Romney says Biden ‘doubling

Mitt Romney said Friday that Vice President Joseph R. Biden raised more questions than he answered in this week’s debate when he denied he had been told about security warnings in Libya ahead of the terrorist assault that killed four Americans, including the ambassador. “He’s doubling down on denial, and we need to understand exactly what happened as opposed to people just pushing this aside,” Mr. Romney said at a rally in Richmond. His remarks came a day after Mr. Biden and GOP vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan faced off in their sole debate

As Joe Biden and Paul Ryan tore into each other over chewy topics like Iran and tax during last night's TV debate, there was only one subject preoccupying tens of thousands of viewers - the Vice President's glaring toothy grin. Within minutes of the debate starting, Twitter was abuzz with users taken aback by Biden's behaviour and sent out mocking messages. One parodied his a trademark soundbite: 'For those brief moments you don't see a #BidenSmirk on my face, know that I've got a #BidenSmirk in my heart.'

If you’re not already sitting, you’re best advised to do so now. Yes, in another one of those “only in Davis” moments, officials of the Davis Joint Unified School District have stepped in to cancel Emerson Junior High School’s production of a stage version of Charles Dickens’ 1843 classic, “A Christmas Carol.” The reason: that ugly word “Christmas.” Students in the play were informed of the decision at Monday’s rehearsal. The drama teacher in charge of the production, Gina Smith, then sent an email to parents of the students involved explaining how the play had been unceremoniously taken away from them

Colombia: 41bn barrels of oil by 2030?

Full-steam ahead, that’s how Colombia’s government is determined to set their “energy locomotive”, as they call their ambitious energy plans. The Andean country is already the fourth-biggest oil exporter in the region, having almost doubled its production since 2006 to 956,312 barrels of oil a day. With production humming along, the country’s energy minister Federico Renjifo, said he is now switching his focus on strengthening reserves. “What keeps me up at night is more the reserves than arriving at one million barrels,” he said, announcing a potential a twenty-fold increase in oil reserves over the next eighteen years.

Remember David Chalian, the ousted Yahoo! News Washington bureau chief who took an ill-advised racial jab at the Republican Party and its presidential nominee Mitt Romney? He has a new professional home, in suburban Virginia, as the new vice president of video programming at the left-leaning Politico website. In August on the set of the ABC News/Yahoo! News webcast in Tampa, Fla., at the site of the Republican National Convention, Chalian was caught on a live microphone suggesting the GOP would be happy to have “black people drowning” as Hurricane Isaac threatened New Orleans and the Gulf Coast.

Washington—Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s smirking, aggressive performance during the vice-presidential debate on Thursday could be seen as a message for his boss: Here’s how you do it. But for President Obama, who is hunkering down at debate camp in Williamsburg, Va., for the weekend, the challenge is to find the right mix of assertiveness and calm when he faces Mitt Romney on Tuesday in a town hall-style debate. And while Mr. Obama will try to avoid repeating his own passive performance in the first presidential debate, he may also want to steer clear of Mr. Biden’s

An extremist jihadi group which is thought to be linked to al-Qaeda fought alongside a group of rebels who seized a government missile defence base in Syria yesterday, activists said, heightening fears that extremists are taking advantage of the chaos in the country to acquire advanced weapons. Videos posted online said to have been shot inside the base said the group, Jabhat al-Nusra, participated in the overnight battle for the air defence base near the village of al-Taaneh, east of Aleppo in northern Syria. Awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to the European Union Friday, former Norwegian Prime Minister Thorbjorn Jagland, the hapless award committee chairman, said: "We want to focus on what has been achieved in Europe in terms of peace and reconciliation.… It is a message to Europe to secure what they have achieved … and not let the continent go into disintegration again because it means the emergence of extremism and nationalism." A prize, in other words, awarded for future efforts as much as past achievements. And so the descent of the Nobel Peace Prize into parody or, failing that, pastiche continues.

