Washington - President Barack Obama is expected to announce his nominees for secretaries of state and defense in the next two weeks, with former Republican Senator Chuck Hagel on the short list of potential choices to head the Pentagon, senior administration officials said on Tuesday. Hagel, whose appointment would give Obama´s reshuffled second-term Cabinet a bipartisan cast, met the Democratic president at the White House this week to discuss a post on his national security team.

Iranian state television has shown images of what it says is an unmanned US drone captured in its airspace. The Revolutionary Guards said they had brought down a ScanEagle - one of the smaller, less sophisticated drones employed by the Americans. Rear Admiral Ali Fadavi told the Fars news agency that the drone had conducted several reconnaissance flights over the Gulf in recent days. But the US Navy said none of its drones was missing in the Middle East. Other nations in the region, including the United Arab Emirates, also operate ScanEagles--low-cost, long-endurance aircraft with a 10ft (3m) wingspan

Trenton — After meeting with White House officials and Congressional leaders in D.C. today, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Gov. Chris Christie will make a similar trip Thursday to push for federal funding of Hurricane Sandy disaster relief. The Associated Press reported Cuomo´s comment, but spokesman Kevin Roberts declined to confirm. While Cuomo was speaking to reporters, Christie´s office released two statements. In the first, Christie asked that the federal government reimburse 100 percent of costs related to Sandy recovery, beyond the usual 75 percent or the 90 percent President Obama can authorize. The second was a joint statement

Newark — For the second Christmas season in a row, a church in this city´s impoverished South Ward has been ravaged by the same culprit: copper thieves. The Clinton Avenue Presbyterian Church closed its popular soup kitchen and moved services from its 98-year-old Gothic sanctuary to its basement after the bandits struck in late October and early November. The modest church was stripped of nearly all of its copper in the incidents, similar to a burglary last year that led the church to cancel its Christmas and choir services. As church members consider how to proceed this holiday season,

From a young Nepalese woman with her baby tied upon her back, to a girl in a pretty frock in a wooded area surrounded by swarms of butterflies, they are photographs that show worlds apart. Some of the pictures--taken from around the globe--would not appear out of place in children´s tales such as the Secret Garden or the Chronicles of Narnia. Others show the paradoxical reality of some of the world´s most frugal people, enjoying the technological advances of the western world. Monks are pictured in a barren landscape on an iPod in Malaysia and tigers, appearing almost magical

John Adams, James Monroe, John Q. Adams, Martin Van Buren, James Buchanan. Andrew Mellon, W. Averell Harriman – these are some of the distinguished names of US Ambassadors to the Court of St. James´s over the past 250 years. And now Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue, is reportedly in the running to become the next US Ambassador to the United Kingdom, to succeed the outgoing Louis Susman. According to Bloomberg, Wintour was among “Obama’s biggest bundlers of donations in the campaign”, raising over $500,000 to re-elect the president. As Bloomberg notes, the Obama administration (like many previous US administrations)

The terrible British conceit that we are the only Anglophone nation with a sense of humour has been laid bare by the news that Anna Wintour is in the running to be America´s next ambassador to either Britain or France. Politicians of every hue, from Dave to Mr Leader, fell over themselves to offer Barack Obama their backing during his election campaign. Their support, it appears, was less important than Ms Wintour´s. The latter raised $40m for the President´s re-election effort.[Snip] Having invested a barbecue set in the Special Relationship, Mr Obama has clearly decided to cut his losses

Mona Charen shares a story from Obamasville, USA that raises the stakes in the fiscal cliff negotiations. Things are getting worse in San Bernardino.[Snip] Things are getting so bad that at a recent city council meeting, the city attorney advised residents to “lock their doors and load their guns” because the city could no longer afford to keep up a strong enough police force.Charen’s point is that when a civilization can no longer pay its bills … it dies. And the future for many Republicans, if they don’t hold the line on taxes and cut spending

A light had been flicked on in the four-bed ward and someone shouted out “anybody for breakfast?” just moments before he died., Ms Clwyd said. She painted a picture of nurses who treated her husband with “coldness, resentment, indifference and even contempt" Headline resplit by staff.

Ever since I saw the film Mean Girls, almost ten years ago, I have been waiting for Mean Gays. The instant classic starring once-innocent Lindsay Lohan, orchestrated by the pre-Palin-slayer Tina Fey, wasn´t as much about the meanness of females as about a maladjusted social world populated by people who resorted to games to overcome their own insecurities.(snip)Unfortunately, the LGBT leadership seems determined each year to make gays more and more like adolescent girls. Therein lies a tale.

