Massachusetts Free for All
Over John Kerry’s Senate Seat

Barring an unexpected Senate confirmation fight or the Mayan apocalypse, John Kerry will be the next secretary of State. No wonder a small battalion of Democrats is maneuvering to run for Kerry’s Senate seat in Massachusetts, and one of the names being floated is Teddy Kennedy Jr. On the surface, Kennedy’s candidacy might seem plausible. After all, he is Teddy’s son, and after losing his leg to cancer as a youth, he has developed a career as an advocate for the disabled. But as a political novice who doesn’t live in the state,

WASHINGTON – Just three months after losing his campaign to be president of the United States, a politically wounded and weary Senator John Kerry took a routine fact-finding tour of the Middle East. It was one of countless overseas trips Kerry had taken in his two decades in Congress. But this time, those accompanying the Massachusetts Democrat noticed something was different. On the return leg of the trip, during a late night stroll to the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, a crowd spontaneously gathered around the former Democratic nominee for the White House.

Defence cuts could place the security of Britain and the rest of the world in danger, the Archbishop of York warned on Friday night. A week later, the NRA did speak up, and many in the mainstream media took to Twitter to attack what the group was saying. Another simply called it “nuts.”(Snip for Tweets)Mother Jones‘ David Corn slammed LaPierre for taking no questions and called the statement “propaganda,”

The Environmental Protection Agency took a strategic timeout on their zealous regulatory agenda in the run-up to last November’s election, lest their many ambitious plans for job-killing regulations should put a damper on President Obama’s prospects. Post-election, however, it has been full steam ahead for the independent agency, and they are finally starting to release some of the some of the rules and regulations to which we are all going to be forced to adjust over the coming years. On Friday of last week, the EPA issued a new soot rule

After the failed effort to get the fiscal cliff “Plan B” passed this week, some powerful conservatives on Capitol Hill are reportedly pushing for Wisconsin Republican Rep. Paul Ryan to replace embattled House Speaker John Boehner. On Friday night’s “The O’Reilly Factor,” fill-in host Laura Ingraham said her sources indicate a coup may already be underway in Congress. “I had a well-placed conservative voice today on the Hill email me and said he’s beginning to hear rumblings — I already gave something away, ‘he’ — he’s beginning to hear of a move to replace the speaker of the House,”

A day after efforts to avert the fiscal cliff collapsed, President Obama said Friday that he again asked Republican and Democratic leaders in Congress to work out a deal on middle-class tax cuts and unemployment benefits that would prevent taxes for most Americans going up on Jan. 1. “That’s an achievable goal that can get done in 10 days,” Mr. Obama said at the White House. “Everybody’s got to give a little bit in a sensible way. We move forward together, or we don’t move forward at all.” The president spoke Friday

PHILADELPHIA – The family of a Philadelphia teenager who says she was mocked by her geometry teacher for wearing a Mitt Romney T-shirt to class has sued the teacher and the school district. The Philadelphia Inquirer reports the lawsuit claims the district ignored 16-year-old Samantha Pawlucy´s right to free speech. The lawsuit claims the district let other students harass Pawlucy and subjected her to emotional distress. It seeks unspecified damages. A district spokesman won´t comment. Teacher Lynette Gaymon has apologized to Pawlucy. A telephone message left Friday for Gaymon hasn´t been returned. Pawlucy says the teacher questioned why

BLERANCOURT, France — For Patrick Laplace, the mayor of this trim little town, the Socialist government’s decision to legalize same-sex marriage in France is a colossal mistake. Laplace has not taken his stand for political reasons. He belongs to the Radical Party, a loyal ally of the majority Socialist Party in Parliament. Nor has he decided for religious reasons. Laplace has faith in God but puts no stock in the organized church. His opposition, he said, arises from a rational analysis defining marriage as the union of a man and a woman for family and filiation.

The CIA on Friday said that a Hollywood movie portraying the hunt for Osama bin Laden “departs from reality” in significant ways, and emphasized that despite assistance it provided to the filmmakers, the agency had no control over the final product. In an unusual letter to CIA employees, acting Director Michael Morell said that the highly anticipated film, “Zero Dark Thirty,” leads viewers to believe that a “few individuals” were behind the hunt for the al-Qaeda leader, instead of the “hundreds of officers” who were involved over the course of a decade.

