A new anti-Mitt Romney ad from the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees features Richard Hayes, the garbageman who deals with the Romneys’ trash at their oceanfront mansion in La Jolla, California. Dubbed by AFSCME as one of the “people who make America happen,” Hayes talks about his laborious job, and criticizes the GOP nominee for not caring about the government-dependent “47 percent” of voters who the candidate believes won’t vote for him anyway: “My name is Richard Hayes, and I pick up Mitt Romney’s trash. We’re kind of like the invisible people.

This weekend brought us another reminder of how low the New York Times’s standards are for authors who are willing to make liberal arguments while claiming conservative credentials. On Sunday, the newspaper ran an article on President Obama’s health care law that was about as vacuous as any you’ll read, but it had this going for it: the author, J.D. Kleinke, is a resident fellow at the right of center American Enterprise Institute and his piece is entitled “The Conservative Case for Obamacare.” The article doesn’t make any effort to engage actual conservative policy

The US State Department said Monday it would work with Congress to try to unblock some $450 million in economic aid for Egypt, after a lawmaker froze the funds. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland confirmed the US administration had asked Congress to free up the money in two tranches to support the government in Cairo. But she said there were "concerns" about the plan amid rocky ties between the United States and Egypt, under its new Islamist leader, President Mohamed Morsi. "We're obviously going to have to work with the Congress in the coming days and weeks to explain why

During the perfect storm of '08, Barack Obama enjoyed a 7% advantage over John McCain when it came to party turnout. In other words, Democrats enjoyed a D+7 turnout advantage over Republicans. This also means Democrats were more excited and enthused to vote in almost record numbers. According to a new CNN poll, Obama is going to beat that! According to CNN, Democrats are even MORE enthused and excited than they were in 2008! According to CNN, Republicans are just as demoralized and willing to stay home as they were in 2008!

President Barack Obama, holed up at a swank Las Vegas-area resort to get ready for his first debate with Mitt Romney, jokingly told a volunteer on Monday that debate prep can be "a drag." (Snip) "We had a great prep, and it was a lot of fun," he told Stinger. "It's very nice. Although basically they're keeping me indoors all the time. It's a drag. They're making me do my homework." Obama campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki declined to shed much light on the president's debate prep sessions, in which Democratic Sen. John Kerry has been playing Romney.

Mitt Romney's garbage man is starring in a new attack ad that features him at work picking up trash outside the Republican nominee's $12 million California mansion. The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) labor union features the garbage man in an ad that juxtaposes him talking about how tough his job it with Romney's notorious '47 per cent' comments in which he says that 'my job is not to worry about those people' who don't pay federal income tax. In the ad, the garbage man states: 'My name is Richard Hayes, and I pick up

In its latest effort to slap Mitt Romney's "47 percent" comment, the Obama campaign on Monday tapped a young woman with Down syndrome to pull at the heartstrings of undecided voters. The Obama-Biden campaign's web page featured a "letter of the week" from a 25-year-old woman who wrote that "I am one of the 47% of Americans who fall under Mitt Romney's definition of 'entitled' and 'unable to take responsibility for my life.' I have Down syndrome." The letter comes on the heel of the campaign's TV ad playing in battleground states that

Cambridge, Mass. — Celebrated historian Bertram Oxley has uncovered a memorandum from former Japanese Emperor Hirohito to Admiral Yamamoto dated December 6, 1941, showing that the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was motivated by an offensive film made by Charlie Chaplin ridiculing Japanese cuisine. “Contrary to historical accounts over the last seventy years,” Professor Oxley said in an interview today with the BBC, “What appeared to be a meticulously planned surprise attack was actually a spontaneous demonstration by moderate sushi connoisseurs in the Imperial Navy in response to a hateful and offensive movie.

Fifteen percent of respondents said they were switching their vote from Obama in 2008 to Romney in 2012. The top reasons cited for

Rep. According to Wikipedia and another source, The Root is an online magazine devoted to black culture. It's also owned byThe Washington Post. Saturday, The Root published an entire article devoted to this headline: Will Romney Reach out to Racists in Debates? The subtext of the article is even more noxious; that if Romney does win it will be due to racism: Now the Romney campaign finds itself at a crossroads. With just over a month to go before the election, the question becomes: Will he be willing to do what McCain wasn't, in order to win at any cost?

