Explaining Romney's Surge

"Tonight the part of Wile E. Coyote will be played by Vice President Joe Biden." Thursday night's debate between Biden and Congressman Paul Ryan went according to the super-secret plan of Karl Rove to not only defeat but deeply embarrass the Democratic Party. Rove had previously arranged for President Obama to take two Ambien before the first debate. Not even a maniacal, all-powerful Rove could be blamed for the Democrats decision to attempt to cover-up the details of the terrible tragedy in Benghazi or the serial malfeasances before or after the attack of 9/11 that killed

The world stopped getting warmer almost 16 years ago, according to new data released last week. The figures, which have triggered debate among climate scientists, reveal that from the beginning of 1997 until August 2012, there was no discernible rise in aggregate global temperatures. This means that the ‘plateau’ or ‘pause’ in global warming has now lasted for about the same time as the previous period when temperatures rose, 1980 to 1996. Before that, temperatures had been stable or declining for about 40 years. The new data, compiled from more than 3,000 measuring points on land and sea, was issued

Former vice president Dick Cheney said he found Vice President Joe Biden’s behavior at the debate Thursday night “very disturbing,” adding that it was “the most emotionally unstable debate performance in modern American politics,” reports Mediaite. George W. Bush’s vice president phoned in to Sean Hannity’s Fox News show Friday and outright questioned whether Biden had the right temperament to serve as president, noting that he “is not the type of personality I’d like to see in the Oval Office.” Cheney said that when he was at the White House and met with lawmakers, then-senator Biden

On Libya, Biden was full of 'malarkey'

Vice President Biden didn't just double down on the administration's story of the attack in Benghazi, Libya. He emptied the bank account and put the deed to the house on the table. Asked why the administration initially claimed for more than a week that the incident grew out of a street protest over a YouTube video, Biden said that's what they knew at the time. "That's exactly what we were told ... by the intelligence community. The intelligence community told us that. As they learned more facts about exactly what happened, they changed their assessment," he told moderator Martha Raddatz.

The ultra-violent street gang MS-13 has been designated as an international criminal group on Thursday, marking an unprecedented crackdown targeting the finances of the sprawling gang infamous for hacking and stabbing victims with machetes. The Treasury Department formally designated MS-13, or Mara Salvatrucha, a transnational criminal organization. The aim is to freeze it out of the U.S. financial system and seize what are estimated to be millions of dollars in criminal profits from drug and human smuggling and other crimes committed in this country. The gang was founded by immigrants fleeing El Salvador's civil war more than two decades ago.

With Joe Biden's unseemly mugging done for now, the Sunday morning talk programs return to their usual roster of Washington-centric guests. Face the Nation is full of Congress: Sen. Lindsey Graham and Reps. Darrell Issa and Elijah Cummings to talk about Benghazi-gate and its impact on the presidential campaign, which is fine with the Republicans. Cummings will defend the president. On CNN's State of the Union DNC chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz pops up to chat with Candy Crowley, who will moderate the next presidential debate Tuesday, a townhall forum on Long Island.

Shut up and play nice: How the

Free speech is dying in the Western world. While most people still enjoy considerable freedom of expression, this right, once a near-absolute, has become less defined and less dependable for those espousing controversial social, political or religious views. The decline of free speech has come not from any single blow but rather from thousands of paper cuts of well-intentioned exceptions designed to maintain social harmony. In the face of the violence that frequently results from anti-religious expression, some world leaders seem to be losing their patience with free speech.

On July 4, 1954, almost nine years after the end of the Second World War, food rationing in Britain finally ended. The years of scraping together meals from whatever was to be found in an understocked larder were over. The next half century saw nothing short of a revolution in food production and consumption. New mechanised farming techniques and more effective pesticides combined to send production levels soaring.[Snip] Now those years are being viewed as a golden age, when cheap, plentiful supplies of food flooded the market and families had unprecedented choice in their daily diet. Why?

Security professionals have recently learned that a cartel of Russian hackers is planning to launch a separate attack aimed at stealing money from about 30 U.S. financial institutions, an apparent attempt to piggyback and capitalize on the ongoing cyber attacks on U.S. banks. The emergence of Russian hackers suggests a potential shift in the motivation of the cyber attacks from ideological to financial and also points to a longer duration of the ongoing attacks. “It’s like an axis of evil. There’s nothing like having folks who are conveniently on the same side of the fight,” said Carl Herberger,

People who haven't been paying attention were surprised to learn of this week's debate moderator's (Martha Raddatz) close connection to the President. He was a guest at one of her three weddings and a she was invited to his wedding and a visitor to the vice-president's home just months ago. Other bloggers have made lists of the substantial number of media figures married to Administration appointees and Democratic Party figures. I don't know why this should be surprising. The incestuous relationship between the media and the Democrats is of such longstanding

Obama’s voting blocs have been telling pollsters they’ve curbed their enthusiasm. Prowl into the polling weeds and you’ll notice that across the spectrum, core supporters — blacks, Latinos and young people — are less likely to show up for their idol than they were in 2008. This follows direct orders to temper expectations from on high: “Four years ago, I said that I’m not a perfect man and I wouldn’t be a perfect president.

