NEW YORK -- Gun sales are up in the wake of Barack Obama's re-election on Tuesday, driven by fears of tighter regulations under a Democratic president, especially for firearms that might be classified as assault weapons. "Sales are up," said John Kielbasa, owner of Fernwood Firearms in Hankins, N.Y. "I had a guy waiting here first thing in the morning [after the election.] He came in, bought two AK-47s." Kielbasa said that he sells semiautomatic versions of the fully automatic Kalashnikov rifles, as is permitted by law. He said the demand for semiautomatic

Eleven days after Hurricane Sandy made landfall, hundreds of thousands of utility customers in New York and New Jersey are still without power - and they want answers. Unfortunately, the answers provided by the power companies have generated even more anger and frustration. When asked Thursday night when power may be restored, LIPA Chief Operating Officer Michael Hervey told CBS Station WCBS the utility is aiming for the middle of next week. WCBS reports one spokesman suggested power may not be fully restored until Thanksgiving.

A Facebook campaign which claims alleged killer nanny Yoselyn Ortega was not responsible for the deaths of two children in her care has provoked outrage. The page 'Support Innocence of Nanny Yoselyn Ortega' - set up by an anonymous group - is pleading for any information 'that could help bring the real killer or killers to be arrested.' And since the page was launched on October 29th - four days after the brutal stabbings of Lucia Krim and brother Leo in their Manhattan home - it has sparked fury from people who believe that

A shocking video capturing a high school teacher mercilessly bullied by her own students has been revealed showing her flicked in the face while the rest of the class roars with laughter. Standing before the applauding laughter of her students, the substitute teacher in Baltimore, Maryland appears half the size of two girls who approach her while throwing items and flicking her face. Taken two weeks ago from what appears to be a cell phone camera, Baltimore City Schools has confirmed the school to be Digital Harbor High, a

President Obama will today call upon Congress to work with him on preserving the lower tax rates first pushed by President Bush for those Americans who earn under $200,000 a year, but he will state his belief that voters were clear in re-electing him that they support a “balanced approach” to deficit reduction — meaning that the lower tax rates for higher wage earners should expire. The president, aides tell ABC News, will argue that the tax cuts for the middle class are something everyone agrees on, so there’s no reason for them

After attack on U.S. drone, Iran

Washington -- Iran said it took "decisive" action after a U.S. drone entered Iranian airspace in the Persian Gulf last week, a commander said. "Iran will use all its capabilities, including the relevant international agencies, to follow up on this case," Maj. Gen. Ahmad Vahidi said Friday, according to Iran's semi-official news agency ISNA. The Pentagon said two Iranian jets fired on an unmanned U.S. Air Force drone last week. But the United States said the firing happened over international waters on November 1. The Iranian action triggered a formal warning by the United States to Iran through diplomatic channels.

PHILADELPHIA could be facing a class-action lawsuit on behalf of gun owners who say the city violated their privacy by publishing their personal information and launching an interactive Web map that included clickable icons of revolvers over their homes. (Snip) In August, the city's Department of Licenses and Inspections introduced a revamped website, featuring a map that allowed users to view the names and addresses of some gun owners in the city, and the specific reasons why they wanted a permit to carry a concealed weapon. Given Barack Obama's landslide re-election win, you might think that victorious Democrats would be feeling upbeat and positive rather than vindictive. But one Obama fan apparently proved a sore winner - leaving a disgusting message of hate outside a Republican field office. A dead pig wearing a Mitt Romney T-shirt was yesterday found on the sidewalk outside the GOP headquarters in Manhattan Beach, a suburb of Los Angeles. While police are still investigating the circumstances

Energizer Holdings Inc. will reduce its global workforce by more than 10 percent — or about 1,500 employees — as the company closes three manufacturing plants and streamlines other operations. The moves are part of a companywide restructuring plan for the maker of batteries and personal care items such as Schick razors and Playtex tampons. Energizer said Thursday it plans to save about $200 million in annual pre-tax savings through the changes. In August, Energizer first announced that was launching a review of its operations amid sluggish battery sales and heightened competition in the razor category.

Manhattan Beach police were looking Friday for the person or persons who wrapped a dead pig in a Mitt Romney T-shirt and dumped it at a local Republican Party campaign office. The dead animal was found early Thursday morning at the GOP office in the 3900 block of Highland Avenue, the Manhattan Beach Police Department said. Witness Andy Gaeta told KABC-TV that he thought the body was that of a dead human when he saw police approach it, but then realized it was a pig, most likely from a butcher shop, with barbed wire

I’ve elsewhere addressed other shortcomings in this morning’s Wall Street Journal editorial urging Republicans to reassess what is portrayed, in the wake of strong Hispanic electoral support for President Obama, as their hostility to immigration. Here, I’d like to focus on the editors’ swipe at Mitt Romney’s endorsement of “self-deportation”: … Mr. Romney … often pandered to his party’s nativist wing (especially after Texas Governor Rick Perry entered the primaries), even endorsing what he called “self-deportation.” That may have endeared him to one or two radio talk show hosts, but it proved a disaster on Tuesday.

