Analysis: Hispanic Vote Not

Exit polls from the 2012 election show that Mitt Romney would have lost Wisconsin, Iowa, and New Hampshire even if he had received 100% of the Hispanic vote in those states. This undercuts the notion that Republicans will not win national elections unless they moderate their stances on issues like amnesty and the DREAM Act to court more Hispanics. Hispanics still do not make up a significant number of voters in some of the country´s most important swing states, so so long as the electoral college is in place, discussions about how the "Hispanic vote" will swing

New York - Not all manslaughter charges are created equal. If they were, the U.S. Justice Department might have filed just 11 charges when it brought a criminal case against two BP Plc employees last week, one for each of the 11 deaths in the Deepwater Horizon disaster. (Snip) The seaman´s manslaughter statute was first passed by Congress in 1838 after a string of deadly steamboat accidents. The law, which has been modified multiple times since then, was intended to hold captains, engineers and pilots responsible for deaths attributable to their conduct. The idea behind the law was that those

Beirut - Syria on Friday condemned Turkey´s request for NATO to deploy Patriot defense missiles near their common border, calling it "provocative", after a spate of clashes there that has raised fear of the Syrian civil war embroiling the wider region. (Snip) Turkey´s missile request may have riled Damascus and its allies - notably Russia and Iran - because it could be seen as a first step toward implementing a no-fly zone. Syrian rebels have been requesting a no-fly zone to help them hold territory against a government with overwhelming firepower from the air, but most foreign governments

Mexico City - Mexican federal police have captured suspected murderer, rapist and drug gang member Joe Luis Saenz, one of the 10 most wanted fugitives on the FBI´s list, the government said on Friday. Saenz, a U.S. citizen, was arrested in the city of Guadalajara in western Mexico on Thursday following an investigation carried out by the federal police in conjunction with the FBI, the government said in a statement. According to the FBI, Saenz is suspected of shooting and killing two rival gang members in Los Angeles in July 1998. For the FBI's most wanted list, see: www.fbi.gov/wanted/topten

Havana - Colombia´s main rebel group is appealing to U.S. President Barack Obama to free a guerrilla leader serving a long prison term in the United States. The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia says Simon Trinidad´s presence at the current peace talks with the Colombia government in the Cuban capital of Havana would be an "immense" help to negotiations. The FARC rebels named Trinidad to their negotiating team in September, even though he is serving a 60-year prison term. Last week, the rebels brought a life-sized cardboard cutout of Trinidad to a negotiating session.

According to reports from Egypt, the Constitutional Court is seeking to impeach new Muslim Brotherhood president Mohammed Morsi after Morsi seized quasi-dictatorial power, sparking protests around the country. Morsi waited for the Obama administration’s praise over the Israel-Hamas ceasefire to make the move. Local media reports a courts spokesperson stating, “the judges are prepared to exercise the right to shift the head of state after he flouted the laws and the constitution.” The problem is that there is no operating constitution in Egypt; the constitution was suspended in March

Wal-Mart: Only 50 employees

Wal-Mart claimed today that the much-hyped Black Friday protests at the non-union retail giant fizzled out, with only 50 associates – their term for employees – taking part. The United Food and Commercial Workers union, which organized the protests, disputed that figure though. It said “hundreds and hundreds” joined in at events across the country. The Washington Examiner could not find an independent estimate for the protests. Even assuming the UFCW figure is correct, that is pretty small given that Wal-Mart is the nation’s largest employer, with 1.4 million people working at its stores.

Benghazi-Gate Enters New Phase:

It now looks as though the White House´s excuse for the pre-election Libya cover-up is itself a cover up. Last week we were told by the Administration (and the compliant media) that during her now-infamous round robin of five Sunday news shows, U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice was only telling us what she was told by the intelligence community. We were also told that references to al-Qaeda were edited out of the talking points in order to avoid tipping off the attackers that we were on to them. According to a number of CBS News´ sources, this simply isn´t true. As recently as yesterday, though,

