Michigan Republicans touched off a firestorm Thursday with an abrupt push to pass right-to-work legislation, in what would be a blow to organized labor in the home of the U.S. auto industry. Right-to-work legislation prohibits unions from forcing workers to pay union dues. Unions and their Democratic allies adamantly oppose these laws -- but with little warning, Michigan Republicans on Thursday laid the groundwork to, in a matter of days, make their state the 24th with right-to-work legislation. "This is all about taking care of the hard-working workers in Michigan, being pro-worker and giving them freedom to make choices,"

On Dec. 7, 1941, when Japanese planes attacked Pearl Harbor, I was working as a reporter for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. After a week of war, I wrote a story directed at Hawaii’s women; I thought it would be useful for them to know what I had seen. It might help prepare them for what lay ahead. But my editors thought the graphic content would be too upsetting for readers and decided not to run my article. It appears here for the first time. For seven ghastly, confused days, we have been at war.

Hoping that the recent murder of the U.S. Ambassador to Libya won´t be forgotten, the Senate has approved a measure to add 1,000 more U.S. Marines to embassy security forces, drawing cheers from the diplomatic corps. The extra Marines would nearly double the size of the security force of 1,200 stationed in 130 countries. Susan Johnson, president of the American Foreign Service Association, said, "Increasing the Embassy Marine Security Guard program is going to benefit many of our embassies and consulates that have had to find a balance between security needs and what resources, including Marines, are available."

In an emotional speech as she nears the end of her term of office, Hillary Clinton warned there would be “many sacrifices and losses” before daughters were “valued as sons” across the world, according to reporters traveling with the secretary of state. Clinton, speaking Thursday at Dublin City University in Ireland, was given a humanitarian award by the non-governmental organization Concern Worldwide, whose chief executive Tom Arnold hailed her as “one of the greatest” secretaries of state “in the history of the Republic. MALIBU, Calif. -- A dead whale rotting near the Malibu homes of Barbra Streisand, Bob Dylan and other celebrities is causing a gigantic cleanup problem as authorities try to decide who´s responsible for getting rid of it. Los Angeles County lifeguards planned to try to pull the 40,000-pound carcass out to sea at high tide, said Cindy Reyes, executive director of the California Wildlife Center.

Barack Hussein Obama had such a good time reciting the presidential oath of office twice last time, that he´s decided to do it twice twice. What really sticks out from that cold sunny inaugural day in 2009, of course, was the size of Aretha Franklin´s hat, which needed special FAA clearance to ascend Capitol Hill. But many also remember the about-to-be president and the already-Chief Justice of the Supreme Court muffing the oath. [Snip] Well, this time the constitutionally-mandated Jan. 20 date for the old, new president to assume office falls on a Sunday.

Wind and water damage from superstorm Sandy may have blown away any chance for victims of a nationwide outbreak of fungal meningitis to prove that the Framingham building where New England Compounding Center mixed suspect spinal injections was contaminated, a company lawyer said, even as the Centers for Disease Control report bacteria and mold have been discovered in unopened, recalled vials of heart, eye and skin medicines distributed by the family-owned company. At a hearing in U.S. District Court in Boston yesterday, Magistrate Judge Jennifer C. Boal said she will allow civil lawyers and experts for more than

WASHINGTON — The U.S. economy added a solid 146,000 jobs in November and the unemployment rate fell to 7.7 percent, the lowest since December 2008. The government said Superstorm Sandy had only a minimal effect on the figures. The Labor Department report offered a mixed picture for the economy. Hiring remained steady during the storm and in the face of looming tax increases. But the government said employers added 49,000 fewer jobs in October and September than initially estimated. And the unemployment rate fell from 7.9 percent in October mostly because more people stopped looking for work and

The job outlook at America’s small businesses is the worst it’s ever been, according to new research. Last month, 21% of small business owners said they expected to lower head count over the next six months — the highest percentage recorded by the Wells Fargo/Gallup Small Business Index since its launch in 2003. In July, the last time the data was compiled, just 10% of bosses said they planned to shrink employee ranks. (Snip) Such a sour forecast suggests “the potential for a serious decline in jobs early next year,” according to Gallup, as well as capital spending reductions

n the fiscal feud between President Obama and Republican lawmakers, economists agree that Washington could raise several hundred billion dollars by limiting tax deductions and closing loopholes for the wealthy, but charities likely would take a big hit in donations. At the center of the dispute between Mr. Obama and the GOP is whether they could raise enough revenue for a deal on deficit reduction without raising tax rates on families earning more than $250,000 per year.

