HOLLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say a blaze that displaced dozens of people from a southwest Michigan apartment complex may have been sparked by a resident trying to cook a squirrel with a propane torch. Fire Chief Jim Kohsel tells MLive.com that the resident apparently planned to eat the animal and was burning off its fur on a third-floor deck at the building in Ottawa County's Holland Township when the fire broke out Wednesday. Flames spread to the roof. Kohsel says eight apartments are destroyed and others damaged. The resident's name wasn't immediately released.

Spectators at a children's triathlon in Florida were brought to tears by the sight of Marines carrying a little boy with a broken prosthetic leg across the finish line. Bone cancer-survivor Ben Baltz, 11, was participating in his third triathlon of the summer when he had an accident with his prosthetic leg Sunday during the final portion of the race.

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama is providing protection for whistle-blowers in the national security arena so that they can report waste, fraud and abuse without fear of retaliation. The president has signed a policy directive providing the protection because legislation in Congress has not done so. A rewrite of the whistle-blower protection law is in the Senate. House Republicans removed the proposed protection for those involved in national security. Under the president's new policy, whistle-blowers who handle classified information — meaning almost everyone in the intelligence community —

Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s 2013 city budget is the calm before the storm that could make everyone forget the worst blizzards in memory. So feel free to savor the calm just a moment before stepping forth into the cold winds of reality. For the second straight year, Emanuel has submitted a reasonable, responsible budget that faces up to the city’s financial problems. Even better, this year’s budget proposal contains no new tax increases or fees of any sort, although it profits considerably from the ones he pushed through last year.

After this morning's surprisingly positive jobless claims number was released, three things happened: 1 Lots of people felt better about the economy 2 Democrats cheered because they thought the number would help Obama (Snip) HOWEVER...It is likely that some of the jobless claims in one large state--California--were not included in the claims reported to the Department of Labor this week. This happens occasionally, our source says. When a state's jobless claims bureau is short-staffed, sometimes the state does not process all of the claims that came in during the week in time to get them to the DOL. The source

Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Reince Priebus sent a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder on Thursday demanding an investigation into online campaign contributions to the president's reelection campaign. "[T]he President's campaign committee does not use the industry standard practices to guard against receiving fraudulent or excessive contributions via the internet," Priebus alleges in the letter. "As a result, the President's campaign committee is vulnerable to the receipt of prohibited contributions. Their failure to adhere to the industry standard has caused these questions regarding whether the campaign is deliberately inviting prohibited contributions."

Last week, following the presidential debate, national attention was again focused on the Dodd-Frank Act, the Obama administration’s response to the financial crisis. The attention is well deserved: Dodd-Frank, Obamacare and the threat of higher taxes brought on by January’s fiscal cliff are among the chief reasons why the U.S. economy is stuck in its weakest recovery on record. While Democrats claim Wall Street was their target, the truth is the regulatory burden of Dodd-Frank is inescapable no matter where you live or work. If you buy food, consume energy, use a debit card, want

Mayor Rahm Emanuel said Wednesday he’s counting on up to $30 million in fines from speed cameras installed at roughly 40 schools and parks to help bankroll his “children first” budget. The fast roll-out of a speed camera plan delayed by legal and technical complications helps to explain how Emanuel was able to keep his hands out of taxpayers’ pockets for 2013 and still make a big investment in kids.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said his former boss, President Barack Obama, always scores the political points he needs to win when he needs them. Emanuel, who was Obama’s first White House chief of staff, used a basketball metaphor to describe his confidence that Obama will regain momentum in the presidential race. “He is the ultimate three-point shooter with three seconds left on the clock,” Emanuel, 52, said at a Bloomberg Breakfast in Chicago. “That’s when he performs better. He has throughout his career.”

Chinese writer Mo Yan won the Nobel Prize for Literature today. Yan's work, which has been banned in China, was praised by the awarding committee for its "hallucinatory realism." PW has reviewed five of his novels (two were awarded stars) and said that "If China has a Kafka, it may be Mo Yan" and called Yan "one of China's most important contemporary writers." Arcade Publishing, which has published five of his books, stated that on October 11, a few hours after the Nobel announcement, all copies of all of the books had sold out

In his pre-game commentary for tonight's debate, the NBC political director claimed that, as with Cheney versus Edwards and Bentsen versus Quayle, Biden—matched up against Paul Ryan—has "gravitas" going for him. View the video after the jump, along with a list of some of Grandpa Gravitas's most famous gaffes.Note: speaking of gaffes, you might sayTodd had one of his own. David Harmer, who ran the closest race of any California Republican House candidate in 2010, sends along this message of his particular disdain for Vice President Biden, and his challenge to Romney donors. I don’t mind stupid people. It’s stupid people who think they’re smart that aggravate me — which goes a long way toward explaining my profound and enduring antipathy to Vice President Joe Biden, the most vapid gasbag ever to hold the office. Back when I was young and frisky and counsel to a subcommittee of the Senate Judiciary Committee, I routinely had to sit

With less than a month to go before the 2012 presidential election Mitt Romney’s decision to turn down an invitation to appear on a Nickelodeon “news” special, "Kids Pick the President," with children is drawing liberal-media barbs. “First Big Bird, now Nickelodeon,” cracked Washington Post TV critic Lisa de Moraes. “What’s up with Mitt Romney and kids?” Linda Ellerbee, "Kids Pick the President" host and a former NBC anchor and reporter and CNN commentator, denounced Romney for his decision. “That's several million kids who actually want to get involved in the democratic process,” Ellerbee said.

