Washington - A top Latino Republican strategist had harsh words for U.S. GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney and joined other conservatives calling for immigration reform. Carlos Gutierrez, who led Romney´s Latino outreach during the presidential campaign, told CNN´s "State of the Union" he was "shocked" Romney last week blamed his overwhelming electoral loss on "gifts" U.S. President Barack Obama gave key groups, especially blacks, Latinos and young people. "(Snip)I think we lost the election because the far right of this party has taken the party to a place that it doesn´t belong.

The Queen and Prince Philip celebrate their 65th anniversary tomorrow and if the Duke of Edinburgh follows tradition he will buy his wife a blue sapphire. Quite what Philip will receive is open to debate but on the eve of the anniversary, two seasoned royal watchers offer him a gift in the form of a new collection of his sometimes wise and occasionally not so wise sayings.[Snip] Only a month after his 85th birthday, Philip told a student who had been working in Romania: "There´s so many of those orphanages over there you feel they breed them just to put

That didn’t take long. Ever since CIA Director David H. Petraeus resigned, one question has risen above all others: Why? Yes, he had an affair with a woman 20 years his junior (quite the mentor), but hey, there was once a top federal official who had sex with an intern his daughter’s age right in the White House Oval Office, and he didn’t step down. So, why the retired general? (Snip)Me, I think Mr. Obama and his minions put the screws to Mr. Petraeus: You go to the House, they said, and tell them the things

President Obama this morning staged a historic meeting with Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi as he became the first American president to visit the controversial country. The warm reception that he received from Suu Kyi, who made headlines for being under house arrest for two decades because of her push for democracy in the country, is diplomatically important as it sends a clear signal the America supports her cause. Adding to the friendliness between the leaders, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton gave the petite Kyi a giant hug, as the two have met a number of other times before.

Here’s a classic. Let’s start with the ghoulish display of sorrow over the body of a dead boy, allegedly killed by Israeli bombing. It’s aimed right at the heart of a someone like Annie Lennox who, upon seeing bombs falling on Gaza immediately imagines Palestinian babies on the receiving end, rather than Hamas militants targeting Israeli babies. And, of course, the news media snatch up the photo-op. [Snip] It is unclear who was responsible for the strike on Annazla: the damage was nowhere near severe enough to have come from an Israeli F-16, raising the possibility that

Who would have thought the ubiquitous education superstar Michelle Rhee would be sitting next to Andy Stern on the board of the Broad Foundation? Yes, that´s right. The Republican governors´ siren and CEO of StudentsFirst works alongside the former SEIU leader, who´s visited the White House more than anyone else in the past four years and who said "workers of the world, unite" back in 2007. AUSTIN -- There´s a new line drawn in the sand in the fight over exhibiting Lt. Col. William Barret Travis´ iconic "victory or death" letter at the Alamo. State archive officials who have opposed exhibiting the fragile document believe that their concerns were justified last week when San Antonio police said a rare copy of the Texas Declaration of Independence might have been stolen from the Alamo. "When we heard about it, we caught our breath. I was like, ´Oh, my goodness,´" said Peggy Rudd, director of the Texas State Library and Archives. "That´s the reason we put so much emphasis

Sen. Dianne Feinstein said Sunday that she has initiated a review of talking points used by U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice on the attack on the American diplomatic facility in Libya, with the goal of determining why the public comments appeared to conflict with the initial assessment of U.S. intelligence sources. Feinstein, chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, defended Rice against what she called the “politicization” of her comments....." But the California senator also said she had “some concern” with the process that produced the unclassified “speaking points” that Rice worked off of

Well, almost outright. This being San Francisco, there are exceptions:The preschool set still could go diaper-less anywhere and everywhere. Fetishists could drop trou for a flogging during the annual Folsom Street Fair, billed as the world´s largest leather fest.

The head of the House Intelligence Committee suggested on Sunday that President Barack Obama might have known about former CIA Director David Petraeus´ extra-marital affair before the November election, and said Attorney General Eric Holder should address this question soon before Congress. U.S. Representative Mike Rogers, a Republican, said Holder´s statement that the Justice Department had not informed the president before the election implied that Holder might have told Obama privately.

Last July, I wrote that the states still had the power to kill ObamaCare, despite the Supreme Court’s gross dereliction of duty in Florida v. HHS. My point was that the insurance exchanges required by PPACA are the key to its success or failure, and that the law grants the states enormous power in the way they are set up. (Snip) Last Friday, three more governors officially announced their refusal to set up state-run ObamaCare exchanges. Ohio’s John Kasich, Wisconsin’s Scott Walker and Maine’s Paul LePage all released statements indicating that they would not assist the Obama administration

Susan Rice, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, is reportedly being considered as a possible replacement for Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who is believed to be leaving soon to spend more time with Bill (i.e., to start her 2016 presidential campaign). Because of Rice´s central role in the Obama administration´s attempt to deceive the American people about what happened in Benghazi, Libya, on September 11, she should be denied confirmation if she is nominated. Everyone whose name isn´t Romney must by now understand what happened on September 11 and how the Obama team spent weeks lying and spinning

