Bonding rituals important to the strength of our society? Do we not care about that? Well, the American people do. And they want to shop for it." - Wednesday, December 12, 2012, House Minority Leader Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) on the house floor Headline split by staff

WASHINGTON — The income stagnation that has hit the middle class in the last decade is complicating the Democrats’ position in the fiscal talks, making it more difficult for them to advocate across-the-board tax increases if a deal falls through. Many Democrats have derided the expiring tax cuts as irresponsible since President George W. Bush signed them a decade ago. Yet the party is united in pushing to make the vast majority of them permanent, even though President Obama could ensure their expiration at year’s end with a simple veto.

"President Obama´s ´Plan´ Adds $8.6 Trillion to the Debt," the minority side of the Senate Budget Committee contends. Here´s a chart put together by the Republicans on the committee to explain how Obama´s plan adds to the debt: The $400 billion in deficit reduction would be achieved by a $1.6 trillion tax hike, which Obama has proposed as part of the "fiscal cliff" deal. With Obama´s latest plan, debt in 2022 is expected to be $25.4 trillion; otherwise, in ten years, it is expected to be $25.8 trillion. "With the adoption of the Budget Control Act

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX): "There is no way, Mr. Speaker, that we should raise the eligibility age for Medicare, that we should not think carefully about how we approach the reform of Medicaid. And that we don´t the American people that Social Security is solvent. So, I would say move quickly to pass the middle class tax cuts that would be for all Americans, 100% up to 250,000 dollars. And let´s think about, moving into 2013, how we make this economy better by looking carefully at how we reform entitlements that are not hand-outs, but they are earned."

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said that he wasn´t responsible for helping President Obama to win a second term in an interview with ABC News´ Barbara Walters set to air Wednesday. Christie has been criticized by some Republicans for embracing President Obama in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, speaking appreciatively about the federal assistance offered to his state. But Christie adamantly denied that the bipartisan photo-ops with the president were of any assistance on Election Day. "First of all, I didn´t help [Obama] win," Christie said.

"I´m in the top two percent," said Peter Schiff, CEO of Euro Pacific Capital, this week on CNBC. "Right now, I´m paying 45 percent of my total income in income taxes ... You tell me, what´s fair about that when medieval serfs pay 25 percent, I´m paying half? I don´t care what the majority voted to do, they don´t have a right to steal my money just because they vote for it." But according to most Americans, they do. And that´s the problem. Santa Claus came to Capitol Hill on Wednesday to deliver a message to Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio): pass President Obama´s middle-class tax cut bill or you´ll be on the naughty list. The roly-poly white-bearded man dressed in his seasonal red attire slid right past the “Official Business Only” sign in the alcove to Boehner’s Capitol Hill digs. With an entourage of paparazzi (five photographers) and a handler from the liberal group “Catholics United,” “Santa” asked a good-natured Speaker staffer for “two minutes” of Boehner’s time. As the president gets closer to achieving his most cherished political ambition — raising taxes on the top earners in our country — I´ve started to wonder what satisfaction he, and those he´s convinced this is a good idea, will actually experience. Forget all the silly speeches. By any seriously objective standard, the president´s tax increases will do little or nothing to reduce his deficits or his approaching legacy of extraordinary national debt. Without increasing taxes more broadly and without structurally reforming our entitlement programs, which now appears likely, the president´s plan changes virtually nothing about the direction or funding of

As Secretary of State Hillary Clinton prepares to testify on Capitol Hill next week about last September’s attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, a Republican lawmaker is urging her to cut aid to Tunisia over its refusal to allow the FBI to talk to the only known detained suspect in the attack. Speaking on the U.S. House floor Wednesday, Rep. Frank Wolf (R-Va.) accused Tunisian authorities of hampering the FBI’s investigation into the attack in Libya’s second city, during which U.S. ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed.

Twenty blocks from the Capitol sits a 60-by-40-foot model of Washington, D.C., that military officials and others are using to prepare for Inauguration Day festivities. The D.C. model — complete with a two-foot-tall Washington Monument and toy-like recreations of the Capitol and White House — was being used for a military exercise to simulate the parade route on the real Pennsylvania Avenue NW. In addition to the model monuments, there were pink placards that showed where the different divisions will be located along the parade route, including designations for everything from bathrooms to areas for floats.

The Wisconsin Medical Examining Board on Wednesday sanctioned 11 more doctors for writing questionable sick notes to protesters demonstrating at the Capitol in February 2011. The board reprimanded six doctors, who also took classes in medical record keeping or physical exams as part of their discipline. The board said the doctors provided the notes without adequate documentation. "It appears that the entire sick note writing episode is finally closed," said Dr. Sheldon Wasserman, chairman of the medical board. [snip] The board gave five doctors administrative warnings, which aren´t considered disciplinary action.