Defence chiefs are drawing up plans for a faster withdrawal from Afghanistan, after George Osborne challenged their strategy and suggested that all troops should come home immediately. The Daily Telegraph has learnt that at a recent Whitehall meeting on withdrawal, the Chancellor questioned the purpose of continuing Britain’s Afghan mission for another two years. Why Dems Loved Biden’s

The morning after the vice presidential debate, Democrats are delighted. Vice President Joe Biden’s obnoxious display was exactly what was needed to cheer them up after a week of morose speculation about why President Obama was so passive and uninspired at last week’s first presidential debate with Mitt Romney. Indeed, the more Biden giggled, smirked and interrupted Paul Ryan, the better they liked it. While his condescending and bullying behavior contradicted liberal doctrine about conservatives being the ones guilty of polluting the public square with political incivility, it embodied their complete contempt for both Republicans and their ideas.

Dallas – The North Texas mom who pled guilty to gluing her toddler daughter’s hands to a wall, kicking her in the stomach and beating her over “potty training” issues has been sentenced to 99 years in prison. It was up to State District Judge Larry Mitchell to decide how long Elizabeth Escalona would spend behind bars. For days the judge heard from medical experts, police, family members and the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office showed dozens of pictures of little Jocelynn Cedillo. The photos, taken at the hospital, showed bruises from the child’s head down to her feet.

As Mitt Romney continues to make gains in swing state polls in the wake of his dominant debate performance last week, it’s becoming increasingly possible that Americans could wake up on Nov. 7 to a 269-269 Electoral College tie. In such a case, Romney would almost surely win the presidency, according to analysis by the Washington Examiner. Under the U.S. Constitution, in the event of an Electoral College tie, the presidential race is turned over to the House of Representatives (assuming no unexpected defections when the electors formally vote in December). And here’s the twist:

Mrs Romney, who looks, dare we say, almost too flawless in her portrait, reveals that Mitt has struggled with a short temper in the past.

Geithner defends Obama as

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner on Friday defended the White House approach to the deficit as his department officially confirmed a fiscal 2012 deficit of $1.089 trillion. That figure is $207 billion less than in 2011, and $238 billion less than forecast in February. The fact the deficit remains above $1 trillion for the fourth year in a row, despite President Obama's pledge to cut it in half by now, is a major headache for Obama’s reelection campaign. In a joint statement with acting Budget Director Jeff Zients, Geithner sought to blame Congress for the deficit.

While Vice President Biden stressed the importance of "facts" a total of 26 times on the debate stage, those facts required considerable clarification Friday from the White House. (Snip) At another point, Biden appeared to signal a potential shift in policy when he described the president's proposed tax hike as affecting people making $1 million and more. But White House Press Secretary Jay Carney, while effusively praising Biden's feisty performance, had to use his briefing Friday to clear up those and other statements. On both points, Carney sought -- at length -- to explain why Biden's remarks were being misinterpreted.

(Reuters) - U.S. intelligence efforts in Libya have suffered a significant setback due to the abandonment and exposure of a facility in Benghazi, Libya identified by a newspaper as a "CIA base" following a congressional hearing this week, according to U.S. government sources. The intelligence post, located 1.2 miles from the U.S. mission that was targeted by militants in a September 11 attack, was evacuated of Americans after the assault that killed Ambassador Christopher Stevens. Three other Americans died in the attacks on U.S.-occupied buildings, including two who were hit in a mortar blast at the secret compound.

Vice President Biden's laughter during the vice presidential debate Thursday night is still the talk of Twitter on Friday morning, and is turning into one of the most memorable aspects of the first and only VP debate this cycle. Republicans think Biden was disrespectful to the American people and laughed off serious issues during Thursday night's debate with Paul Ryan. The Republican National Committee released a new Web video almost immediately after the debate, and members of Mitt Romney's campaign referred to Biden's reaction shots in most of the post-debate interviews. Its a stunning reversal from October 2008, when Obama enjoyed clear leads in every national poll conducted that month. The last time any poll should McCain with a lead was toward the end of September. (Snip) This goes a long way to explain why I'm convinced the overwhelming majority of polls

Plans to save Big Bird, the fuzzy yellow character on U.S. public television's "Sesame Street," from possible extinction are taking shape in the form of a puppet-based protest next month dubbed the "Million Muppet March." The demonstration is planned for November 3 at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., three days before the general election. Before the presidential debate between Democratic President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney had concluded on October 3, two men who had never met each floated the Million Muppet March idea on social media. They immediately united to defend public broadcasting.

Simply put, most do not understand why the president would be in a virtual dead heat with Republican Mitt Romney after all that Obama has done as president
