For libertarians, Christian conservative pro-lifer Jim DeMint was the best thing to come through the Senate in decades. DeMint, quitting early to run the conservative Heritage Foundation, embodied an underappreciated fact of life in Washington: The politicians who most consistently defend economic liberty are the cultural conservatives. The National Taxpayers Union gave DeMint a 93 percent rating last year, putting him third out of 100. DeMint scored 100 percent from the Club for Growth, whose sole focus is economic conservatism. I´m getting sick and tired of people asking me why I´m running for president in 2016. The answer is that I have to run. The GOP can´t run another big government establishment candidate masquerading as a true conservative. So I´m stepping up to the plate. And I´m going to win, largely because my policies will appeal to young people, libertarians, and Reagan Democrats. But that’s enough of the generalities. Here are the twelve specific changes you can expect when I become your 45th president. Source corrected by staff.

The distraught family of the nurse found dead after falling victim to a hoax phone call tonight met with Labour MP Keith Vaz in Westminster hours after he accused her employer of failing to support them. Clutching a picture of his dead wife Jacintha, Benedict Barboza, 49, stood shoulder-to-shoulder with his two teenage children in his first public appearance since her death last Friday. The 46-year-old nurse had been duped into putting through a phone call at King Edward VII Hospital in central London, which was treating the pregnant Duchess of Cambridge last week.

WASHINGTON — Your medical plan is facing an unexpected expense, so you probably are, too. It´s a new, $63-per-head fee to cushion the cost of covering people with pre-existing conditions under President Barack Obama´s health care overhaul. The charge, buried in a recent regulation, works out to tens of millions of dollars for the largest companies, employers say. Most of that is likely to be passed on to workers. Employee benefits lawyer Chantel Sheaks calls it a "sleeper issue" with significant financial consequences, particularly for large employers. "Especially at a time when we are facing

Merck´s charitable foundation has stopped giving money to the Boy Scouts of America. The Merck Foundation says the Boy Scouts´ exclusion of gays from its ranks and leadership positions conflicts with giving guidelines and the company´s nondiscrimination policy. The foundation says it will reconsider giving money to the Boy Scouts if they change their policy on sexual orientation. Merck CEO Kenneth C. Frazier was a scout in his youth. He received the "Good Scout" Award from the Philadelphia Cradle of Liberty Boy Scout Council in June. Records show the foundation gave $30,000 to The Boy Scouts of America in 2011

Former President Bill Clinton told a group of pharmacists in Las Vegas on Dec. 3 that white Americans who lack high school diplomas, and who have seen their life expectancy diminish in recent years, are "dying of a broken heart." “They could have said these people are dying of a broken heart,” Clinton told the American Society of Health System Pharmacists. “Because they’re the people that were raised to believe the American Dream would be theirs if they worked hard and their children will have a chance to do better--and their dreams were dashed disproportionally

Cairo - A day after President Mohamed Morsi formally directed the military to help keep public order and authorized soldiers to arrest civilians, a spokesman on Monday sought to draw distinctions between the order and the forms of martial law that the Egyptian Army had previously imposed. The spokesman, Khaled Al-Qazzaz, said the president had called upon the military for the limited purpose of protecting polling stations during Saturday’s constitutional referendum. He also said the president had instructed the army to refer any civilians arrested by soldiers to a civilian court for trial, instead of military

Asia News recently reported how the misogynist crime of female genital mutilation (FGM) continues to be a “widespread traditional practice” in “rural areas and more remote areas of Indonesia, particularly the island of Java.” The story makes sure to remind us, naturally, that while this crime is being perpetrated in a Muslim country, the crime “is not a rule set in a rigid manner by the precepts of Islam.” It is only widespread, we are consoled, because of the actions of “the more extreme and integral fringe.”

Congressional Democrats on Monday pleaded with Gov. Rick Snyder (R) to veto legislation that would make Michigan a right-to-work state. Senior lawmakers met with Snyder in Detroit and urged him not to sign the law on union dues, which has moved quickly through the lame-duck session of the Republican-controlled Michigan Legislature over the vocal opposition of labor leaders. Ratification would make Michigan — the stronghold of organized labor — the 24th state in the country to pass right-to-work legislation that bans required payment of union dues. Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.)