The barefoot homeless man who was photographed being given a pair of winter boots by a New York City police officer on a cold November night has actually been living rent-free in an apartment since late last year, the city said Tuesday. Homeless Services Commissioner Seth Diamond had no doubt that the man captured in a tourist´s picture receiving the boots from NYPD Officer Larry DePrimo was the same Jeffrey Hillman who had been on the city agency´s radar for a while. "We´re sure because we´ve had such a sustained engagement with him for so many years," Diamond said.

On Monday´s CBS This Morning, Cheesecake Factory CEO David Overton spotlighted the looming economic impact of Obamacare´s implementation, especially on small enterprises: "For those businesses that don´t cover their employees, they´ll be in for a very expensive situation." Overton also warned that the cost of the law would be passed on to customers. Anchor Norah O´Donnell raised the issue of the still-controversial health care law: "One of the things that´s going to change, of course, in the new year is ObamaCare, or the Affordable Care Act. How do you implement that at Cheesecake Factory, and how will you pay

If you ask Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey about political messages behind the The Who´s music, they´ll be quick to tell you the band steered clear of mixing politics and music. But when these rock legends sat down with ABC´s Jonathan Karl to talk about their work for teens with cancer, they didn´t shy away from talking about both politics and music. Townshend, who described himself "a bit of a neocon" politically, said he was surprised that Mitt Romney lost the election to President Obama. CAIRO – Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi fled the presidential palace Tuesday as violence erupted between police and at least 100,000 protesters gathered in Cairo. In a brief outburst, police fired tear gas to stop protesters approaching the palace in the capital´s Heliopolis district. Morsi was in the palace conducting business as usual while the protesters gathered outside. But he left for home through a back door when the crowds "grew bigger," according to a presidential official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

By kindergarten, 1 out of 4 African American boys in California is convinced he will fail in school, a self-fulfilling prophecy driven in part by poverty and trauma, according to the results of a legislative inquiry. The Assembly select committee investigation on the status of boys and men of color also found that the boys are increasingly putting a strain on the state´s economic health. The findings were drawn from several community hearings, expert testimony and the input of hundreds of other stakeholders over 18 months. The final report, scheduled for public release this week, identified education, health and employment

California officials need to add up the costs of all the state´s clean-energy policies before adopting any more, according to a report issued Monday by a government oversight agency. The state has adopted a series of far-reaching energy reforms - boosting the use of renewable power and reining in greenhouse gases - without considering how each policy affects the others, the Little Hoover Commission argues in the report. Even worse, state officials have no clear idea how much all of those reforms, taken together, will cost. Californians could soon face a "rate impact bomb" of exploding electricity prices as a result

Egypt´s presidential palace was encircled by anti-Muslim Brotherhood protesters in a violent demonstration in Cairo, as the constitutional crisis caused by Mohammed Morsi´s assumption of unchallengeable powers showed no sign of abating. Mr Morsi was forced to leave the palace through a back door as up to 100,000 people moved in to surround it on all sides. Some stones were thrown, one hitting the rear car in the president’s convoy. Ignoring volleys of tear gas, the protesters burst through first one then a second line of police set in the way to reach the palace

A United Airlines flight en route to Newark from Houston Tuesday morning was forced to make an emergency landing in New Orleans because of a mechanical issue with the plane, a brand-new 787 Dreamliner. United, which received its first Dreamliner from Boeing in September, confirmed the diversion of Flight 1146 to New Orleans and said in a statement that it "will work with Boeing to review the diversion and determine the cause." The 219-seat Dreamliner was carrying 174 passengers and 10 crew members, the carrier said.

My cousin Aaron abruptly typed me the news while we were texting back and forth about other matters: a Kansas City Chiefs football player killed his girlfriend, then went to the team´s practice facility and committed suicide in front of his head coach and general manager. Left behind was the couple´s 3-month-old daughter, who was in another room when her mother was shot multiple times. Like so many Americans, we were stunned. We would learn later that player was Jovan Belcher, 25-year-old starting linebacker for the Chiefs, a man and an athlete spoken of in the highest

If the recent election taught us anything, it´s that Barack Obama certainly knows how to campaign. While to many of us his speeches were full of seemingly small-bore issues like Sesame Street and contraceptives, these turned out to be perfectly calibrated to appeal to low-information voters. He is continuing this successful approach with the negotiations over the "fiscal cliff." He´s even cut a campaign-style ad making his case for tax hikes. Two things about the video below are noteworthy. First, Obama is framing his position as a tax cut for middle class families. He claims