Last March, when the French Muslim terrorist Mohamed Merah murdered a teacher and three children at a French Jewish school in Toulouse, a media firestorm resulted. Things have not gotten easier for French Jews since then. As the New York Times noted this week, French Jews say anti-Semitic threats have in fact escalated since March, Merah’s act having stirred “empathy” and “emulation.” Indeed, the main thing that appears to have prevented further catastrophes is good police work.

It is widely reported that America is coming apart. We are in more than a culture war. We are in a seismic event. We are two Americas, and one makes no sense to the other. The inability to make sense has been coming for a long time. Artists have been deconstructing art throughout the twentieth century – from the Armory Show, the Expressionism and Surrealism. (snip) People follow artists. In 1921 W.B. Yeats wrote a poem called “The Second Coming.” It is his vision of worldwide insanity and the inability to make sense.

For the second time in a week, a government unemployment report is sowing confusion—and may not be as positive as the markets think. First it was last Friday's August payrolls report, which showed an unexpectedly large drop in the unemployment rate, that spurred confusion (and conspiracy theories). Now, a sharp drop in the pace of new jobless claims has also left people scratching their heads. The Labor Department on Thursday said the number of people filing jobless claims last week dropped by a seasonally adjusted 30,000—

On his syndicated radio show Wednesday afternoon, conservative host Rush Limbaugh seemingly likened the debacle over the administration’s handling of the Libyan attacks to former President Bill Clinton‘s initial denial of extramarital affairs with intern Monica Lewinsky, and then explained that if the Obama administration was capable of “lying” about the Benghazi consulate attacks then it is not inconceivable that they would also lie about the September jobs report. Several prominent conservatives including former G.E. CEO Jack Welch have accused the administration of manipulating the unemployment numbers to its lowest

It's usually easy to predict how particular California state legislators will vote on a bill: 99 percent of the time, Democrats vote the same way as the majority of their party; 94 percent of the time, Republicans vote the same way as the majority of their party, according to a Bee review of voting records from the 2011-2012 legislative session. The two parties are each unanimous in their support or rejection of a bill during the vast majority of votes. Every Democrat in the Assembly or Senate voted the same way on about 86 percent of bills.

Some 50,000 Palestinians, most of them from the Gaza Strip, have been granted Egyptian citizenship over the past few months, an Egyptian security official revealed Thursday. The official said that the Egyptian Interior Ministry had been instructed to give Egyptian citizenship to all Palestinians who were born to Egyptian mothers. The official, who was not identified, told the Egyptian newspaper El-Watan that the instructions came from the country’s High Administrative Court in Cairo last May. The official pointed out that the number of Palestinians who have received Egyptian citizenship increased dramatically after the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak.

Hollywood Reporter's Paul Bond is reporting that "Hating Breitbart," the Andrew Marcus film which was to hit theaters two days from now has been pushed back to October 19 in a dispute over the film's rating. Marcus has pushed for PG-13, but the MPAA retained its R rating of the film even after the filmmaker deleted all F-bombs except a few delivered by Breitbart himself. So nine days from now, because time is running short, the film will be released with an R rating. Why MPAA is being so inconsistent?

Out of 750 babies born before 24 weeks in the womb, 92 lived for at least a year, the infant mortality data from the Office of National Statistics show. The figures from 2010 are sure to reignite the abortion debate following comments by Jeremy Hunt, the new Health Secretary and Maria Miller, the new women's minister that the current 24 week limit should be lower. David Cameron has ruled out a new Parliamentary debate on the limit. The figures show that five babies born at less than 22 weeks gestation out of 247 born alive, lived for

Today marks exactly one month since terrorists attacked the U.S consulate in Benghazi, Libya, killing our ambassador and three other American personnel. In the weeks since, Washington has been gripped by the unfolding scandals over the Obama administration’s failure to heed warnings of a growing terrorist danger in eastern Libya; its failure to provide additional security requested by U.S. personnel on the ground; and its failure to acknowledge that what happened in Libya was in fact a terrorist attack. But all this has obscured the more serious scandal: the Obama administration’s utter failure to respond.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not hoping for this or expecting it, but maybe it wouldn’t be the end of the world if Mitt Romney became president. Never in my life have I supported a Republican for president, and I don’t intend to start now. I’m voting for Obama, and I urge you to do the same. I don’t even really understand the intense disappointment many liberals seem to feel about the president’s first term. For heaven’s sake, with the Affordable Care Act, he crossed off what had been the top item on the liberal

House Republicans are pressing the Obama administration for more information about a solar-panel company that received a $400 million loan guarantee, then went bankrupt and is now the focus of a criminal investigation. The committee pursuing documents on Colorado-based Abound Solar is the same that investigated the half-billion taxpayer loan to Solyndra, whose bankruptcy rocked the Obama administration. Two more Department of Energy-backed companies have since filed for bankruptcy, with Abound Solar being the latest. Lawmakers are now questioning whether the administration might have known about serious