Illinois state senator Donne Trotter has gotten himself into a hole and can´t seem to stop digging. You see, the good senator is an advocate of harsh gun control measures, and is an important co-sponsor of Governor Pat Quinn´s latest bill banning "assault weapons" and large capacity clips. It´s a contest of wills and guess who is winning? President Obama, of course. And that´s because the president is up against the GOP´s equivalent of Churchill´s "Boneless Wonder," Speaker John Boehner. Matched against the president, Boehner is making Ned Beatty´s hapless character from the classic movie Deliverance look downright gritty. Boehner the Boneless Wonder´s beta dog routine is doing much to deep-six the Party of Lincoln. Hyperbole? Don´t grumpy grassroots conservatives grouse incessantly that establishment Republicans are screwing the -- well, putting it more politely, screwing it up

A city in the region reported that a small tsunami had hit, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage. The Japan Meteorological Agency said the earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.3 and struck in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Miyagi prefecture at 5:18 p.m local time. The epicenter was 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) beneath the seabed. After the quake, which caused buildings in Tokyo to sway

The US Secretary of State landed in Belfast as part of four-day European trip, just hours after police seized an unexploded bomb from suspected Republican dissidents. A second device was found in a postbox.[Snip] Feelings have been running high since new restrictions were imposed on flying the Union flag over Belfast City Hall. Limiting the number of days the flag can be shown has caused protests across the country. A loyalist mob set fire to offices of the centre-ground Alliance Party in Carrickfergus in County Antrim and the home of two councillors in Bangor was attacked.

BERLIN At a recent meeting of German business and foreign-policy leaders, one participant summed up an anxiety that’s almost palpable here: “Europeans have a sense of being left alone. You Americans don’t understand how much we need you.” Europeans seem relieved that Barack Obama won reelection. (One German official wrote in an informal paper that his victory was “the best thing that could have happened to the U.S.”) But Europeans remain worried that the Obama administration’s famous “pivot” toward Asia will leave them abandoned at a time of severe internal economic and political trouble.

Waste: Transparency International has named Venezuela the most corrupt nation in the hemisphere, matching Haiti and besting the likes of Paraguay and Nicaragua. With a $1 trillion oil windfall, that´s lots of graft. Venezuela´s Hugo Chavez ushered in the era of high oil prices in 1998, slashing output and earning the country a cool $1.125 trillion windfall as oil prices shot from $9 a barrel to more than $100. That´s bizarre, given that Venezuela remains a crime-ridden hellhole, whose vast slums and impoverished people offer not a scintilla of evidence of any spreading prosperity.

The bill for Obama’s first term has yet to come due. Instead, it’s increased our debt load and placed us in the unpleasant company of Portugal and Greece. Remember when Obama said that he thought the United States was exceptional

Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson just can´t seem to keep his financial house in order. Four years ago he was fined, but not sent to jail, for stealing AmeriCorps funds to pay workers to help with election activities and to wash his car, among many other abuses. Now a watchdog group has revealed that Johnson didn´t report $3.5 million in behests, within the legal time limit, from well-known foundations and corporations in connection with his arena task force and education reform initiatives.

If you want to know why Republicans and conservatives are in a political crisis, you need only consider the fact that the Right’s deeply held view now boils down to this: Taxes should not go up on the wealthy, and your health benefits should be cut. Political folk talk a lot these days about “messaging” — a neologism designed to describe the way in which parties and politicians consciously characterize their efforts. It is only intended to be positive — i.e., “our messaging is designed to show we care.” But what if

Controversy is brewing over new Common Core State Standards in English that call on public schools to emphasize the reading of “information text” instead of fictional literature. According to the Washington Post, English teachers across the country are upset by what they consider the government’s effort “to drive literature out of the classroom.” English teachers are right to be upset, but they shouldn’t take it personally. The government has nothing much against literature, per se. Rather, this initiative is driven in large part by the desire to promote political propaganda in the classroom.

One of the curious—and admirable—things about President Obama is how he has sought to correct the narrative of Vietnam. The way Vietnam veterans were blamed for the "misdeeds of a few" GIs when "the honorable service of the many should have been praised," the president said on the 50th anniversary of the start of the war, was "a national shame, a disgrace that should have never happened." So why in the world is Mr. Obama floating the name of John Kerry for secretary of either state or defense? It is hard to think of anyone who did more

The State Department has gone without an inspector general for four years, raising concerns that the Sept. 11, 2012 attack on the U.S. Embassy in Libya could have been averted or, at least, more thoroughly investigated if President Barack Obama had filled the post during his first term. The last head of the Office of the Inspector General of the Department of State was Howard Krongard, who retired in January 2008. Since Krongard’s departure, the critical role of overseeing an office charged with investigating instances of fraud, waste and mismanagement