Granny Warren, the fake Indian, is now portraying herself as the tribune of the middle class, the people Middle Class Joe Biden said have been buried for the last four years, and you can believe him, because he always tells the truth. Here’s a bulletin: Granny Warren is not middle class. She is a snob’s snob, a 1-percenter from way back. There is only one Scrooge McDuck-like plutocrat in this fight, and it’s not Scott Brown. Check out the candidates’ two houses. Brown lives in Wrentham, and bought his house for $307,000 in 1995. It’s now assessed at $511,000.

With two disastrous debate performances behind it, the Obama-Biden ticket is in trouble. President Obama’s supporters assumed the win was in the bag. Though Mitt Romney is taking the lead in national polls, Democratic strategists confidently argued Mr. Romney lacked a path to electoral victory because he would have to “run the table” of the swing states in order to win. Mr. Romney is turning out to be more of a pool shark than they expected. The latest battleground polls show a Romney surge in the critical swing states. The nine most noted swing states are Florida (29 electoral votes),

John Reith, the BBC’s founding father, had always disliked Winston Churchill and ended up loathing him. After the war, he remarked: “A whole lot of people could have done it better and more cheaply.” Even when Churchill was dead, Reith refused to walk past his commemorative plaque in the floor of Westminster Abbey. The feeling had been mutual. Churchill referred to the puritanical Scot who towered over him as “that Wuthering Height”, and wrote: “I absolutely hate him.” These two gigantic egos were always likely to collide spectacularly. Both men had enormous self-belief and very little self-doubt. This was a

Behind the riders, the drugs and the secrets there were the women. And they made choices, too, choices that may have set in motion the unraveling of the greatest doping scandal in the history of sport. In 2004, Lance Armstrong's most trusted teammate George Hincapie wrote an email to the man who used to be Armstrong's closest friend on the bike circuit, Frankie Andreu. It said: "I cannot understand how you can just sit around and let betsy try and take down the whole team." It was a reference to Andreu's wife, Betsy, who had started doing something

In 2009, when Barack Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, it was pointed out that his nomination for the award almost perfectly coincided with his inauguration as president–that is, he was given the award not for anything he had done, but rather for what the Nobel Committee wanted him to do. Hoping for American surrender in the Middle East and capitulation in the war on terror, the Nobel Committee assumed Obama shared their penchant for appeasement and decided to nudge him along. Since there are often candidates for the prize that actually deserve it,

TWENTY-FOUR hours after the American compound in Benghazi was attacked and our ambassador murdered, the tragedy seemed more likely to help President Obama’s re-election campaign than to damage it. The White House already enjoyed more public credibility on foreign policy than on almost any other issue. When Mitt Romney reacted to the attack with a partisan broadside, portraying a news release sent out by the Cairo embassy before any violence began as a White House apology to the attackers, the president’s path forward seemed clear. He would be disciplined and careful, show anger and steel but also coolness under pressure,

n the first presidential debate of 2012, we saw, up close and personal, what Harvey Mansfield called in last week’s issue the ennui of Barack Obama. Obama’s ennui is related to his dislike for the real challenges of governing. More fundamentally, his ennui reflects his declinism. What’s exciting about governing for the next four years if it’s just going to involve managing austerity at home and decline abroad? It’s a depressing prospect. Obama is depressed because today’s liberalism is depressing. Obama is world-weary because modern liberalism is world-weary. Hope and change was just campaign talk.

In neighbouring Zabul province, a roadside bomb killed two policemen and wounded three others. In the Kandahar attack, a bomber, reportedly on foot, targeted Afghan intelligence agents and international staff at an entry checkpoint to the National Directorate of Security (NDS) in Maruf district.

Former President Clinton has been working overtime to drag Barack Obama across the finish line in this year’s election. Clinton has been hands-down President Obama’s most effective advocate. His personal credibility may not be substantial, but unlike Obama, Clinton produced a non-disastrous presidency. Thus, his overall credibility vastly exceeds that of the current president. So how is Obama awarding Clinton for his heavy lifting? By throwing Clinton’s wife under the Benghazi bus, it appears. On Friday, White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters that responsibility for the consulate in Libya
