The Obama administration´s chief environmental watchdog, EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson, is stepping down after a nearly four-year tenure marked by high-profile brawls over global warming pollution, the Keystone XL oil pipeline, new controls on coal-fired plants and several other hot-button issues that affect the nation´s economy and people´s health. Jackson, the agency´s first black administrator, constantly found herself caught between administration pledges to solve controversial environmental problems and steady resistance from Republicans and industrial groups who complained that the agency´s rules destroyed jobs and made it harder for American companies to compete internationally.

Over the last few months leading ladies have leapt to the defence of Hitchcock whose reputation has been tarnished in a drama based on the experiences of Tippi Hedren, who starred in The Birds and Marnie. According to The Girl, the BBC drama in which the Hedren is portrayed by Sienna Miller, Hitchcock subjected the former model to sexual harassment and physical abuse including threatening her with broken glass. In one scene the director lunges at Hedren and his attempt to kiss the actress borders on an assault. Her rejection, the drama alleges, was avenged by Hitchcock

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said this morning that it "looks like" Congress will fail to come to a deal to avert the year-end fiscal cliff. "It looks like that´s where we´re headed," Reid said. It´s not exactly a surprise — leaders left Washington last week without any imminent signs of a deal in the making. But it´s a grim warning just days before tax hikes and automatic spending cuts begin to take effect. Reid opened the Senate session by launching into a lengthy criticism of the House and Speaker John Boehner, saying

Europe: Ayn Rand once said: "We can evade reality, but we cannot avoid the consequences of evading reality." Witness France´s unpaid entitlements, especially its faltering social security system, as a cautionary tale for the U.S. Two years ago, French citizens rioted across the nation, angered by then-President Nicolas Sarkozy´s timid effort to put the country´s social security system on a sustainable footing, by raising the retirement age — from 60 to 62. That minor reform led to Sarkozy and his center-right party being thrown out of office, and replaced by socialist Francois Hollande.

David Gregory and Piers Morgan have both met the Alinskyite Right, and progressives in positions of power should take note. Both men are the targets of digital petition drives aimed at holding them to their own standards, and ridiculing them, invoking Rules 4 and 5 from Rules for Radicals: 4. "Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules." If the rule is that every letter gets a reply, send 30,000 letters. You can kill them with this because no one can possibly obey all of their own rules. 5. "Ridicule is man´s most potent weapon." There is no defense

At 12:54 a.m., on Saturday December 22, President Barack Obama and his family arrived at Kailua, a Hawaiian town on the island of Oahu. Almost five days later, Obama, leaving his wife and kids behind, departed the island to return to Washington, D.C. Obama’s vacation lasted a brief 118 hours, according to pool reports. So what did Obama do during his vacation? Mainly, he golfed. Obama spent about 17 and a half hours golfing this Christmas vacation. On December 26, Obama left his vacation home at 9:27 to spend about 6 hours on the links, with buddies

At the moment it is a faint object, visible only in sophisticated telescopes as a point of light moving slowly against the background stars. It doesn´t seem much – a frozen chunk of rock and ice – one of many moving in the depths of space. But this one is being tracked with eager anticipation by astronomers from around the world, and in a year everyone could know its name. Comet Ison could draw millions out into the dark to witness what could be the brightest comet seen in many generations – brighter even than the full Moon.

Owners of an old-school soda shop in St. Paul, Minnesota, have been warned to kick the habit and stop stocking novelty candy cigarettes. City inspectors threatened a misdemeanor citation and $500 fine if Lynden´s soda fountain is caught selling the fake smokes again. The Star Tribune reported on Wednesday that the offering violated an ordinance barring the sale of candy smokes and cartoon character lighters, which has been in place for nearly three years.A city spokesman said the warning came after inspectors received and looked into a complaint about the presence of the tobacco-themed products.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday denied Hobby Lobby’s request for an emergency injunction to block the health reform law’s contraceptive coverage requirements and said it will not decide the case before lower courts have ruled. Justice Sonia Sotomayor said the store owner doesn´t meet the extremely high standards required for a preliminary injunction. It´s not "absolutely" clear that they need the injunction and lower courts have been divided on whether to grant similar requests, she wrote, though she adds that the court doesn´t have much experience with similar religious-based claims for emergency injunctions.

President Obama has made a practice of celebrating numerous religious holidays from diverse traditions around the world. Wednesday he hailed Kwanzaa, a seven-day African-American tradition begun in 1966 by Ronald Everett. Everett adopted the name Maulana Karenga and said the holiday was to "give Blacks an alternative to the existing holiday and give Blacks an opportunity to celebrate themselves and their history, rather than simply imitate the practice of the dominant society." Karenga was an active participant in the violent Black Power struggles of the 1960´s and in 1971 was convicted of false imprisonment and felonious assault.

Government officials have vehemently denied claims that Hillary Clinton is undergoing extensive tests for brain cancer. The National Enquirer reported the debilitating illness was behind the Secretary of State´s recent collapse and that she was facing a barrage of medical tests to confirm the diagnosis. But a spokesman for the 65-year-old Democrat labelled the claims ´absolute nonsense´ and insisted Clinton was recovering well from the fall and subsequent concussion. ´The story... is absolute nonsense. The Secretary continues to recuperate at home,´ the spokesman told MailOnline.