On Friday, author and former Bush speechwriter David Frum joined the Morning Joe panel, where he shared his blunt assessment of the current GOP. When asked who can lead the Republican party now, Frum responded that he believes the Republican party is “a party of followership:” The problem with the Republican leaders is that they’re cowards, not that they’re fundamentally mistaken. The real locus of the problem is the Republican activist base and the Republican donor base. They went apocalyptic over the past four years, and that was exploited by a lot of people in the conservative world.

Chrysler is recalling more than 919,000 older-model Jeep Grand Cherokee and Liberty SUVs worldwide because the air bags can inflate while people are driving them. The recall affects Grand Cherokees from the 2002 through 2004 model years and Libertys from model years 2002 and 2003, according to documents posted Friday on the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website. The safety agency said that a part can fail in the air bag control computer, and the front and side air bags can inflate while the SUVs are being driven.

Has the nation gone irreversibly blue? Did intraparty disunity sabotage Mitt Romney's presidential quest? Or is there some other explanation for the nation's re-election of a president with the worst record in decades? I received an email from a brilliant conservative friend who wonders whether Republicans can ever win another election and thus whether the nation is forever lost. I ran into a college student at church the Sunday before the election, and despite his strong conservatism and high intelligence, he admitted confusion about the candidates' respective positions after the presidential debates. It’s funny watching all the Bush administration alums on Fox despairing over the necessity of outreach to the Hispanic community. (Also at PJ Media, “Yes, George W. Bush Might Well Be the Last Republican President.”) These were the same people who refused to “dignify” the rabid coordinated leftist attacks on President Bush with a response. It would “just prolong the story,” they told us. We are still suffering from their failure to understand the left and fight back, as seen by the fact that Ohio exit polls showed voters still blamed Bush for the bad economy.

“America did not die tonight. It was born tonight.” (Bill Whittle, YouTube, Nov. 6, 2012). Like many who were in bitter tears election night, I would not have had the patience or even the wherewithal to watch Whittle’s lengthy but brilliant YouTube on Tuesday. Watching it this morning, I understand fully that just like Whittle says there are more ways to turn the country around than through the ballot box. We all need the plain commonsense of his advice: “Don’t fight City Hall. Pass it by.” Getting into the right head space is the first tool you will need for mental survival.

A record 70.4 million people were enrolled in the Medicaid health care program for the poor in fiscal year 2011, according to government figures provided to CNSNews.com. That figure equals about 22 percent of the population, which means there was one person on Medicaid for every 5 Americans in 2011. The record number of Medicaid enrollees in 2011 – the earliest year for which figures are available – is a count of all persons enrolled in Medicaid for any part of that year, providing the fullest and most accurate count of the size of the entitlement program.

Hispanic amnesty activists are expanding their goals beyond the so-called “DREAM Act” youth amnesty, towards a national amnesty for roughly 11 million Hispanic illegals. President Barack Obama and Congress “need to come together to deliver change on immigration policy, and by that we mean … a roadmap to citizenship for our parents and communities,” said Cristina Jimenez, direct of an advocacy group, United We Dream. Jimenez was born in Ecuador and arrived in this country as an illegal immigrant. “Deporting members of our community is irresponsible and unacceptable,” added Lorella Praeli, the group’s policy director.

Ten Little-Known Consequences

We all know what the wrecking balls of a second Obama term will be: widespread unemployment, stagnant economic growth, enormous debt. But the consequences don't stop there. Believing in activist government means your work is never finished. You pass a new law that you think combats injustice and inefficiency. Then human nature kicks in and, with great disapprobation, you discover that injustice and inefficiency still exist. So you pass another law, then another. And with no Mitt Romney there to stop you, the Circle of Regulatory Life continues. With Barack Obama back in power,

Woe is us. But next time, the woe will be for the other guys. Keeping that in mind is the secret of surviving the morning after. Losing an election always hurts; winning hurts the other guys, which is why winning is so sweet. This one hurts conservatives a lot, and it’s particularly painful for those with unrealistic great expectations. Pessimists abound. Rep. Ron Paul, who holds the North American franchise for pessimism, says we no longer have to worry about the “fiscal cliff” because we already lie in the rocks and weeds at the bottom of Gruesome Gulch.

Or perhaps an explanation of Obama as an apostle and his “politics as religion?” You could check out “The Gospel According to Apostle Barack” by Barbara Thompson (AuthorHouse 2012). The mouthful of the book’s subtitle is: “In Search of a More Perfect Political Union as Heaven Here on Earth.” The book’s thesis is that Obama is not just the 43rd president of the United States. Much more than that, he’s an apostle akin to

Gov. Deval Patrick’s name is being bandied about Washington, D.C., as a potential replacement to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder now that his close friend, President Obama, has won re-election. Patrick has repeatedly said he would serve out his term as Massachusetts’ chief executive. But that has not stopped speculation he might be lured to join his friend’s Cabinet, particularly in light of Patrick’s close personal relationship with the president and his prominent place in Obama’s re-election effort. Holder yesterday hinted he might be looking to exit his oft-criticized role as the government’s top lawyer.
