THE HORROR IS BEYOND WORDS: a peaceful school in a peaceful town turned upside down by a man with guns, children and teachers killed, families torn asunder, lives altered unimaginably and forever. And then, almost as horrible, the familiarity of the event. We have been here before, we know the drill. The details of the shooting will be particular — the precise number of casualties, the killer’s exact route, how he finally was stopped or stopped himself — we know the drill. Over the coming days we will hear of grief counselors and evacuation plans.
Newtown, Conn. — This time, the shooter killed 27 people, including his elementary-schoolteacher mother, her principal and 20 children, most of them kindergartners. Then the shooter killed himself. Friday morning’s massacre in Newtown, Conn. — the second-deadliest shooting event in U.S. history — took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School, where more than 600 children from kindergarten through fourth grade spend their days. About 9:30 a.m., the day was interrupted by a burst of sound on the school intercom: screams. That was enough for some teachers to move their students away from doors
When the new version of the kapò like Kenneth Roth, head of Human Rights Watch, refuses to label as “genocidal” Iranian calls to obliterate Israel, predicting Israel’s destruction, dehumanizing the Israeli Jews, advocating the expulsion of Israeli Jews from the Middle East and denying the Holocaust to facilitate the next one, I have great fears for the future of the Jewish people. When the ignobile list of these Jewish defamers of their martyred people is getting every day longer, I have great fears for the future of the Jewish people. When the same company which formed out
Foreign Relations: A veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan is chained to a jail bed for months after trying to register a souvenir rifle with Mexican authorities, and the Obama administration does nothing to correct this injustice.Since August, Jon Hammar, a former Marine who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, has been held in a notorious Mexican prison effectively run by the Zetas drug cartel. His crime: declaring to Mexican authorities that he was transporting an antique shotgun after registering the gun with U.S. Customs agents on his way to a surfing trip with buddies in Costa Rica.
Eighty nine beautiful women from all over the world have gathered at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas to battle it out for the much coveted title of Miss Universe 2012. This preliminary stage helps to determine the 16 semi-finalists that will be announced on pageant night on December 19 together with results of the ongoing online voting on the Miss Universe website. ´Rounds´ at this stage in the competition included posing in bikinis and evening gowns, but unfortunately for Miss Guyana she became a fashion victim of her floor-sweeping evening dress
Political Correctness: The administration blames U.S. troop rudeness for insider attacks by Afghan training partners. So it´s issuing an etiquette book ordering them not to criticize "pedophilia" and other things Islamic. Echoing Afghan President Hamid Karzai, who recently compared our troops to terrorists, the administration says troop insensitivity to Afghan culture, not Taliban infiltration, is behind the recent spike in deadly green-on-blue attacks. In fact, a draft Army handbook advises troops against insulting not just sacred Islamic figures but the Taliban themselves. The 75-page manual lists among "taboo topics" of conversation between U.S. troops and their Afghan counterparts "making
A speaker at a protest against Michigan´s right-to-work legislation said that Republican governor Rick Snyder will "get no rest" from pro-union activists if Snyder signs the bill into law. "Just know one thing, Rick Snyder: You sign that bill, you won´t get no rest," said Rev. Charles Williams II at the Tuesday rally in Lansing, according to Michigan Capitol Confidential. "We´ll meet you on Geddes Road. We´ll be at your daughter´s soccer game. We´ll visit you at your church. We´ll be at your office." Snyder, who lives in a house on Geddes Road in Ann Arbor,
Andrew Rosenthal, the driving force behind the perpetually hyperventilating and self-contradicting editorials that fill up space in the New York Times’s opinion pages has now proven that he can hyperventilate and contradict himself in real-time. The editorial page editor demonstrated this rare talent today on Twitter as he responded to the shooting at a school in Newtown, Connecticut, first by denouncing a gun rights supporter who bemoaned that the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting was yet another massacre that had happened in an allegedly “gun-free zone,” a reaction Rosenthal dubbed “sickeningly quick.” Just three hours later
This week, U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice withdrew her name from consideration as the next Secretary of State, while current Secretary of State Hillary Clinton went from definitely testifying on Benghazi next week to a slightly less-certain "maybe" testifying on Benghazi next week. While Rice´s and Clinton´s respective announcements could be unrelated, it seems more than likely that they are connected. Moreover, it seems likely these developments are indicative of a State Dept that is preparing for bombshell Benghazi revelations to be released with or without Clinton´s testimony.