When I first saw the headline, "The GOP’s bizarre attack on Susan Rice," I assumed the link would take me to one of the many left-wing columnists employed by the Post. Nope. This is a full-blown Washington Post editorial (and a despicable piece of McCarthyist race-baiting) -- the kind you would never expect from the same outlet that so doggedly pursued the Nixon administration´s Watergate cover up: Drawn up by Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-S.C.), the letter [from 97 House Republicans challenging any potential nomination of Susan Rice to Secretary of State] alleges that “Ambassador Rice is widely viewed

Thirty-eight Senators and 219 House members have signed Grover Norquist’s famed anti-tax "Taxpayer Protection Pledge," which has been instrumental in preventing politicians from increasing taxes. But after Sen. Chambliss said he cared “more about my country than I do about a 20-year-old pledge,” and he indicated he was open to

VENICE, Italy—At 90, with no children and no designated heir, legendary French fashion designer Pierre Cardin wants to plow his entire fortune into one last pet project: planting an 840-foot tower across the lagoon from the historical center of the City of Canals. Mr. Cardin says nothing else thrills him as much as the €1.5 billion ($1.93 billion) construction plan—a building that would both outlive him and eclipse Venice´s main bell tower as the lagoon´s beacon. Born near Venice, Mr. Cardin moved to a provincial French city with his parents when he was two. He made his way to Paris,

Black voters look to

WASHINGTON — When black voters gave President Barack Obama 93 percent support on Election Day in defiance of predictions that they might sit it out this year, black leaders breathed a collective sigh of relief. That encouraged those leaders to try to leverage more attention from both Obama and Congress. Although they waver over how much to demand from the president — particularly in light of defeated GOP challenger Mitt Romney´s assertion that Obama gave "gifts" to minorities in exchange for their votes — they are delivering postelection wish lists to the president anyway.

One of the funnier story lines of the 2012 presidential campaign was Barack Obama’s decision—or rather, campaign manager Jim Messina’s decision—to inaugurate a fashion line that the campaign sold on its website. This included everything from Thakoon Panichgul silk scarves ($95) to Tory Burch handbags ($75) to Monique Pean hemp-and-cotton scarves ($95) to yoga pants. The unusual idea came from Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour and was roundly mocked by everyone from Fox News (NWS) and the RNC to (more gently) Bloomberg Businessweek, whose crack art staff designed a June magazine cover done up to look like one of those cheapie free-shoppers

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California environmental leaders this week hailed the state´s first auction of carbon emissions credits a huge success. But budget writers are hardly thrilled. A low price for credits and minimal demand for future offsets suggest California will see a mere fraction of the $1 billion that Gov. Jerry Brown and lawmakers estimated the state would receive this fiscal year. If demand remains similar in two forthcoming auctions, the state would generate only about $140 million, the nonpartisan Legislative Analyst´s Office estimated Wednesday. That would strain the $91 billion state budget

Yesterday, in commenting on President Obama’s apparent conclusion that the Muslim Brotherhood represents the wave of the future in the Middle East, I noted the unimpressive nature of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi’s electoral victory. But it is not popularity that makes Morsi and the Brotherhood look like the wave of the future. Rather, it is their will to power — the same sort of will that made Hitler and Stalin look like the wave of the future to Obama’s predecessors in Hegelian thinking. Now comes word that Morsi, in the words of the Washington Post, has taken “extensive new powers

After his party’s devastating setback in the 2010 midterm elections, Barack Obama was reelected earlier this month by painting his Republican opponents as heartless in favoring lower taxes for the rich. They were portrayed as nativists for opposing the DREAM Act amnesty for illegal immigrants, and as callous in battling the federal takeover of health care. Republicans countered with arguments that higher taxes on the employer class hurt the economy in general. They assumed most voters knew that amnesties are euphemisms for undermining federal law and in the past have had the effect of promoting more illegal immigration.

There are already 8 million Americans working part time who want to work full time. It seems likely that number will skyrocket once Obamacare is implemented. An Obamacare supporter is as stupid as the Democrats who passed the legislation in the first place: When my better half told me that her boss was thinking about cutting all full-time employees to part time in order to avoid the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act insurance requirements (for full-time employees), my initial response was, "Surely the federal government wouldn´t have allowed such a blatantly obvious way of getting out of the requirement."

Critics say Morsi, who already holds both executive and legislative powers, is setting himself up as a new dictator.