This week Michigan became the 24th state in the country to adopt a right-to-work law. The passage of the bill by the state legislature, and eventual signing by Rick Snyder, the state´s Republican governor, brought a huge wave of protests in a state with deep union roots. Right-to-work laws have garnered a lot of national attention in recent years as more states have implemented this legislation that prohibits unions from requiring workers to pay dues as a condition of their employment. The laws are meant to regulate agreements between employers and labor unions that would

If this bit of information doesn´t offer mixed emotions, nothing will. For those who don´t understand, this technology really exists. It is getting more and more common. The type of 3D printer I have seen in action produces a solid block of plastic, layer by layer. It works like an ink jet printer. Two "inks" are used. One ink is soluble in a solvent, the other isn´t. When you are done printing the block, paper-thin layer by paper-thin layer, embedded in a block of soluble plastic is a complete device in a more substantial plastic.

The theater of the absurd in Washington revolving around raising tax rates on the wealthy is based on a fiction: massively raising the rates will result in additional revenue for the government. One of the constants in any analysis of income taxes paid in the United States since their inception in 1916 is the correlation between the top marginal rates and the taxes actually paid by the so-called wealthy. Short of turning America into Stalin´s police state and confiscating all the wealth of the "evil" one percent, the predictable behavior of this economic class

On Wednesday, Patrick Moran, son of Congressman Jim Moran (D-VA) and particularly dim James O’Keefe sting-ee, pleaded guilty to simple assault on girlfriend Kelly Hofmann, a charge that stemmed from a December 1 incident in which Moran allegedly slammed Hoffman’s head into a metal trash can cage, fracturing her skull and injuring her nose. It’s a horrible story that highlights an important, serious issue, but shortly after the news was reported, Michelle Malkin‘s Twitter repository, Twitchy.com, had decided that the real villains were Rachel Maddow, Sandra Fluke, the media, Rep. Moran, and, somehow, me,

Here´s an update on the nationwide legal challenges to ObamaCare by religious institutions that will be forced to provide insurance coverage for such things as abortion drugs, birth control and sterilizations that violate their beliefs. This story is a week old, actually. Strangely, you haven´t seen any real coverage of this development in mainstream media, perhaps because it concerns a crucial legal setback for Barack Obama and Kathleen Sebelius in a New York federal court.

NEW YORK- The Americans are bringing back Tom Watson as their Ryder Cup captain with hopes of ending two decades of losing in Europe. The PGA of America announced Watson´s selection Thursday morning on the "Today." Watson, an eight-time major champion and one of the most respected figures in golf, will be 65 when the 2014 Ryder Cup is played at Gleneagles in Scotland. That will make him the oldest captain in Ryder Cup history. He also is the first repeat captain for the U.S. team since Jack Nicklaus in 1987.

Dennis Miller has pointed to the recent and continuing evidence of the dichotomy between image and reality in the Obama world. Dennis, take a bow. This latest episode of inflammatory language coming from Michigan Democrats and Union officials provides some telling evidence of Obama´s selective concern for provocative and inappropriate political discourse. Obama´s implied consent has been evident throughout his presidency. I don´t ever recall his position regarding the unprosecuted Black Panther polling incident. If only a journalist would ask him to weigh in.

They arrested these nuts just in time. Superstar pop singer Justin Bieber was the target of a bizarre plot hatched by an imprisoned, Bieber-obsessed murderer who allegedly dispatched two New Mexico men to kill and castrate the teen hearthrob at his recent Madison Square Garden show, it was revealed yesterday. One of those men was busted upstate on Nov. 20 — allegedly with pruning shears that were to be used to cut off Bieber’s manhood at a price of $2,500 for each testicle, according to court documents.

After President Richard Nixon was forced from office in 1974, congressional investigators discovered what they believed was the full extent of his use of the FBI and the CIA to engage in domestic spying. In that pre-digital era, the spying consisted of listening to telephone calls, opening mail, and using undercover agents to infiltrate political organizations and, as we know, break into their offices. (Snip) But many Americans did complain to Congress, which in 1978 enacted the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, commonly called FISA. FISA provided that all domestic surveillance be subject to the search warrant requirement of the

It’s becoming quite clear that liberals are stonewalling on entitlement cuts while conservatives are caving on higher taxes for the wealthy. Barack Obama said yesterday that the Republicans would cave, asserting that he was “confident”: I´m pretty confident that Republicans would not hold middle-class taxes hostage to trying to protect tax cuts for high-income individuals. I don´t think they´ll do that. There have been rumors that Obama would consider changing the minimum age for Medicare to 67, but Obama’s statements belie that. He intoned: When you look at the evidence, it´s not clear that it actually

The recent demonstrations and protests in Iran over the increasingly perilous state of its economy are the latest and most powerful sign that the economic war is having a tangible impact. There is no doubt that punitive financial and economic sanctions have contributed greatly to the collapse of Iran´s currency, the rial. Iran now suffers from hyperinflation and the rial has fallen by 80 percent in the past year. As history has shown, durable hyperinflation such as this can result in public unrest and, occasionally, regime change.

The Supreme Court’s announcement Friday that it will take up gay marriage is more than a chance for the justices to recognize the emerging national consensus in support of gay rights. It is a chance for them to overrule the medieval views of Antonin Scalia. As if in response to the court’s announcement, the acid-tongued justice visited Princeton University late Monday and reiterated his opinion, expressed in a 2003 dissent, that a law banning sodomy is on par with laws forbidding bestiality or murder.