KTS Business Consulting’s recent audit of Brand USA—the government-subsidized corporation created by Congress to promote United States tourism that has been dogged by allegations of cronyism and waste—obtained by the Free Beacon shows a company without vision, motivation, or oversight. The audit found “a majority of the staff did not have any idea what the mission” of Brand USA was and that “all staff was in limbo as to what type of organization the Brand USA is.” The Daily Caller first reported Thursday on new expense reports and business audits that paint a picture
A few years ago, my small local hospital asked a senate staffer if she could assist them in obtaining federal money for a new building. So she did, expediting the process by which that particular corner of northern New Hampshire was deemed to be "underserved" and thus eligible for the fed gravy. At the ribbon-cutting, she was an honored guest, and they were abundant in their praise. Alas, in the fullness of time, the political pendulum swung, her senator departed the scene, and she was obliged to take a job out of state. Last summer,
Less than 1 percent of twins share an amniotic sac in their mother’s womb. The situation is rare and risky and some 20 percent of what are called monoamniotic twins die, often because the umbilical cord becomes entangled, cutting off the blood and food supply. But not Kate and Annie Carlson who were born at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital on November 7 at only 30 weeks old. These miracle twins defied the odds even though their cords were tied in a dangerous knot. A delivery team led by Dr. Susan Crowe performed a successful cesarean section
Gehenna, a synonym for Hell, is a real place, or so the Bible tells us. You can see it today. It is a valley outside Jerusalem, the valley of the son of Hinnom, and it was where worshippers of the idol Moloch sacrificed children to sate their god’s hungers. Gehenna was revived today in Newton, Connecticut, where as many as 20 children at last report were slaughtered in an elementary school this morning. We learn in the book of Kings that in the seventh century BCE, the prophet Jeremiah demanded that King Josiah destroy the idolator’s temple
Justin Webb, one of the presenters of BBC Radio´s Today programme, has tweeted something true, unpalatable and – in the circumstances – rather brave in response to the Connecticut school shootings. "A real effort to reduce gun ownership in America would result in a rural/metro and north/south divide and something like a new civil war," he wrote. That´s not a comment for or against legislation: Webb is drawing our attention to an aspect of American society that Europeans find very difficult to grasp, and also to the subterranean complexity of the gun control debate. The correlation between gun ownership and
"After a shooting spree," author William Burroughs once said, "they always want to take the guns away from the people who didn´t do it." Burroughs continued: "I sure as hell wouldn´t want to live in a society where the only people allowed guns are the police and the military." Plenty of people — especially among America´s political and journalistic classes — feel differently. They´d be much more comfortable seeing ordinary Americans disarmed. And whenever there is a mass shooting, or other gun incident that snags the headlines, they do their best to exploit the tragedy
Republicans have agreed to a tax increase of $800 billion over ten years as part of the negotiations regarding the so-called fiscal cliff. Even as Republicans refuse to call it a tax hike (“revenues,” indeed), there are better and worse ways to go about this unpleasant business, and one simple reform would raise all that money and more: eliminating the federal deduction for state and local taxes. While we would prefer no tax increase at all, eliminating this deduction would be a sensible reform of the tax code, and could be paired with tax cuts elsewhere
At the same time that New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg issued a statement going full bore after gun owners on the heels of the tragic school shootings in Connecticut, Mayor Thomas Menino of Boston issued a similar statement. It was just as strident and just as political: As a parent and grandparent, I am overcome with both grief and outrage by the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut. This unspeakable act of violence will forever imprint this day in our hearts and minds. My heart goes out to the families impacted by this senseless tragedy and the many others
