The White House was quick to credit President Obama for brokering the cease-fire deal between Israel, Egypt and in turn, Hamas. In the official statement released by the White House Wednesday, it said "The President commended the Prime Minister [of Israel] for agreeing to the Egyptian cease-fire proposal -- which the President recommended the Prime Minister do." (Snip) In fact, Hamas spokesmen had leaked to the press that the cease-fire would begin at 9 p.m. local time on Tuesday, but that was before Clinton had landed in Jerusalem. It would take another 24 hours for the deal to be finalized.

It was published on Wednesday in the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.About 18% of all pregnancies in the United States end in abortion, the CDC noted. Factors from the availability of abortion providers, state laws, the general economy and access to health services including contraception, can all influence the abortion rate,

Republicans attack Rice, not race

Republicans shot down Democratic charges that ongoing criticism of U.N. Ambassador Susan E. Rice is couched in racism or sexism, and pressed President Obama for more answers on the Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi, Libya, as partisan battle lines hardened Wednesday over the incident and its aftermath. Some Democrats have hinted that the intense criticism of Mrs. Rice has to do with her race and her gender, but Sen. Lindsey Graham dismissed that argument. “The only color I’m worried about when it comes to Benghazi is red — blood red — the death of four Americans,”

Charlie Brown’s Christmas is on the outs at an elementary school in Little Rock, Ark. — at least among atheists who are calling foul over a planned student trip to see a stage production of the beloved Peanuts story. The trouble began when students at Terry Elementary School brought home letters detailing the trip to see “A Charlie Brown Christmas” at a local church, according to a report from Arkansas’ KARK. A parent who had a problem with the play’s content notified the local atheist group of the field trip. (Snip) “The problem is that it’s got religious content

A federal judge in Manhattan ruled Wednesday that United Airlines was not responsible for the collapse of a third World Trade Center building on Sept. 11, 2001. The plaintiff in the case, Larry Silverstein, the leaseholder of the World Trade Center property, claimed that the collapse of 7 World Trade Center stemmed from airport security lapses that allowed hijackers to crash an American Airlines plane into the complex. Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein granted a request by United and its parent, United Continental Holdings, to dismiss Mr. Silverstein’s claims. Tower 7 collapsed several hours after being pierced by

Members of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) protested at entrances to the Los Angeles International Airport on Wednesday — the biggest travel day of the year — delaying people trying to spend time with their families and leading to a dozen arrests. Union members blocked a busy intersection after their permit had expired, The Los Angeles Times reported, leading to their arrests. “At least two of those arrested are City Council candidates,” the Times added in a separate report, listing Ana Grande and Ana Cubas of the 13th and 9th districts, respectively. Mideast: Celebration within Gaza after the bombing of a bus filled with innocent Israeli civilians is an object lesson on the so-called Palestine question. Those who would celebrate such a cowardly act are savages. No one can imagine Washington´s troops firing shots to celebrate a supporter of American independence trying to kill a group of Royalist civilians. During the Cold War, U.S. support for Lech Walesa´s Solidarity would have dried up if he handed out candy after a Polish nationalist targeted, say, innocent Muscovites going to work. We may live in a complex world, but evil is identifiable even

Big Labor: Is the United States becoming another France, with daily strikes not a bug but a feature? Sure looks like it, with a surge of union actions in the wake of Obama´s re-election. Guess who pays? On Wednesday, the busiest travel day of the year, 1,000 Service Employees International Union airport workers opted to strike at Los Angeles International Airport, forcing two-hour delays. In Portland, Ore., another 1,000 port guards belonging to the International Longshore and Warehouse Union shut down the Port of Portland, driving time-sensitive Christmas season cargo to other ports.

The routine use of mammograms has led to more than 1 million women being unnecessarily treated for breast cancer over the past three decades, according to the latest scientific report to cast skepticism on the effectiveness of the test. The study, published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine, concluded that nearly one-third of women diagnosed with breast cancer would never have developed the full-blown disease if left untreated. Nevertheless, in such cases patients typically undergo invasive procedures such as surgery, radiation therapy,

WASHINGTON— Ah, Thanksgiving. A little turkey, some cranberry mold, maybe apple pie with ice cream, some football on TV. Getting together with the cousins. Catching up beside the fire. Togetherness. On second thought: Scratch that. What were we thinking? This was an election year. “The Thanksgiving table will be a battleground,” says Andrew Marshall, 34, of Quincy, Mass. Like many extended families across the country, Marshall’s includes Democrats and Republicans, conservatives, liberals and independents. Just two weeks ago, liberals rejoiced over their strongest election showing in decades — re-electing Barack Obama, picking up seats in Congress and scoring historic state ballot victories that legalized same-sex marriage and recreational marijuana. But now much of the political left is worried that what seems like a liberal “morning in America” could turn out to be a false dawn. The focus of their distress is none other than Obama, who many left-leaning Democrats fear will go too far in reaching an accord with Republicans on the “fiscal cliff.” Liberal groups are gearing up media campaigns aimed at pressuring

According to Michael D. Tanner of the CATO Institute, America isn’t just headed for a fiscal cliff – we flew off it long ago like Thelma and Louise thanks to our out-of-control spending habit. Tanner writes: “federal spending is set to rise to 46 percent of GDP by 2050. When you add in state and local spending, government at all levels will be consuming more than 60 percent of everything produced in this country. We cannot long remain economically productive or personally free with a government of that size.” That vast spending increase makes every “fiscally responsible” suggestion by President