Christmas Day has come and gone, all the presents have been unwrapped, and now kids who did not get what they wanted under the tree are taking to Twitter to complain about their loved ones´ lacking gift choices. A user named Michael Trujillo lamented that his sisters got iPods this year while he was only given $100, adding that he cannot buy anything with that money. Another aggrieved gift recipient Gianna Rodriguez complained: ´Woooow all I got for Christmas was gift cards, perfume and slippers. My mom sucks at giving presents.´

Tyranny: A desperate, disturbing message from China found in a box of Halloween decorations is a reminder of how China "works," as U.S. corporate and political elites have noted. Has America gone from beacon to bought off? Despite a slew of laws to the contrary, it looks as though America´s vaunted trade relationship with China — the one hailed by the Obama administration and praised by CEOs from Siemens, Bayer, Coca-Cola, Citibank, and General Electric — remains what it always has been: a great slave empire.

Remember how many members of the media vowed to put aside their own little, selfish, partisan agendas and get serious about making this a safer and saner country for our children? Well, here we are 12 days out, and what´s that big media conversation on guns about? Whether or not "Meet the Press" host David Gregory broke a law by waving an empty ammunition clip on the air Sunday

Barack Obama in 2008 won an election on an upbeat message of change amid hopes that the first black president would mark a redemptive moment in American history. Four years later, the fantasies are gone. In continuing dismal economic times, Obama ran for reelection neither on his first-term achievements — Obamacare, bailouts, financial stimuli, and Keynesian mega-deficits — nor on more utopian promises. Instead, Obama’s campaign systematically reduced his rival, Wall Street financier Mitt Romney, to a conniving, felonious financial pirate who did dastardly things, from letting the uninsured die to putting his pet dog Seamus

Few things animate the ire of liberals more than the right to bear arms. Liberals loathe the Second Amendment and when horrific tragedies like the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut rear their ugly head, they are quick on the draw to call for more gun control. But just don’t ask liberals to practice what they preach. Senator Dianne Feinstein of California is readying legislation to re-introduce a ban on assault weapons. Yet, as Mark Levin pointed out, Feinstein owned a concealed firearm. She said, “If somebody tries to take me out

MOBILE, Ala. — Like a wedding cake with its top layer removed, the house next door to my friend Eddie Curran’s abode now sits with its entire top half shorn off entirely. Nearly half the shorn-off roof, along with big tree limbs and unspeakable other debris, is wedged between that house and Eddie’s. But aside from a few shingles missing and two back windows blown in, Eddie’s house is remarkably unscathed — save for the attic vent stack from the neighbor’s house that now sits peacefully on the bed of Eddie’s daughter,

Here are the top five trends I see in tech startups for 2013: 1. Our phones are becoming our remote controls for life. If we have a need for it in our daily lives, there should and will be an icon and app for it on our phone. It’s as simple as that. Our phones are our emergency kit for first-world problems. Whether it’s a taxi or a ride in the rain (Uber, Lyft), a mechanic (YourMechanic), a doctor’s appointment (ZocDoc), the literal remote control (AppleTV), a personal assistant (Exec), a cake-baker (Zaarly), groceries (Instacart),

Over the weekend, The Journal News newspaper published maps with the addresses and names of pistol permit holders in Westchester and Rockland counties. The information for the map was legally obtained by the paper through a Freedom of Information Act request, however it sparked a nationwide controversy among those who considered the map a privacy violation. This morning, State Senator Greg Ball weighed in by proposing legislation to keep gun records private and prevent the publication of similar stories in the future. He also blasted “the asinine editors at The Journal News” who published the map.

Listening to the latest media chatter, one could get the impression that murder in the US is historically bad and getting worse. As the Reverend Al Sharpton put it, "The time for their talk is over. Now´s the time for action, and real change on gun control." Actually, now would seem to be a very bad time for such action. The reason is simple: the murder rate is historically low and is already trending downward. In fact, the murder rate in 2011 was the lowest since 1961: 4.7 murders per 100,000 people.

Nearly all the major players in the fiscal cliff negotiations are starting to agree on one thing: A deal is virtually impossible before the New Year. Unlike the bank bailout in 2008, the tax deal in 2010 and the debt ceiling in 2011, the Senate almost certainly won’t swoop in and help sidestep a potential economic calamity, senior officials in both parties predicted on Wednesday.

The obituary for conservatism has been running for six weeks now since the election. (Snip) A standard refrain is that conservatism needs to change both its message and its methods if it ever hopes to be heard again. It’s time for an extreme makeover. I have a little different message for conservatives: It’s time to go deeper. Politics is only the shallow topsoil of the American political debate. But the real work of conservatives now is not at that superficial, topsoil level, it is in the deeper soil of policy and the tap root of values

WASHINGTON--The economic threat that has kept many Americans on edge for months is nearing reality, unless the White House and Republicans cut a budget deal by New Year’s Day. Huge tax increases. Deep cuts in domestic and defense programs. The likelihood of sinking stock prices, reduced consumer spending and corporate layoffs. The risk of a recession within months. Still, the start of 2013 may turn out to be far less bleak than feared. For one thing, the two sides may strike a short-term agreement before New Year’s that postpones spending cuts until spring.
