Washington - President Barack Obama is expected to announce his nominees for secretaries of state and defense in the next two weeks, with former Republican Senator Chuck Hagel on the short list of potential choices to head the Pentagon, senior administration officials said on Tuesday. Iranian state television has shown images of what it says is an unmanned US drone captured in its airspace. The Revolutionary Guards said they had brought down a ScanEagle - one of the smaller, less sophisticated drones employed by the Americans. Trenton — After meeting with White House officials and Congressional leaders in D.C. today, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Gov. Chris Christie will make a similar trip Thursday to push for federal funding of Hurricane Sandy disaster relief. The Associated Press reported Cuomo´s comment, but spokesman Kevin Roberts declined to confirm. While Cuomo was speaking to reporters, Christie´s office released two statements. In the first, Christie asked that the federal government reimburse 100 percent of costs related to Sandy recovery, beyond the usual 75 percent or the 90 percent President Obama can authorize. The barefoot homeless man who was photographed being given a pair of winter boots by a New York City police officer on a cold November night has actually been living rent-free in an apartment since late last year, the city said Tuesday. CAIRO – Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi fled the presidential palace Tuesday as violence erupted between police and at least 100,000 protesters gathered in Cairo. In a brief outburst, police fired tear gas to stop protesters approaching the palace in the capital´s Heliopolis district. Morsi was in the palace conducting business as usual while the protesters gathered outside. But he left for home through a back door when the crowds "grew bigger," according to a presidential official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

A United Airlines flight en route to Newark from Houston Tuesday morning was forced to make an emergency landing in New Orleans because of a mechanical issue with the plane, a brand-new 787 Dreamliner. United, which received its first Dreamliner from Boeing in September, confirmed the diversion of Flight 1146 to New Orleans and said in a statement that it "will work with Boeing to review the diversion and determine the cause." The 219-seat Dreamliner was carrying 174 passengers and 10 crew members, the carrier said.
