Dem lawmakers plead with

Congressional Democrats on Monday pleaded with Gov. Rick Snyder (R) to veto legislation that would make Michigan a right-to-work state. Senior lawmakers met with Snyder in Detroit and urged him not to sign the law on union dues, which has moved quickly through the lame-duck session of the Republican-controlled Michigan Legislature over the vocal opposition of labor leaders. Ratification would make Michigan — the stronghold of organized labor — the 24th state in the country to pass right-to-work legislation that bans required payment of union dues. Sen. Leading member of the Salafist Call in Alexandria Saeed Abdel-Azim warned on Monday of an "Islamic revolution" if Egypt´s political opposition "attempted to overthrow" the country´s elected president, Mohamed Morsi. "If secularists try to topple President Morsi or storm the presidential palace, we will not stand still," Abdel-Azim declared at a Monday conference in the coastal city of Alexandria. "We will organise a massive Islamic revolution in Egypt involving unprecedented numbers." The popular Salafist preacher also accused leaders of Egypt´s political opposition of "receiving

Since the 2012 presidential election, Republicans in Virginia and Ohio have floated the possibility of getting rid of their states´ "winner-take-all" systems of awarding electoral votes, proposing instead that they apportion their electoral votes by congressional district. In Virginia, state Senator Charles Carrico has introduced a bill that "would award one electoral vote to the winner of each of the state’s 11 congressional districts, and the state’s two at-large votes to the candidate that wins the majority of the districts." Carrico said part of the reason why he introduced the bill was because Mitt Romney won 63 percent

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday scoffed at international criticism of his plans to build settler housing on occupied land east of Jerusalem. Speaking to foreign journalists, he compared the E1 plan to build between largely Arab east Jerusalem and the West Bank settlement of Maaleh Adumin, to the accepted goal of a Palestinian state embracing the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. "I don´t understand how people say that a Palestinian state cannot exist if Maalah Adumim is connected to Jerusalem,´ he said. "These are the same people who say that you´ll have a Palestinian state

Republican lawmakers warned Monday the sale of a clean energy firm to a Chinese company could hurt national security. Wanxiang America is purchasing A123 Systems´ automotive, energy storage and commercial and government operations in a $256.6 million deal. While Wanxiang is not buying A123´s government business — which includes all military projects — GOP lawmakers said they opposed the deal because it could still hamper national security by giving the Chinese government access to U.S. secrets. “A123’s core battery technology is used in all of their business applications and allowing the sale of one

A Friday afternoon report at Politico brings news of another “historic” moment in the Obama presidency, which promised “transparency” but has transformed much of American government into a riddle, wrapped in mystery, inside an enigma: Because inauguration day falls on a Sunday in 2013, Chief Justice John Roberts will officially administer the official oath of office in a private ceremony that day. The public inauguration on the Capitol Building’s West Front — at which Roberts will administer a second, symbolic oath of office — will take place the next day. In early meetings with the inaugural committee,

Sorry, everyone, but flying cars don´t appear in the "Global Trends 2030: Alternative Worlds" report that the director of national intelligence´s office made public on Monday. Instead, the National Intelligence Council paints the picture of a world in which the U.S. is no longer the unquestionably dominant global player; individuals and small groups may carry out devastating cyber or bioterror attacks; oh, and food and water may be running short in some places. The 160-page report is a great read for anyone in the business of crafting the script for the next James Bond movie

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama is pressing for public support Monday to raise taxes on the wealthiest Americans, a day after he and House Speaker John Boehner met one-on-one for the first time to discuss ways to avert the "fiscal cliff." Neither side provided details of the weekend meeting at the White House. But with just three weeks until a flurry of tax hikes and spending cuts start taking effect, the mere fact that the meeting happened was seen as progress. Negotiations continue to center on whether to raise tax rates for the top

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Monday weighed in on efforts by Republican legislators in Michigan to roll back collective-bargaining rights. Michigan´s legislature is set to vote on the legislation in about a week. The right-to-work legislation bans unions from requiring members to pay dues while also earning benefits that were negotiated between unions and employers. Critics of the legislation say it dramatically undercuts unions´ bargaining power. "This is a blatant attempt by Michigan Republicans to assault the collective bargaining process and undermine the standard of living it has helped foster,"

The authoritative Atlantic Council, whose members include key Obama advisors, is urging the president to retune his second-term agenda to "accommodate" China´s needs and dive head first into the climate change debate by pushing a tax on carbon emissions. In a weighty "companion" to the official U.S. National Intelligence Council report also issued Monday, President Obama was advised to stop fighting with China and take a more cooperative approach since both countries have emerged as the world´s remaining economic and military superpowers.

He may have won the election but President Obama hasn´t given up the campaign. Aiming to bring public pressure on Republicans to back higher taxes for the rich in the "fiscal cliff" fight, the Obama-Biden campaign today began urging supporters to join a local, online phone bank to help the president blast the GOP. In an email, supporters are directed to a "Call Tool" where they are provided with somebody to call. Included is a telemarketing-style script to read. A successful effort will then be tabulated on a "leaderboard" of callers.

The labor force declined by 350,000 in November, despite an increase of 191,000 in our working age population. The unprecedented decline of labor force participation under President Obama is not news. With American set to hit the debt ceiling again thanks to out-of-control government spending, the Washington Post has suggested a solution for President Obama: mint two platinum coins valued at $1 trillion each. What would this do? According to the Post: Thanks to an odd loophole in current law, the U.S. Treasury is technically allowed to mint as many coins made of platinum as it wants and can assign them whatever value it pleases. Under this scenario, the U.S. Mint would produce (say) a pair of trillion-dollar platinum coins.

Lee Atwater’s claim to fame was his pioneering use of racially divisive imagery in political messages that, superficially, didn’t seem to be about race at all. The most infamous examples, of course, were Atwater ads like the “Revolving Door” and the Willie Horton spots. Under the guise of a color-blind message about criminal justice, those spots homed in on African-American criminals in a deliberate effort to stoke racial fears among whites. In employing such a formula, the ads embodied the now-standard dog-whistle tactic for racial messaging —