WASHINGTON – The way the FBI responded to Jill Kelley´s complaint about receiving harassing emails, which ultimately unraveled or scarred the careers of ex-CIA Director David Petraeus and Marine Gen. John Allen, is the exception, not the rule. The FBI commonly declines to pursue cyberstalking cases without compelling evidence of serious or imminent harm to an individual, victims of online harassment, advocacy groups and computer crime experts told The Associated Press. But in the sensational episode that uncovered the spy chief´s adulterous affair, the FBI´s cyberdivision devoted months of tedious investigative work

Courtesy of some Facebook friends, a translation of an editorial from the Czech newspaper Prager Zeitungon: The danger to America is not Barack Obama, but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president. The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama,

Champions of ObamaCare want Americans to believe that the president´s re-election ended the battle over the law. It did no such thing. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act won´t be fully repealed while Barack Obama is in office, but the administration is heavily dependent on the states for its implementation. Republicans will hold 30 governorships starting in January, and at last week´s meeting of the Republican Governors Association they made it clear that they remain highly critical of the health law. Some Republican governors—including incoming RGA Chairman Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, Ohio´s John Kasich, Wisconsin´s Scott Walker

On Friday, the Environmental Protection Agency rejected petitions from the governors of Georgia, Texas, Arkansas, Delaware, Maryland, New Mexico, and North Carolina to suspend the biofuel-blending requirements established by the federal renewable fuel standard (RFS) program. This program requires refiners to blend increasing quantities of biofuel — mostly corn ethanol — into the nation’s motor-fuel supply. The 2012 target is to blend 13.2 billion gallons of biofuel into our gasoline, a quantity that ratchets up to 13.8 billion gallons in 2013. This year, about 4.7 billion bushels, or 40 percent of the nation’s corn crop,

In 2005, George W. Bush nominated his close friend Harriet Miers to the U.S. Supreme Court. For the first time during his administration, the conservative commentariat revolted, almost en masse. Miers eventually withdrew her nomination — but not before handing Bush a major public relations defeat at the hands of his base — and not before tarnishing her own reputation. Now, some are wondering if history might repeat itself if President Obama nominates U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice for Secretary of State.

You know a European country is in trouble when its business leaders complain about government spending and taxes. (Snip) Nearly 100 French CEOs, among them the heads of Accor, the hotel chain, Air France, Carrefour, L´Oréal, Peugot, Siemens, SociétéGénerale and Veolia, the giant waste and water utility, are urging socialist President Francois Hollande to reduce government spending by 60 billion euros (about $76 billion) over the next five years, and reduce payroll taxes by 30 billion euros over the next two years. The cost of government, they say, has reached “the limits of what is bearable.”

Should federal workers get a raise? With salaries and benefits paid to the government’s civilian workers totaling $271 billion in 2011, deciding whether to extend the freeze enacted last year on cost-of-living increases has important budgetary consequences. Unfortunately, the government’s methodology for comparing pay is too flawed to offer real guidance. The Federal Salary Council, an advisory body of academics and leaders of public employee unions, suggested last month that federal workers are underpaid by an average of 35 percent relative to nonfederal employees. The council’s data come from the “President’s Pay Agent,” the bureaucratic entity that conducts

YANGON, Myanmar — In a historic breakthrough, President Barack Obama on Monday stepped onto the soil of long-shunned Myanmar and into the flag-waving embrace of its once repressed people. "You gave us hope," he declared, the first U.S. president to visit what not long ago had been an international outcast. Tens of thousands of people poured into the streets to welcome Obama to a place still learning its basic freedoms.Speaking to a national audience from the University of Yangon, Obama offered a "hand of friendship" and a lasting U.S. commitment, yet a warning as well.

President Obama treats the truth the way Bill Clinton treated blue dresses on interns. In our raucous political system, it’s natural for a president’s policies to insult our beliefs. But only the most arrogant president insults our intelligence on a near-daily basis. This how-dare-you-criticize-me? president expects us to believe: * That intelligence professionals watching the Benghazi attack in real time and reading flash messages from the scene weren’t sure an obvious terrorist attack was a terrorist attack. A Cub Scout watching that strike go down would have recognized a planned terror operation.

Jerusalem- The crisis now under way in Gaza represents the moment when the wave of Sunni Islamism that has been achieving triumph after triumph in the region since early 2011 finally crashes up against the Jewish state. The form in which the crisis is playing out offers some useful early pointers regarding both the strengths and weaknesses of the emergent Sunni Islamist powers in the region. From the historical perspective, it is now clear that the “Arab spring”—that is, the fall of decrepit Arab nationalist regimes and their replacement by Islamist ones—began not in Tunisia in early 2011,

New York City is moving to demolish hundreds of homes in the neighborhoods hit hardest by Hurricane Sandy, after a grim assessment of the storm-ravaged coast revealed that many structures were so damaged they pose a danger to public safety and other buildings nearby. About 200 homes will be bulldozed in the coming weeks and months, almost all of them one- and two-family houses on Staten Island, in Queens and Brooklyn. That is in addition to 200 houses that are already partially or completely burned down, washed away or otherwise damaged; those sites will also be cleared.

Ex-CIA boss David Petraeus helped socialite pal Jill Kelley land her gig as an honorary South Korean consul — and she tried to turn the unpaid job into an $80 million bonanza, a New York businessman said. Adam Victor, the president of New York-based TransGas Development Systems, said he broke off talks with Kelley after she floated the figure in return for lobbying South Korea’s president about a $4 billion project. “The only reason we talked to her was Gen. Petraeus — 1,000%,” he told the Daily News Saturday. “The magic name was Petraeus.
