A Young Mitt Romney’s Other Mission:
Romance
Time Magazine, by Paul Moakley    Original Article

Before there was Romney the presidential candidate, there was Romney the romantic. In this week’s cover story, Jon Meacham looks at how Romney’s identity was shaped by his Mormon roots. To illustrate this formative time in the presidential candidate’s life, we turned to a surprising photo found in the archives that shows the rarely-seen personal side of the candidate. On a recent cover shoot I asked Romney about the image and found out that around 1968, while serving as a Mormon missionary in France, a young Mitt made several photographs with the help of his LDS friends. He described how

It would be hard to top the historic significance of the term that just ended, but Supreme Court watchers say the justices will confront some momentous questions once again when their next term officially begins Monday. Among the cases confirmed on the docket: a closely watched test of racial preferences in college admissions, whether a single sniff by a police dog constitutes a “home search” and a major business case testing whether corporations can be penalized in U.S. courts for human rights violations committed abroad. (Snip) Arguably the most controversial case on the docket deals

Oxford, Miss. - Attorney General Eric Holder says U.S. laws requiring the Justice Department or a federal court to pre-approve changes to voting laws in states with a history of racial bias are still needed. Speaking at the University of Mississippi, Holder said Thursday night that he wished such pre-approval was no longer necessary. But he said that discrimination is not dead, pointing to a recent federal court decision that concluded Texas lawmakers had unfairly drawn legislative districts to exclude minorities.

Washington - World powers decided Thursday to lay the groundwork for another round of negotiations with Iran over its disputed nuclear program, a senior US official said, but they want a significantly improved offer from the Islamic republic. Neither the US nor any of its international partners was ready to abandon diplomacy in favor of military or other actions, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has advocated. The new hope for a negotiated end to Iran’s decade-long nuclear standoff came after Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton met with the foreign ministers of Britain, China, France,

An unruly passenger who allegedly frightened and intimidated passengers aboard an Orange County-bound flight by pacing the airplane’s aisles, demanding alcohol and threatening to kill passengers, is expected to appear in federal court Friday. (Snip) Passengers on the flight said they eventually had to hold the man down for the final two hours of the flight, using belts from their pants and other items to restrain him. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu drew a torrent of ridicule Thursday when he unfolded before the General Assembly of the United Nations a cartoon bomb and drew a red line on it with a marker he pulled from his pocket. (Snip) Netanyahu’s speech was not even meant for US President Barack Obama, who may ultimately decide the fate of the Iranian nuclear program. Instead, Netanyahu was speaking over Obama’s head, directly to the American president’s employer and boss: the American voter. Washington - A new American Jewish Committee poll found 65 percent of Jews nationwide planning to vote for US President Barack Obama versus 24 percent for Mitt Romney, with another 10 percent undecided. The poll, conducted Sept. 6-17 among 1,040 Jewish voters nationwide, found Obama doing better than Romney among Jews of all religious backgrounds with the exception of Orthodox Jews, who favored the Republican nominee.

Washington - S President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu share the goal of preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon and will maintain close cooperation on the issue, the White House said on Thursday, after the prime minister addressed the United Nations. But the White House stopped short of saying Obama would give any ground on his resistance to setting a "red line" on Iran's nuclear program, even after the prime minister hammered on the need for such an ultimatum before the UN General Assembly.

California’s state song will soon be changed from "California, Here I Come!" to "California, There It Goes!" An American icon, the Campbell Soup Company, is closing its plant in Sacramento, leaving 700 people without jobs. The plant was built in 1947, and some of its workers have worked there for forty years or more. Most of the items produced in Sacramento will be transferred to Campbell’s plants in Texas, North Carolina, and Ohio. Another plant in South Plainfield, Ne Jersey is being closed as well. President Obama and Republican rival Mitt Romney each trolled for military votes Thursday in the critical swing state of Virginia, and although polls show Mr. Obama with a slight edge overall in the state, he is having trouble convincing veterans that he should remain their commander in chief. For the second straight day, Mr. Obama shared a battleground state with Mr. Romney, who spoke to a veterans group in Springfield while the president reached out to voters at a campaign stop in the military stronghold of Virginia Beach. Both candidates were in Ohio Wednesday, nearly passing each other

If not for sports champions and terrorists, President Obama’s public schedule for September would be nearly empty of official events, as he devoted most of his time to campaigning for re-election. On Sept. 6, Mr. Obama accepted the Democratic Party’s renomination in Charlotte, N.C. In the 21 days since then, the president has had a total of 14 events on his White House schedule, not including regular daily briefings and occasional lunches with Vice President Joseph R. Biden. In the same period, Mr. Obama’s other two “jobs” — campaigner and fundraiser — crowded out his

PASADENA, Calif. — The landing site of the Mars rover Curiosity was once covered with fast-moving and possibly waist-high water that could have possibly supported life, NASA scientists announced Thursday. Although planetary scientists have often speculated that the now-desiccated surface of Mars was once wet, Curiosity’s cameras provided the first proof that flowing water was present on a least one part of Mars for “thousands or millions of years.” The early finding led John Grotzinger, the top mission scientist at the Mars Science Laboratory, to conclude that Curiosity had found a

In mid-September 2008, Lehman Brothers collapsed and the bottom fell out of the financial system. Barack Obama handled it coolly. John McCain did not. Obama won the presidency. (Given the country’s condition, he would have won anyway. But this sealed it.) Four years later, mid-September 2012, the U.S. mission in Benghazi went up in flames, as did Obama’s entire Middle East policy of apology and accommodation. Obama once again played it cool, effectively ignoring the attack and the region-wide American humiliation. “Bumps in the road,” he said. Nodding tamely were the

When gunmen struck the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, on Sept. 11 of this year, the response from American officials was almost simultaneous: They immediately set about collecting information about the attackers, some of whom were quickly identified as foreigners, and tracing links from them to known extremist groups, a knowledgeable source has told Yahoo News. The source's description came as fresh news accounts cast doubt on the White House's insistence that it has been forthright all along about what it knew about the attack. AUSTIN — More than a half-century after the Supreme Court ordered the University of Texas to admit a black man to its law school, the sprawling live-oak-and-limestone campus is again the site of a monumental battle over the use of race in university admissions. But this time the challenge comes from a white woman. Abigail Fisher says the color of her skin cost her a spot in the 2008 freshman class at the university she had longed to attend since she was a child. Under the banner of racial diversity, Fisher contends, the UT admissions process — which considers race

Los Angeles – A federal judge on Thursday ordered a California man behind a crudely produced anti-Islamic video that inflamed parts of the Middle East to be detained because he is a flight risk. Giving a whole new meaning to “pregnancy brain,” a new study shows that male DNA — likely left over from pregnancy with a male fetus — can persist in a woman’s brain throughout her life. Although the biological impact of this foreign DNA is unclear, the study also found that women with more male DNA in their brains were less likely to have suffered from Alzheimer’s disease — hinting that the male DNA could help protect the mothers from the disease, the researchers say. During mammalian pregnancy, the mother and fetus exchange DNA and cells. Previous work has shown that

Four in ten six-year-olds failed a back-to-basics reading test after struggling with words such as ‘farm’, ‘goat’ and ‘shine’. Pupils were tested for the first time this summer on how well they use the traditional phonics method of reading, where children learn the letter sounds of English and how to blend them. Forty per cent – nearly 237,000 children – were below the pass mark. They were unable to read 32 words correctly out of 40. While nine per cent scored full marks, 21 per cent failed to scrape half marks, according to results released yesterday
