Brand-new express lanes on the Capital Beltway in Northern Virginia -- praised by Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood as a "model for American infrastructure" -- opened with a bang on Saturday: multiple collisions involving multiple vehicles. On Monday, the first rush-hour test of I-495´s high occupancy/toll (HOT) lanes, police were investigating a four-car collision at the start of the morning rush. "The cause of the crash has not been determined but Virginia State Police are urging drivers to be careful and not back up if they mistakenly enter the Express Lanes," the Washington Post reported. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said Friday that Congress should stop placing legal limits on the amount of money the government can borrow and effectively lift the debt limit to infinity. On Bloomberg TV, “Political Capital” host Al Hunt asked Geithner if he believes “we ought to just eliminate the debt ceiling.” “Oh, absolutely,” Geithner said. “You do? Will you propose that?” Hunt asked. “Well, this is something only Congress can solve,” Geithner said. “Congress put it on itself. We´ve had 100 years of experience with it, and I think only once--last summer--did people decide

President Obama visited a 2,000 year old Buddhist pagoda in Burma, where he put his own spin on a traditional ritual of bathing a Buddha statue. The Shwedagon pagoda contains individual buddhas that “correspond to the day you were born,” the pool report explains. Obama approached a Friday Buddha for the bathing ritual, but he didn’t pour as much water over the statue as he might have. “I’m going to do it 11 times,” Obama told reporters, rather than the 52 that tradition would have seemed to require. Per pool: The spokeswoman said that

Funny how quickly some principles collapse when given the right kind of shove. One day, the Republican Party is rock-ribbed restrictionist, dedicated to the proposition that unauthorized immigrants are an invading army of job stealers, welfare moochers and criminals whose only acceptable destiny is to be caught and deported — the border fence forever, “amnesty” never. The next day: never mind. The party suddenly discovers the merits of a working immigration system. Senators like John McCain and Lindsey Graham, who once bravely supported bipartisan reform but slunk away late in the last Bush

Seeking to reassure victims of Hurricane Sandy following a tour of the damaged boardwalk in Seaside Heights, N.J., Vice President Joe Biden told residents Sunday that he spent a lot of time on the New Jersey shore while growing up and that they’ve got a “homeboy” in the White House who “gets it.” Here are Biden’s remarks, from the pool report: “If you’re not an Easterner it’s hard to understand that the ocean to us is the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone Park and everything else combined. It is a gigantic part of not only our economy but who we are.

During a lengthy speech at the University of Yangon in Burma, President Obama signaled the important traits of American democracy, particularly his limited powers as president. “As President, I cannot just impose my will on Congress — the Congress of the United States — even though sometimes I wish I could,” he stated. “The legislative branch has its own powers and its own prerogatives, and so they check my power and balance my power.” Obama also mentioned his responsibilities as Commander-In-Chief of the United States Military were limited by civilians.

(Snip) “I turned to him, I said, “Barack, now that this election’s over, I’m going to Ireland,” Biden told the patrons of Benny Tudino’s Pizzeria, per the pool report. “You know what he said to me? He said, ‘would you take me with you? I want to play golf.’ I said, ‘I’m not so sure. But I’m going. I’m going to see where my mother is from and my mother’s father and my mother’s mother.’”

Hate preacher Abu Qatada issued orders to kill British and American civilians after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, according to a secret MI5 report seen by The Mail on Sunday. The Security Service document has raised questions as to why Qatada – who the British Government has tried and failed to deport to Jordan – has not been put on trial in the UK for inciting murder. The report is marked ‘secret UK eyes only’ and claims Qatada is the author of a fatwa that ‘encourages Muslims to take part in jihad against the West’.

Ask not what you can do for your country, but what your new country can do for you. “Welcome to USA.gov,” a website maintained by the Department of Homeland Security’s U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), bills itself as the “primary gateway for new immigrants to find basic information on how to settle in the United States” — featuring a prominent section for new immigrants about how to access government benefits. “Depending on your immigration status, length of time in the United States, and income, you may be eligible for some federal benefit programs,” the Web page reads.