Since the 2012 presidential election, Republicans in Virginia and Ohio have floated the possibility of getting rid of their states´ "winner-take-all" systems of awarding electoral votes, proposing instead that they apportion their electoral votes by congressional district. In Virginia, state Senator Charles Carrico has introduced a bill that "would award one electoral vote to the winner of each of the state’s 11 congressional districts, and the state’s two at-large votes to the candidate that wins the majority of the districts." Carrico said part of the reason why he introduced the bill was because Mitt Romney won 63 percent

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday scoffed at international criticism of his plans to build settler housing on occupied land east of Jerusalem. Speaking to foreign journalists, he compared the E1 plan to build between largely Arab east Jerusalem and the West Bank settlement of Maaleh Adumin, to the accepted goal of a Palestinian state embracing the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. "I don´t understand how people say that a Palestinian state cannot exist if Maalah Adumim is connected to Jerusalem,´ he said. "These are the same people who say that you´ll have a Palestinian state

While Wanxiang is not buying A123´s government business — which includes all military projects — GOP lawmakers said they opposed the deal because it could still hamper national security by giving the Chinese government access to U.S. secrets. “A123’s core battery technology is used in all of their business applications and allowing the sale of one

A Friday afternoon report at Politico brings news of another “historic” moment in the Obama presidency, which promised “transparency” but has transformed much of American government into a riddle, wrapped in mystery, inside an enigma: Because inauguration day falls on a Sunday in 2013, Chief Justice John Roberts will officially administer the official oath of office in a private ceremony that day. The public inauguration on the Capitol Building’s West Front — at which Roberts will administer a second, symbolic oath of office — will take place the next day. In early meetings with the inaugural committee,

Sorry, everyone, but flying cars don´t appear in the "Global Trends 2030: Alternative Worlds" report that the director of national intelligence´s office made public on Monday. Instead, the National Intelligence Council paints the picture of a world in which the U.S. is no longer the unquestionably dominant global player; individuals and small groups may carry out devastating cyber or bioterror attacks; oh, and food and water may be running short in some places. The 160-page report is a great read for anyone in the business of crafting the script for the next James Bond movie

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama is pressing for public support Monday to raise taxes on the wealthiest Americans, a day after he and House Speaker John Boehner met one-on-one for the first time to discuss ways to avert the "fiscal cliff." Neither side provided details of the weekend meeting at the White House. But with just three weeks until a flurry of tax hikes and spending cuts start taking effect, the mere fact that the meeting happened was seen as progress. Negotiations continue to center on whether to raise tax rates for the top

The White House misspelled Santa Claus twice, according to a recent transcript of President Barack Obama´s remarks at the national Christmas tree lighting ceremony. From the official transcript: THE PRESIDENT: No, no, no -- (laughter) -- I just wasn’t sure. I know this program is taped so we can always edit this out. (Laughter.) Was there something else that we were supposed to be singing? Santa Clause Is Coming To Town -- that´s what I thought. Let’s hit it! (Everyone sings “Santa Clause Is Coming To Town.) END In fact, it should read, "Santa Claus."

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Monday weighed in on efforts by Republican legislators in Michigan to roll back collective-bargaining rights. Michigan´s legislature is set to vote on the legislation in about a week. The right-to-work legislation bans unions from requiring members to pay dues while also earning benefits that were negotiated between unions and employers. Critics of the legislation say it dramatically undercuts unions´ bargaining power. "This is a blatant attempt by Michigan Republicans to assault the collective bargaining process and undermine the standard of living it has helped foster,"

The authoritative Atlantic Council, whose members include key Obama advisors, is urging the president to retune his second-term agenda to "accommodate" China´s needs and dive head first into the climate change debate by pushing a tax on carbon emissions. In a weighty "companion" to the official U.S. National Intelligence Council report also issued Monday, President Obama was advised to stop fighting with China and take a more cooperative approach since both countries have emerged as the world´s remaining economic and military superpowers.

He may have won the election but President Obama hasn´t given up the campaign. Aiming to bring public pressure on Republicans to back higher taxes for the rich in the "fiscal cliff" fight, the Obama-Biden campaign today began urging supporters to join a local, online phone bank to help the president blast the GOP. In an email, supporters are directed to a "Call Tool" where they are provided with somebody to call. Included is a telemarketing-style script to read. A successful effort will then be tabulated on a "leaderboard" of callers.

Newark, N.J. Mayor Cory Booker says the federal government´s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (food stamps), which spent $80.4 billion in fiscal 2012, is “not a government handout." “I hope and understand that people are getting a better recognition that this is a program that really helps America, helps families in need," Booker said on Friday, while describing his fourth day of living on a SNAP budget. "It’s not a government handout,” he said. “If anything, it’s a safety net that helps people through difficult times and bridges them towards stability.”

Friday´s "Employment Situation" report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) showed that 5.4 million Americans have dropped out of the labor force since Barack Obama took office. The labor force declined by 350,000 in November, despite an increase of 191,000 in our working age population. The unprecedented decline of labor force participation under President Obama is not news. However, it also appears that millions of brain cells have dropped out of the mental labor force of America´s economic analysts. How else can we account for headlines like these? "Jobs report:

With American set to hit the debt ceiling again thanks to out-of-control government spending, the Washington Post has suggested a solution for President Obama: mint two platinum coins valued at $1 trillion each. What would this do? According to the Post: Thanks to an odd loophole in current law, the U.S. Treasury is technically allowed to mint as many coins made of platinum as it wants and can assign them whatever value it pleases. Under this scenario, the U.S. Mint would produce (say) a pair of trillion-dollar platinum coins.
