White House Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett was one of the mobilizing forces behind the decision to light up the White House with the colors of the gay pride movement to celebrate the Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage. According to the Washington Post, Jarrett worked with gay rights organizations to pay for the display to avoid using taxpayer money. The idea came from one of Jarrett’s aides who was also the LGBT liaison in the White House. When Jarrett approached President Obama with the idea, he responded, “It’s a great idea if you can get it to work,” she told the Post. The

Eight hundred years and 11 days after the stamping of the Magna Carta, it’s been an appalling week at the Supreme Court for the Constitution and the rule of law. Today’s ruling is, in a sense, the Roe v. Wade of our generation. And I would think that even if I were gay and wanted to marry. As I noted on Twitter yesterday, it is entirely possible to like the outcome of a court ruling (or legislation) while being appalled at the process by which it was achieved. For instance, one can be both pro-choice and still believe (as in

Coeur d‘Alene, Idaho, city officials have laid down the law to Christian pastors within their community, telling them bluntly via an ordinance that if they refuse to marry homosexuals, they will face jail time and fines. The dictate comes on the heels of a legal battle with Donald and Evelyn Knapp, ordained ministers who own the Hitching Post wedding chapel in the city, but who oppose gay marriage, The Daily Caller reported. A federal judge recently ruled that the state’s ban on gay marriage was unconstitutional, while the city of Coeur d‘Alene has an ordinance that prevents discrimination based on sexual preference. Dr. Ben Carson has caused a major upset by coming in a confident first in the Western Conservative Summit’s straw poll in Denver, Colorado this weekend. Carson, who boomed about his anti-political credentials in his main stage speech last night, took 26 percent of the 871 votes cast, while Carly Fiorina, who also had clear support amongst conference delegates, took 23 percent. But the biggest blow of the weekend was for Rick Santorum, who landed on just two percent of the vote despite some noteworthy support from the audience during his speech. (Snip) There was clearly a more organised Carson and Fiorina presence

Identifying as a Christian comes with a set of baggage all its own. As the loudest Christian voices spout rightwing ideology – including in opposition to same sex marriage, which the US supreme court legalized on Friday – the Catholic priest molestation scandals drag on and the Westboro Baptist Church continues to exist, Christianity’s numbers are sharply declining in the US. But last October, I – a 33-year-old, progressive, openly gay man who spent much of my twenties as a crusading atheist and curious agnostic – was baptized and confirmed in the church. I’m unafraid to proclaim myself a disciple

Bristol Palin Strikes Back: "This

In response to the chorus of critics who attacked her after she announced she was pregnant, Bristol Palin posted a follow up blog post titled “My Little Blessing,” affirming her strong pro-life beliefs and clarifying some of the misrepresentations being made about her. Perhaps what is the most shocking is Palin’s statement that, despite what many assumed, this pregnancy was not unplanned. Palin made headlines back in 2008 when she became pregnant as a teenager while her mother, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, was running for Vice President. When she announced this second pregnancy just a few short weeks after

The P5+1 countries led by the United States under Barack Obama have caved in to Iranian demands and will not insist on inspections of nuclear installations as part of a deal on Iran;s nuclear weapons program, Channel 1 reported Sunday. The channel´s Arab affairs correspondent reported that the June 30 – Tuesday night – deadline for the talks has been set back to an unspecified date but that the negotiations are good natured and the feeling is that the deal is nearly done. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif was expected to fly to Tehran Sunday night for consultations on a final