Former CIA Director David Petraeus told Congress he never believed the Obama administration’s claim that the attack on a U.S. mission in Libya was a spontaneous mob action prompted by a crude anti-Islam video. In closed-door testimony Friday, Petraeus said that he believed all along that Islamic terrorists attacked the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, on the 11th anniversary of 9/11. In so doing, Petraeus recanted his previous account two months ago of that terrible day that left four Americans dead in which he promoted the Obama administration’s official storyline.

CÁDIZ, SPAIN — Starting in the late 1990s, Spanish companies began a drive into Latin America that resulted in their takeover of some of the region’s most prized assets. Now, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy of Spain wants the investment to flow in the other direction. Mr. Rajoy used a weekend summit meeting here to try to persuade Latin American leaders to invest more in recession-hit Spain, suggesting that his country could be “the closest platform” for companies to make forays into the rest of Europe, and even North Africa.

A new documentary claims that O.J. Simpson’s ex-wife Nicole Brown was the victim of a known serial killer and not her famous football star ex. Glen Rogers was convicted of killing two women in 1995, and the latest theory is that his killing spree began months before with Brown-Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman. Created by Investigation Discovery, an offshoot of the Discovery Channel, the documentary claims that Rogers had boasted that he befriended Nicole shortly after he moved to Los Angeles from Ohio. He is said to have boasted about partying with her and, more ominously,

President Obama and aides are asking the same question as other political professionals: Can he sustain the voter turnout organization that elected him twice? In a congratulatory e-mail, Obama campaign manager Jim Messina asks backers to fill out a questionnaire designed to chart their future -- and presumably gather information for future races, including the 2016 presidential election. "We´ve got so much more to accomplish over the next four years," Messina writes. "The first step is looking at the work we did and defining where our movement should go from here."

WASHINGTON — Ten months into 2012, the number of suspected suicides by active-duty soldiers has surpassed last year’s total, even as the Pentagon struggles to stem the persistent problem. According to the Army, there were 20 possible suicides in October, bringing the total for the year to 166 — one more than the total for 2011. The 20 suspected soldier suicides in October is also a spike, compared to 15 in September. U.S. Army officials have been worried about the pace of suicides this year and were concerned the numbers would surge higher than last year

Three Things: 1) Just because you´re paranoid, doesn´t mean there is no conspiracy. 2) If Barack Obama wants a divided nation, we should give it to him. 3) Negative campaign advertising is extremely effective. Let´s start with Benghazi. As a writer of fiction, read by dozens, I love a good conspiracy. If you give me enough time, I can explain how Hurricane Sandy was directly caused by the introduction of New Coke years before, and how Morgan Freeman, the inventor of the teleprompter, is actually Barack Obama´s true father. Washington -- Less than two weeks after Barack Obama won his re-election campaign, protesters gathered Sunday to call on the president and his administration to reject the proposed Keystone XL tar sands pipeline, and to act on climate change. While Republican candidate Mitt Romney said he would support construction of the 1,700-mile pipeline, for the jobs he said the pipeline would create, Obama in the past has rejected rapid approval, citing what he called the "arbitrary nature" of the deadline Republicans proposed for passage and the need for sufficient time for the State Department to gather information

We normally use the term "appeasement" to describe the sort of weakness in the face of despotic aggression that crosses a line separating mere ineptitude from the kind of eager passivity that is tantamount to surrender. Today´s Republican Party establishment, including its elected leadership and its well-placed Washington advisers and media figures, is defining a path of domestic appeasement as dangerous and as foolhardy as any ever pursued on the world stage. To identify behavior as an act of full-scale appeasement, we must satisfy two conditions: (1) we must perceive a clear threat of despotic aggression, and

That didn’t take long. Ever since CIA Director David H. Petraeus resigned, one question has risen above all others: Why? Yes, he had an affair with a woman 20 years his junior (quite the mentor), but hey, there was once a top federal official who had sex with an intern his daughter’s age right in the White House Oval Office, and he didn’t step down. So, why the retired general? (Snip)Me, I think Mr. Obama and his minions put the screws to Mr. Petraeus: You go to the House, they said, and tell them the things

President Obama this morning staged a historic meeting with Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi as he became the first American president to visit the controversial country. The warm reception that he received from Suu Kyi, who made headlines for being under house arrest for two decades because of her push for democracy in the country, is diplomatically important as it sends a clear signal the America supports her cause. Adding to the friendliness between the leaders, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton gave the petite Kyi a giant hug, as the two have met a number of other times before.