Tax fight sends GOP into chaos

The main thing that has held Republicans together philosophically is the belief in holding down taxes. Not one of them in Congress has voted for a significant increase in more than two decades. Now that very issue is tearing the GOP apart and making it an all-but-ungovernable majority for Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) to lead in the House. Disarray is a word much overused in politics. But it barely begins to describe the current state of chaos and incoherence as Republicans come to terms with electoral defeat and try to regroup against a year-end deadline to avert

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo publicly declared the death of the US Constitution yesterday, December 20, 2012. Cuomo, in few short sentences, has begun laying the essential groundwork for the possible mass deportation of undesirable civilians to government "work" camps, re-education camps, and even death camps. After all, only disarmed Americans can be herded and shipped off in cattle cars to their uncertain fate. Cuomo statements are a more than warning shot across the bow of American liberty. They signal that the Democrats and the MSM have jettisoned any remaining loyalty to Constitutional freedoms and individual rights.

DECEMBER 21--A federal employee was formally reprimanded this month for excessive workplace flatulence, a sanction that was delivered to him in a five-page letter that actually included a log of representative dates and times when he was recorded “releasing the awful and unpleasant odor” in his Baltimore office. In a December 10 letter accusing him of “conduct unbecoming a federal officer,” the Social Security Administration employee was informed that his “uncontrollable flatulence” had created an “intolerable” and “hostile” environment for coworkers, several of whom have lodged complaints with supervisors.

Obama is likely to have a short trip this year; aides said he is scheduled to return Wednesday, a day after Christmas, to resume discussions with congressional leaders on how to avert the fiscal cliff. “Merry Christmas – because we didn’t get this done, I’ll see you next week,” Obama said after telling reporters he still had hope of striking a deal to prevent taxes from rising on the middle class next year.

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina - Looters ransacked supermarkets in several Argentine cities Friday, causing two deaths and evoking memories of widespread theft and riots that killed dozens during the country´s worst economic crisis a decade ago. Santa Fe Province Security Minister Raul Lamberto described the attacks on stores as simple acts of vandalism and not social protests. Lamberto said two people were killed by a sharp object and gunfire after attacks early Friday on about 20 supermarkets in the cities of Rosario and Villa Gobernador Galvez.

Fast forward to 2012 Nigeria, where a latter-day incarnation of selektion has been used—this time not against Jews, but against Christians. Nigeria is the most populous black nation on earth. Rules: Even if President Obama and John Boehner work out a deal to avoid the "fiscal cliff," the U.S. is still careening toward a another cliff, thanks to Obama´s massively expensive, if little noticed, regulatory agenda. As IBD reported before the election, Obama´s regulatory minions had temporarily put several costly new rules on ice to protect the president from charges that he was anti-business and to shield the economy from the effects of all these huge new regulatory burdens. But almost as soon as voters decided to give Obama four more years, his regulators once again sprang into action.

Republicans in need of encouraging signs for the new year need look no further than Tim Scott. He was appointed by Gov. Nikki Haley on Monday to succeed Jim DeMint as U.S. senator from South Carolina. Mr. Scott is a charismatic and principled economic and social conservative from the Deep South. He owes his rapid political rise in part to the tea party movement. Oh, and he is black. In a few weeks, when the new Congress convenes, Mr. Scott, 47, will take his place as the first black senator from a former Confederate state since Reconstruction.

President Obama began to unveil his second-term national security team on Friday, choosing John Kerry as the next Secretary of State. The Massachusetts Senator shares the President´s view of diminished American power and influence, which should only compound skepticism about the mooted selection of Chuck Hagel to lead the Pentagon. Mr. Obama has found his mirror-image in Mr. Kerry, who for 30 years has been one of the Democratic Party´s leading doves. The Senator´s antiwar activism after Vietnam is well known and may have cost him the Presidency in 2004.

The motion was This House would occupy Wall Street. He won. For a while, I sat there in the manner of Harold Abrahams after he loses to Eric Liddell in Chariots of Fire. But then, like Abrahams, I picked myself up and started trying to improve my performance.

I know just what a lot of those so-called DREAMers deserve to get for Christmas: a scolding. There are good and bad actors in every movement, and the bad ones -- if not kept in check -- can drag the good ones down with them. The term DREAMers refers to the estimated 1.4 million to 2 million young illegal immigrants who might have gotten some relief if the DREAM Act, which offered legal status in return for attending college or joining the military, hadn´t been torpedoed in the Senate in December 2010.
