"As I said before, she made an appearance at the request of the White House in which she gave her best understanding of the intelligence that had been provided to her. If Senator McCain and Senator Graham and others want to go after somebody, they should go after me. And I´m happy to have that discussion with them. But for them to go after the U.N. ambassador who had nothing to do with Benghazi, and was simply making a presentation based on intelligence that she had received, and besmirch her reputation is outrageous," President Obama said

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi told reporters Wednesday that she was motivated to stay on as the leader of the Democratic caucus in the House because she wanted to change “the role of money in politics.” She also called President Obama “the most respected person on the planet.” “What I talked about here about changing the role of money in politics is really a very important motivator for me to stay in the leader’s office. I think it must be done. When people say that — ‘oh, and I’ve read in the course

Six educators whose schools have been implicated in a statewide cheating probe committed security breaches on standardized tests in 2010, including providing students with answers or failing to properly safeguard test materials, according to the state Department of Education. Three top administrators at the Robert Treat Academy in Newark, one of New Jersey’s most successful charter schools, failed to properly secure test materials for sixth graders who took the NJ-ASK test, according to an investigative report released Tuesday. In a separate report, the state found that three educators at John Marshall School No. 20 in Elizabeth gave answers to third-graders

Shortly before the House of Representatives approved a federal ban on marijuana in 1937, the Republican minority leader, Bertrand Snell of New York, confessed, "I do not know anything about the bill." The Democratic majority leader, Sam Rayburn of Texas, educated him. "It has something to do with something that is called marihuana," Rayburn said. "I believe it is a narcotic of some kind." Seventy-five years, millions of arrests, and billions of dollars later, we are still living with the consequences of that ignorant, ill-considered decision, which nationalized a policy that punishes peaceful people and squanders taxpayer money in a

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Wednesday that he will not allow changes in Social Security to be part of the negotiations to avoid a federal budget fiscal cliff, further narrowing the opportunities for savings that could be tapped to close the deficit. Republicans have insisted that big entitlement programs such as Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid be part of the end-of-year negotiations to head off tax-rate increases and the $110 billion in automatic spending cuts. But Mr. Reid said Democrats have already made changes to Medicare as part of President Obama´s health law,

Michelle Obama: Living

WASHINGTON, D.C ? The First Lady of the United States (FLOTUS) is not an elected official. The title doesn´t come with a paycheck. Michelle Obama, however, has turned it into an exercise in imperial excess, spending taxpayers´ dollars as though the Treasury were her cookie jar. There was an old radio spot that ran in the South, when I lived there some 20 years ago. The commentary always started with, “Ya know what makes me sick?” That’s probably not a great way to grab a breakfast-time audience, but ya know, I’m almost there with the FLOTUS.

Hundreds of thousands of people across Europe joined demonstrations or went on strike today as they demanded governments stop cutting benefits and create more employment. (Snip) To combat a three-year financial crisis over too much sovereign debt, governments across Europe have had to raise taxes and cut spending, pensions and benefits. As well as hitting workers´ incomes and living standards, these measures have also led to a decline in economic output and a sharp increase in unemployment. The 17 country eurozone is expected to fall into recession when official figures are released tomorrow.

Sen. Charles Schumer (N.Y.), the Senate Democrats´ chief political strategist, on Wednesday rejected any possible deficit-reduction deal that does not raise tax rates on the wealthy. Republican leaders have expressed willingness to consider new revenues as part of a compromise to avert the fiscal cliff, but they have rejected raising income tax rates. Schumer said the government cannot raise the $1.5 trillion in new revenues President Obama has called for unless the top rate rises from 35 percent to 39.6 percent. He said Democrats would not accept any proposal that caps tax deductions for families earning below $250,000 a year.

Now that Ahmed Jabari, the head of Hamas´ military wing in Gaza, has been killed by Israel, it is only a matter of time before attacks begin of a different sort. Last weekend saw an intense wave of rocket attacks from Gaza, which wounded several Israelis and caused extensive damage to property despite the Iron Dome defence system and a network of bomb shelters. This raised the spectre of vulnerability in Israel, as the public begins to feel that the level of deterrence achieved by Operation Cast Lead in 2009 has been steadily eroded. Republican senators John McCain, Lindsey Graham and Kelly Ayotte held a news conference on Capitol Hill today to discuss the status of the investigation into the Sept. 11 terror attack in Benghazi, Libya, and the upcoming hearings on the matter. The trio called for the creation of a joint committee to investigate the attack, similar to panels that investigated 9/11, Iran-Contra, and Watergate. Watch McCain’s opening remarks: Graham later responded to a question about speculation that President Obama will pick U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice to succeed Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State.

Barack Obama probably wanted to open his second term by talking about his re-election victory, the audacity of hope, a new dawn for America, yada yada. Instead, as his first press conference looms, he’s going to have to talk about sex and money.[Snip]Why does the Petraeus story matter? Some European commentators think that it reflects lingering American Puritanism, and I have to respectfully disagree. It’s more that Americans have always made gods out of military men--often because they’ve been cast as the saviours of the system. The Arizona Republican tells “CBS This Morning” he believes the unanswered questions surrounding events at Benghazi on Sept. 11 require such a select committee. McCain accused the Obama administration of making misleading statements. He also said U.N. Relief workers who rushed to New York after the superstorm created a logistical challenge: finding accommodations for thousands in a tourist-clogged city in the throes of a housing crisis. For two of the biggest aid organizations, the solutions included government-owned ships floating in the harbor, storm shelters, friends´ apartments—and a luxury hotel in Lower Manhattan. Representatives for the American Red Cross and the Federal Emergency Management Agency said they have placed workers at the Soho Grand since the storm, paying a discounted nightly rate of $310 a room.

The old law defined high treason as espionage or other assistance to a foreign state that damaged Russia´s external security; the new law drops the word "external."