A group of 25 male students held a “naked protest” yesterday inside a state university in the Philippines to condemn a controversial anti-Islam film that has sparked violent protests in several countries. The students wore only bonnets over their faces as they ran inside the Manila campus of Polytechnic University of the Philippines to join calls for the government to block the amateur film Innocence of Muslims on the Internet. “We condemn this film that insults Islam and urge everyone to respect all religions,” said Marley Cabase, head of the Alpha Phi Omega fraternity that organised the protest.

As the slugfest that was the UMass Lowell/Herald debate wound down, Sen. The second debate between Republican Scott Brown and Democrat Elizabeth Warren in the Massachusetts Senate race is already getting a little testy, as Brown charged Warren with treating him like one of her students in a particularly edgy exchange. The candidates were debating bipartisanship in Congress when Warren, a Harvard Law School professor, began to interrupt. "Excuse me. I'm not a student in your classroom," a clearly peeved Brown said. "Please let me respond." A stunned crowd gave a prolonged, "Oooooooooh," at Brown's statement.

An Obama administration appointee has resigned in connection with another bombshell report detailing the waste of taxpayer money at feel-good conferences -- this time, at a pair of Veterans Affairs summits in Orlando that cost more than $6 million. John Sepulveda, who as assistant secretary for human resources and administration was the agency's top HR official, resigned just as the VA Office of Inspector General released its 150-page report on the conferences, held on his watch in July and August 2011. The report said he "abdicated his responsibilities" in overseeing the conferences, leading to "numerous examples of excessive costs, and

WASHINGTON — In a move aimed at shoring up support from Hispanic and progressive voters, President Barack Obama will designate the California home of labor leader Cesar Chavez as a national monument. Obama will establish the Cesar E. Chavez National Monument in Keene, Calif., during a campaign swing through California next week. The property is known as La Paz, short for Nuestra Señora Reina de la Paz, or Our Lady Queen of Peace. It served as national headquarters of the United Farm Workers, as well as Chavez's home, from the early 1970s until his death in 1993.

The conventional wisdom is that Wednesday night’s presidential debate is a huge opportunity for Republican nominee Mitt Romney. The emperor-has-no-clothes reality is that the political forum would be meaningless if President Barack Obama could stand on the stage and boast his administration had ushered in an era of low unemployment, surging economic growth, reasonable gas prices and rising prosperity for the American family. None of that is remotely plausible. The jobless rate has been north of 8 percent for 43 months. Median family income fell more during the Obama recovery than during the recession. Economic growth is slowing

For all their visibility along the campaign trail, A-list celebrities hold little sway over the way Americans vote, an omnibus poll for CBS News and Vanity Fair magazine has suggested. Eighty-nine percent of respondents said celebrity endorsements of a particular candidate made no difference to them when it came to putting an X beside a name in the voting booth. Three per cent even said a celebrity endorsement would make them less likely to favor a candidate. Just 2 per cent said they were more likely to favor a hopeful on the basis of a celebrity's thumbs-up.

Jerusalem - The Assad regime in Syria brought about Muammar Gaddafi's death by providing France with the key intelligence which led to the operation that killed him, sources in Libya have claimed. French spies operating in Sirt, Gaddafi's last refuge, were able to set a trap for the Libyan dictator after obtaining his satellite telephone number from the Syrian government, they said. In what would amount to an extraordinary betrayal of one Middle Eastern dictator by another, President Bashar al-Assad sold out his fellow tyrant in an act of self-preservation, a former senior intelligence official in Tripoli said. By all means, please tell us about the job-killing consequences of the monstrous law you voted for twice, former Democratic Senator: The Supreme Court decision in June upholding the Affordable Care Act leaves in place a tax on medical devices that threatens thousands of American jobs and our global competitiveness. It will also stifle critical medical innovation in the industry that gave us defibrillators, pacemakers, artificial joints, stents, chemotherapy delivery systems and almost every device we depend on to save lives. The 2.3% tax will be charged to manufacturers on each sale and takes effect in January. (Snip) That's Indiana's

Nearly 90 percent of Americans will see their taxes increase in 2013 if Congress and President Barack Obama can’t find a way to renew tax policies that are scheduled to expire at the end of this year, the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center said in a report issued Monday. The average tax increase will be $3,500 per household if the current tax policies expire, the report estimated. It isn’t necessarily an all-or-nothing decision Congress confronts – it could choose to extend some of the tax provisions but terminate others – but it’s precisely the complexity of picking and choosing from the
