President Obama´s second inaugural ceremony will be focused around the theme of "Faith in America´s Future," congressional organizers announced Thursday. The inaugural program will pay tribute to the nation´s "perseverance and unity," the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies said in a press release. And the ceremony will mark the 150th anniversary of the completion of the Capitol Dome in 1863. Construction on the dome was threatened during the American Civil War, but work continued despite a budget strained by the costs of the war.

Ahhhhhhh the good life. As lovingly recorded by the New York Times. Here´s the Lord of His Manor…. "A baseball cap perched on his head, his eyes sheathed in sunglasses" as he "sipped a Diet Coke and gazed across Lake Tahoe to California… in this most calming of places -- the glassine lake ringed by snow-dusted mountains, the late-morning quiet.… riding around the lake in his S.U.V., wandering a pristine beach, puttering around his office, and enjoying a long wine-soaked dinner as the sun set over the lake." And when this gentleman of leisure is at hard at work?

And the day just keeps going downhill for Lindsay Lohan. California prosecutors filed charges this afternoon against the troubled starlet for allegedly lying this summer to police, authorities said. The criminal complaint, by the Santa Monica City Attorney’s Office, was filed hours after she was busted in New York following a nightclub brouhaha. Lohan, 26, was wearing handcuffs early this morning after getting into a fight at club Avenue in Manhattan, law enforcement sources said.

Jay, I hate to be a pedant, but, re Ira Gershwin’s favorite joke, the chorus girl (auditioning in London) actually sang, as Ira told it, “You say eyether and I say eyether”, not “You say eether and I say eether”. So there. I thought of that joke the other day when readers emailed me about Matt Lauer, at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, introducing “‘SWonderful”, the Gershwin song of romantic elision, as “Ess Wonderful“. Ira always hated singers who sang “It’s wonderful, it’s marvelous”, which he felt defeated the point of the number.

For many years, I went back and forth on the issue of “a historian,” “an historian.” There are people who feel very, very strongly about this. Some consider “an historian” a complete abomination. “You wouldn’t say ‘an house,’ huh, huh?” There came a time when I stopped going back and forth. The truth is, both ways are used, legitimate, and correct. You go by ear. That answer is unsatisfying to many — but it’s right, I believe. Most of the time, probably, I say “an historian,” and therefore write it. I would never say “an history of Greece.”

Palestinians certain to

United Nations - The Palestinians are certain to win U.N. recognition as a state Thursday but success could exact a high price: Israel and the United States warn it could delay hopes of achieving an independent Palestinian state through peace talks with Israel. The United States, Israel´s closest ally, mounted an aggressive campaign to head off the General Assembly vote. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defiantly declared Thursday that the Palestinians would have to back down from long-held positions if they ever hope to gain independence. In a last-ditch move Wednesday,

GOMA, Democratic Republic of the Congo — Televised comments made by Amb. Susan Rice shortly after the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi have dominated the debate over her probable nomination for secretary of state. This is a bit surprising, since it´s clear that she played only a marginal role in the affair and appears to have just been reading from the briefing notes provided. It´s also unfortunate that the "scandal" has crowded out a healthy discussion of her two-decade record as U.S. diplomat and policymaker prior to Sept. 2012 --

We’re going over the cliff

“I believe the probability is we’re going over the cliff and I think that would be horrible,” President Clinton’s Chief of Staff Erskine Bowles said at a Christian Science Monitor breakfast meeting yesterday. “It would be insane to breach this fiscal cliff, yet I think there is only a one-third possibility we’ll actually get something done before December 31.” As gloomy as Bowles prediction sounds, it is, if anything, optimistic, if the latest reporting from Politico on the state of the negotiations between Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and President Obama is to be believed.

