a last-ditch effort to reach an agreement to avoid the impending fiscal cliff. The parties will enter the meeting seeming as far apart as ever on an agreement to avert the combination of automatic tax hikes and spending cuts set to take effect on Jan. 1. Republicans(Snip) say they have acted – by passing an extension of all of the expiring Bush tax cuts, an unpalatable proposition to Democrats – and now it’s the Senate’s turn.

In a recent Associated Press story, Griffin praises the always impassioned anchor for being a “model figure” for the network. Griffin expressed confidence in Matthews’ style and where he is now. “He’s as good as he’s ever been,” Griffin told the AP. “He’s at a place in his life where he’s really comfortable in his own skin. In one of its last actions of the year, the United Nations General Assembly on Christmas Eve agreed to extend for another three years the formula that has U.S. taxpayers contributing more than one-fifth of the world body’s regular budget. No member-state called for a recorded vote, and the resolution confirming the contributions that each country will make for the 2013-2015 period was summarily adopted. The assembly also approved a two-year U.N. budget of $5.4 billion. The U.S. has accounted for 22 percent of the total regular budget every year since 2000, and will now continue

A new Gallup poll shows that the National Rifle Association, the target of a wave of intensely negative news coverage after the Newtown, Connecticut school shootings, still has a favorable rating of 54 percent. While down from the organization’s 60 percent favorable rating in 2005, that is still about a point higher than President Obama’s personal favorable rating. A Huffington Post average of the president’s favorable ratings places it at 52.3 percent. That average includes favorable ratings of 49 percent in a December 16 CBS News poll, 53 percent in a December 9 Wall Street

The unsuspecting victim was waiting at the elevated 40th Street station of the 7 line in Sunnyside at 8 p.m. “This lady, she just pushed the guy on the tracks. Then she ran away.
