A group of House Democrats has formed its own “Gang of Six” to push for progressive tax reform — in which the expiration of the Bush-era tax rates for the wealthiest Americans is “just the beginning.” “In response to the call for progressives to draw a red line in the fiscal cliff sand, here is our big picture stance on corporate and individual tax reform,” Rep. Michael Honda (D-Calif.) said in a statement. “Six progressive tax principles from a new Gang of Six. The expiration of the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest

Fort Lee, N.J. — Motorists will pay more as the next phase of toll increases kick in at Port Authority bridges and tunnels on Sunday. Cash tolls on the George Washington Bridge, Holland Tunnel, Lincoln Tunnel, Goethals Bridge, Bayonne Bridge and Outerbridge Crossing will increase $1 to $13. Tolls for E-ZPass users will go from $9.50 to $10.25 during peak commuting hours and from $7.50 to $8.25 during off-peak hours. The Port Authority last raised tolls in September 2011. I have a bowlful of coins sitting on my bedside table. I do not have a bowlful of dollar bills sitting on my bedside table. Obviously. Weirdly, this profoundly boring fact is significant. It is the reason — the only reason — that getting rid of the one-dollar bill and forcing everybody to use dollar coins would provide a financial benefit to the federal government. Here´s why. It costs less than $1 to create a dollar coin or a dollar bill. As a result, the government makes a profit when it puts coins and bills into circulation.

Despite her denials, it’s widely speculated that Hillary Clinton may run for president in 2016, and if she does, she´ll need as many email addresses as possible to send out fund-raising solicitations and spread her political message. Therefore it may be noteworthy that Chelsea Clinton is suddenly helping the family´s Clinton Foundation collect email addresses. In a "Dear Friend" message sent Thursday to people on Democratic lists, Chelsea says she´s gathering "thank-you" notes for “my dad,” Bill Clinton. Chelsea says her father "deserves a big ´thank you´ for everything he´s done in the past year -- especially the

Dozens of union airport workers were holding a prayer vigil outside Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s house on Thursday, asking him to reconsider a decision to hand custodial work at O’Hare International Airport to a new company that doesn’t use union labor. CBS 2’s Dana Kozlov reports the O’hare janitors and window washers will lose their jobs in just over two weeks, when a new contractor takes over custodial work at the airport. The workers wanted to send a message to the mayor, on his birthday: Walk a day in our shoes.

The United States will seek to block an “alarming” Russian proposal to give a United Nations telecommunications group control over the Internet, a senior State Department official said on Thursday. “We will actively oppose the Russian proposal,” Terry Kramer, head of the U.S. delegation to a U.N. conference in Dubai, told reporters. “I have to say, out of all the proposals that have come in, the Russian one candidly is the most shocking and most disappointing in terms of achieving the success that we are seeking globally,” he said. What can I do with that?” Borough President James Molinaro almost accidentally riffed the old Reagan line about the most terrifying words in the English language during Thursday night’s meeting: “We’re from the government, and we’re here to help.” “We are friends, we’re here to help,” he said. “There’s a lot of confusion. White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said today that no matter what else happens President Barack Obama--who is the only modern president other than Franklin Roosevelt to serve in four years when federal spending topped 24 percent of GDP--will not sign a deal to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff that will arrive at the end of this year unless that deal increases taxes. "So the President made clear that he is not wedded to every detail of his plan," said Carney. "The President has also made categorically and abundantly clear that he will not sign an extension of the

The French politician who said Indian steel company ArcelorMittal should leave the country has told CNBC that his government is only acting like U.S. President Barack Obama. Industry Minister Arnaud Montebourg, a member of the governing Socialist party, caused controversy last week when he said that the Indian company, which employs close to 20,000 people in France, should leave after it said it would have to close down a factory. The French government announced on Thursday that it could nationalize the factory in question, with backing from an unnamed businessman.

One of the main consequences of President Obama’s reelection is that his national health care law will be implemented. Though there are various measures that Republicans can take to gum up the works in the coming years and though there will be a number of logistical hurdles facing the administration, the reality is that any future Republican proposals for reforming the health care system will have to wrestle with the existing Obamacare framework. Even if premiums spike, wait times at doctors’ offices swell, exchanges are a mess and some people lose coverage they like as a

Our noses were practically touching the wall. Tall, white, and seamless, it was the only thing standing between us and the president of the United States. “Stay right there,” a White House aide told me, my wife, and three children. “The president will be with you in a minute.” Suddenly, the wall opened; it was a hidden door to the Oval Office. “Come on in, Fournier!” shouted George W. Bush. “Who ya’ dragging in?” It was my last day covering the White House for the Associated Press, and this 2003 visit was a courtesy that presidents traditionally afford departing correspondents.

President Barack Obama has dramatically upped his demands in the fiscal crisis negotiations: He wants Congress to levy twice as much in extra taxes from Americans as he urged during the election campaign, give up its control over the nation’s debt limit, and fund an immediate $50 billion stimulus for his political priorities. In exchange, Obama offered to consider — but not necessarily accept — GOP proposals for cutting $400 billion from Medicare and other programs strongly favored by off-year voters. That listening session would take place sometime in 2013, giving the president plenty of time

Rick Santelli got fired up this morning while he and and guest Steve Liesman were discussing the fiscal cliff. Santelli grew increasingly frustrated… eventually throwing his papers and walking off camera. “Why does he need to pump up his base and go on the road?” Santelli argued, referring to the president’s fiscal cliff campaigning. “He won!” Liesman argued that he has the ability to “extract” something from the base, that he “doesn’t owe them anything.” What should matter to the president, he said, “is his economic legacy.” “You want to get rid of the fiscal cliff uncertainty,” Liesman said.

In January 2008, at a John McCain rally in Columbia, S.C., I asked a number of local politicos to look back to the brutal 2000 Republican primary in their state, the one between McCain and George W. Bush. They had all supported Bush back then, and I asked whether, given the inconclusive wars, runaway federal spending and economic catastrophe of the next eight years, they felt they made the right choice. The answer was yes. They explained that they had strongly supported Ronald Reagan, and then they supported George H.W. Bush because

President Obama is still playing Sir Walter Raleigh, standing between himself and Susan E. Rice, the ambassador to the United Nations and the designated scapegoat in the Benghazi cover-up. “Susan Rice is extraordinary,” the president told his Cabinet as he convened its first session since he was re-elected. “Couldn’t be prouder of the job she’s done.” Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, no doubt grateful that she had not been elected to scapegoathood, led the round of applause for Mrs. Rice.

U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice is under fire for going on several Sunday talk shows five days after the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi and providing apparently erroneous information to the public. But President Obama’s own public statements about Benghazi, made in three separate nationally televised interviews in the days after Rice’s appearances, were equally misleading and have received scarcely any attention. In defending Rice from criticism from an array of Republicans, including Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham, Obama said at a November 15 press conference,