Sick children are being discharged from NHS hospitals to die at home or in hospices on controversial ‘death pathways’. Until now, end of life regime the Liverpool Care Pathway was thought to have involved only elderly and terminally-ill adults. But the Mail can reveal the practice of withdrawing food and fluid by tube is being used on young patients as well as severely disabled newborn babies. One doctor has admitted starving and dehydrating ten babies to death in the neonatal unit of one hospital alone. Writing in a leading medical journal, the physician revealed the process can take

Governor Mick Huckabee, now a TV and radio talk-show host, seems to be a nice guy. He is kind to everyone and seemingly wants everyone to like him. Unlike other media hosts, he regularly features as guests those with whom conservatives disagree. When The Iron Lady came out in 2011, Huckabee invited on actress Meryl Streep to discuss her performance of Margaret Thatcher. I recall her nervousness as she clearly feared being the guest of a well-known social conservative with whom she had profound disagreements. The governor quickly put her at ease,

White House press secretary Jay Carney dodged questions about Ambassador Susan Rice and her husband’s investment in Canadian oil companies–including up to $600,000 in the company behind the Keystone XL pipeline, TransCanada–in a Thursday press briefing, oddly turning to the Benghazi issue in his response. “I would commend Republican opposition researchers for the intellectual bandwidth that is required to read a financial disclosure form,” Carney said of the issue, “because this was all documented in a financial disclosure form.” OnEarth, an environmental publication, first highlighted Rice’s investments Wednesday. In Washington there are two kinds of government expenditures. Those that are too small to sweat and those that are too large to do anything about. An example of something too large would be Medicare. In the too small category, there is Amtrak, which gets a billion or so in subsidies every year. In Washington, that is chump change. Not worth the trouble it would take to pry it from the clenched fingers of those who receive it. Still, some Republicans in Congress are making the effort.

Concorde crash: Continental
Airlines killings verdict quashed

A French appeals court has cleared US airline Continental of criminal blame for the July 2000 crash of a Concorde jet shortly after take-off from Paris. The ruling comes two years after another French court fined the airline and held it criminally responsible for the crash in which 113 people died. But Continental may still be liable for damages after the court said the firm still bore civil responsibility. A piece of metal from a Continental jet was blamed for causing the crash. But Continental labelled the initial court decision and its explanation absurd, and launched an appeal.

Appearing on CNN’s Early Start Thursday morning, Pastor Rick Warren told host John Berman that churches are “probably” responsible for some of the negative attitudes towards gays in America. Warren was on CNN to promote the latest version of his book, “A Purpose Driven Life,” a devotional Christian book. Warren took the opportunity to again underscore his opposition to same-sex couples, after appearing on Piers Morgan Tonight Tuesday and comparing being gay to taking arsenic and punching someone in the nose. Berman then asked Warren about the suicide of Rutgers student Tyler Clementi.

The odds of Susan Rice getting the nomination to replace Hillary Clinton may have just gotten longer, perhaps even longer than the proposed length of the Keystone XL pipeline project. That’s not an accidental analogy either, as the embattled UN Ambassador’s finances have begun attracting some interest. Rice’s wealth includes a substantial investment in TransCanada, the firm that wants to build the pipeline — and the next Secretary of State will make the official decision on whether it proceeds: Susan Rice, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations whose name has been

Where’s the love? For the Chevrolet Volt it’s right at home. The plug-in hybrid topped the Consumer Reports annual customer satisfaction survey for the second straight year, with 92 percent of owners saying they would definitely buy it again, down from 93 percent in 2011. The magazine says the showing was the result of a growing trend of enthusiasm for fuel-efficient cars, and in the case of the Volt, “the combination of sporty handling and strong engine performance also goes a long way in building loyalty and generating excitement among owners."

The GOP has a golden opportunity, if has the wit to grasp it. Mitt Romney was correct in bemoaning the reality that we have 47% of the population receiving a subsidy from the federal government, but he chose the wrong focus. Instead of framing the recipients as the problem (and be accused of insensitivity or worse), we must focus on the people who work themselves hard in order to make ends meet

Gohmert told Gaffney that anti-Muslim investigations are necessary because President Barack Obama made “horrendous decisions” in backing the “revolutions in Northern Africa and across the Middle East and to the Far East.” He chalked such decisions up to the administration listening closely to the advice of Muslim Brotherhood members.
