The Trump Reality Distortion Filter: why so many
US Republicans are suspending their disbelief

As America speeds closer to the first primary elections, supporting Donald Trump increasingly requires a suspension of disbelief. It requires believing, for example, that, when he said of Fox News’ Megyn Kelly that she had “blood coming out of her wherever” (when she was questioning him during a debate) that he wasn’t suggesting anything untoward or misogynistic. It requires believing that when he said the American public won’t put Republican candidate Carly Fiorina in the White House, because “look at that face!” that he was not commenting on her attractiveness. And it requires believing that when he holds his arms

The presidency has changed Barack Obama. His hair has gone gray, which is to be expected, and he looks older, which is also to be expected, but his eloquence has been replaced by petulance and he has lost the power to persuade, which is something of a surprise. You can speculate that if the Obama of today and not Winston Churchill had led Britain in World War II, the Old Vic theater would now be doing “Hamlet” in German. The president has lost his voice, that is certain. The numbers say so. Obama has the approval of only 44?percent of

(Video) President Barack Obama was met with what appeared to be the U.N.´s version of the Oscars´ "wrap-it-up" music Monday after he significantly overran his allotted time to speak at a global climate change summit. Obama was one of 147 world leaders given a three-minute slot at the COP21 conference to outline their vision for the future of the planet. The president of the free world, however, had other ideas. More than eight and a half minutes into Obama´s address — and with no sign he was stopping soon — three beeps sounded across the auditorium, clearly audible to everyone present

While giving a press conference in Paris, President Barack Obama told reporters that the mass shootings that plague the United States just never happen in other countries. “With respect to Planned Parenthood, obviously, my heart goes out to the families of those impacted,” Obama said in response to a reporter’s question. “I mean, I say this every time we’ve got one of these mass shootings; this just doesn’t happen in other countries.” For those living under a rock, the city of Paris itself was just hit with a series of simultaneous terrorist attacks. The majority of 130 deaths were in mass shooting

In his most apocalyptic language to date, Pope Francis told reporters aboard the papal plane returning from Africa that the COP21 climate change conference in Paris is the last chance for humanity to avert environmental destruction. The pope discussed global warming and other issues during an hour-long press conference aboard the papal plane following his six-day trip to Africa. Asked whether he believes that the leaders gathered in Paris will take important steps to combat climate change, Francis said, “I’m not sure, but I can say that it is now or never.” Little was accomplished at the 1997 Kyoto conference,

I was a pro football fan as a boy back in the 1960s, when our local TV station in South Dakota featured Chicago Bears and, later, Green Bay Packers games. After that, for a long time I rarely watched a pro football game. This year, not being as busy as in the past, I have seen more NFL games than in any recent season. Yesterday I was home nursing a cold, and caught both the Vikings-Falcons game and the Patriots-Broncos game. Based on this year’s experience, I have concluded that penalties, along with endless video reviews of plays, have made the

WASHINGTON- House Republican leaders say they´re confident the $1.1 trillion spending bill now on the table will be approved by the deadline of Dec. 11, averting a government shutdown. In a closed-door meeting of Republican members of the House, Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., worked to keep members unified, telling them, "keep your schedules flexible, (because) we´re not going to allow Democrats to use the calendar against us," a source who was in the meeting told Politico. The comments reflect Ryan´s interest in a short-term funding bill if Democrats elect to delay proceedings, as well as his desire to discourage conflict
