Tim Carney: Jim DeMint was the
libertarian hero of the Senate

For libertarians, Christian conservative pro-lifer Jim DeMint was the best thing to come through the Senate in decades. DeMint, quitting early to run the conservative Heritage Foundation, embodied an underappreciated fact of life in Washington: The politicians who most consistently defend economic liberty are the cultural conservatives. The National Taxpayers Union gave DeMint a 93 percent rating last year, putting him third out of 100. DeMint scored 100 percent from the Club for Growth, whose sole focus is economic conservatism.

I´m getting sick and tired of people asking me why I´m running for president in 2016. The answer is that I have to run. The GOP can´t run another big government establishment candidate masquerading as a true conservative. So I´m stepping up to the plate. And I´m going to win, largely because my policies will appeal to young people, libertarians, and Reagan Democrats. But that’s enough of the generalities. Here are the twelve specific changes you can expect when I become your 45th president.

WASHINGTON — Your medical plan is facing an unexpected expense, so you probably are, too. It´s a new, $63-per-head fee to cushion the cost of covering people with pre-existing conditions under President Barack Obama´s health care overhaul. The charge, buried in a recent regulation, works out to tens of millions of dollars for the largest companies, employers say. Most of that is likely to be passed on to workers. Employee benefits lawyer Chantel Sheaks calls it a "sleeper issue" with significant financial consequences, particularly for large employers. "Especially at a time when we are facing

Merck´s charitable foundation has stopped giving money to the Boy Scouts of America. The Merck Foundation says the Boy Scouts´ exclusion of gays from its ranks and leadership positions conflicts with giving guidelines and the company´s nondiscrimination policy. The foundation says it will reconsider giving money to the Boy Scouts if they change their policy on sexual orientation. Merck CEO Kenneth C. Frazier was a scout in his youth. He received the "Good Scout" Award from the Philadelphia Cradle of Liberty Boy Scout Council in June. Records show the foundation gave $30,000 to The Boy Scouts of America in 2011

Cairo - A day after President Mohamed Morsi formally directed the military to help keep public order and authorized soldiers to arrest civilians, a spokesman on Monday sought to draw distinctions between the order and the forms of martial law that the Egyptian Army had previously imposed. The spokesman, Khaled Al-Qazzaz, said the president had called upon the military for the limited purpose of protecting polling stations during Saturday’s constitutional referendum. He also said the president had instructed the army to refer any civilians arrested by soldiers to a civilian court for trial, instead of military

Congressional Democrats on Monday pleaded with Gov. Rick Snyder (R) to veto legislation that would make Michigan a right-to-work state. Senior lawmakers met with Snyder in Detroit and urged him not to sign the law on union dues, which has moved quickly through the lame-duck session of the Republican-controlled Michigan Legislature over the vocal opposition of labor leaders. Ratification would make Michigan — the stronghold of organized labor — the 24th state in the country to pass right-to-work legislation that bans required payment of union dues. Sen. Since the 2012 presidential election, Republicans in Virginia and Ohio have floated the possibility of getting rid of their states´ "winner-take-all" systems of awarding electoral votes, proposing instead that they apportion their electoral votes by congressional district. In Virginia, state Senator Charles Carrico has introduced a bill that "would award one electoral vote to the winner of each of the state’s 11 congressional districts, and the state’s two at-large votes to the candidate that wins the majority of the districts." Carrico said part of the reason why he introduced the bill was because Mitt Romney won 63 percent

The public inauguration on the Capitol Building’s West Front — at which Roberts will administer a second, symbolic oath of office — will take place the next day. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Monday weighed in on efforts by Republican legislators in Michigan to roll back collective-bargaining rights. Michigan´s legislature is set to vote on the legislation in about a week. The right-to-work legislation bans unions from requiring members to pay dues while also earning benefits that were negotiated between unions and employers. Critics of the legislation say it dramatically undercuts unions´ bargaining power. He may have won the election but President Obama hasn´t given up the campaign. Aiming to bring public pressure on Republicans to back higher taxes for the rich in the "fiscal cliff" fight, the Obama-Biden campaign today began urging supporters to join a local, online phone bank to help the president blast the GOP. In an email, supporters are directed to a "Call Tool" where they are provided with somebody to call. Included is a telemarketing-style script to read. A successful effort will then be tabulated on a "leaderboard" of callers.

With American set to hit the debt ceiling again thanks to out-of-control government spending, the Washington Post has suggested a solution for President Obama: mint two platinum coins valued at $1 trillion each. What would this do? According to the Post: Thanks to an odd loophole in current law, the U.S. Treasury is technically allowed to mint as many coins made of platinum as it wants and can assign them whatever value it pleases. Under this scenario, the U.S. Mint would produce (say) a pair of trillion-dollar platinum coins.