Today, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, an ardent gun control advocate, moved to politicize the monstrous school shooting in Connecticut, issuing the following statement: With all the carnage from gun violence in our country, it’s still almost impossible to believe that a mass shooting in a kindergarten class could happen. It has come to that. Not even kindergarteners learning their A,B,Cs are safe. We heard after Columbine that it was too soon to talk about gun laws. We heard it after Virginia Tech. After Tucson and Aurora
By now, you’re probably aware that at least 26 people, including 18 children, were murdered today at Newtown, Connecticut’s Sandy Hook Elementary School. This tragedy happened despite the school district implementing new a “new safety policy designed to prevent situations such as what happened on Friday.” These new protocols included: Locking exterior doors during the day. Visitors required to ring the doorbell and register at the office. Photo ID required if staff didn’t recognize you. There was no provision for training and arming teachers and qualified parents. This was wishful thinking, assuming that everybody
According to ABC News, Ryan Lanza, the older brother of 20-year-old Connecticut school massacre perpetrator Adam Lanza, has told police that his brother has Asperger Syndrome and another “personality disorder.” ABC News reports: Neighbors described the younger man to ABC as “odd” and displaying characteristics associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder. Adam was found dead in the school. So was his mother, who taught kindergarten at Sandy Brook Elementary.
Paraguay’s industrial union, UIP, lashed at Mercosur over the incorporation of Venezuela as a full member and Argentina’s reiterated lack of respect for signed agreements and understandings. Eduardo Felippo, head of UIP, read a statement to the industrial lobby members at an end of the year event which also included President Federico Franco and several of his cabinet ministers. Felippo said that in its twenty years of existence Mercosur has been unable to complete any serious integration process and has also been unable to reach a trade agreement with the European Union.
WASHINGTON — The top contenders for the "big three" jobs in President Barack Obama´s second-term Cabinet are all white men, rekindling concerns among Democratic women about diversity in his inner circle. (Snip) "The boys network is alive and well," Democratic activist Donna Brazile wrote on Twitter after Rice withdrew. "The war on qualified women continues here in DC." Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and a close friend of the president, dropped out of consideration for the State Department job Thursday. That followed months of withering criticism from Republicans over her initial comments about the attacks
Liberal filmmaker Michael Moore lashed out at the National Rifle Association this afternoon after news broke about the horrific shooting in Connecticut. “The NRA hates freedom,” he wrote on Twitter. “They don’t want you to have the freedom to send your children to school & expect them to come home alive.” Moore insisted earlier that it was important for gun control proponents to discuss the issue – especially during times of tragedy. “The way to honor these dead children is to demand strict gun control, free mental health care,
The gunman who today slaughtered 26 people including 20 children used his teacher mother´s own guns to shoot students in her kindergarten class during his horrific killing spree at a Connecticut elementary school, it was revealed tonight. Adam Lanza, 20, was carrying a .223 rifle and two handguns when he entered the Sandy Hook Elementary school shortly after 9.30am and started gunning people down - after he had killed his mother Nancy, 52, at her nearby home. Witnesses say he was going from room-to-room shooting people after first killing the principal and psychologist execution style.
Tom Cruise? Really? That’s the question that Lee Child, author of the popular Jack Reacher thriller novel series, has been fielding for the past year about the casting of Cruise in the lead role of “Jack Reacher,” a film adaptation of Child’s “One Shot” (2005), in which Reacher — an ex-military police officer who wanders the country righting wrongs — investigates five apparently random killings by a sniper. Directed and adapted for the screen by Christopher McQuarrie (“The Usual Suspects,” “The Way of the Gun,” “Valkyrie”), the film will be released by Paramount on Dec. 21.
Britain´s violent crime record is worse than any other country in the European union, it has been revealed. Official crime figures show the UK also has a worse rate for all types of violence than the U.S. and even South Africa - widely considered one of the world´s most dangerous countries. The figures comes on the day new Home Secretary Alan Johnson makes his first major speech on crime, promising to be tough on loutish behaviour. The Tories said Labour had presided over a decade of spiralling violence.
