The latest polls show that President Obama´s approval ratings are in free fall like a hot air balloon with the fire extinguished; his approval rating has declined eight percentage points over the past month. CNN reporter Chris Cuomo described the decline as "dropping like a stone." Lara Brown of U.S. News and World Report, declared, "The Obama presidency becomes more Grant than Lincoln every day." Even his standing as a "leader" has shown a six-percentage-point drop among those who think he is a decisive and strong leader. Worse, CNN reports that half of the public no longer trust the president

Turkey warned on Monday it may bring in the army to help quell nearly three weeks of nationwide anti-government protests as two major union federations went on strike over police violence against demonstrators. The government raised the threat of putting soldiers on the streets after a weekend of violent clashes sparked by the eviction of campers occupying Istanbul´s Gezi Park, the epicentre of the protest movement. Police "will use all their powers" to end the unrest, deputy prime minister Bulent Arinc said in a televised interview. "If this is not enough, we can even utilise the Turkish armed forces

It is understood that a contingency plan is in place for the unlikely event that an attempt would be made on the President’s life. The Secret Service also have diplomatic immunity which will allow them to shoot to kill a would-be assassin without fear of prosecution. As part of the “evacuation route” plan, they would be able to spirit the President by chopper to one of the carriers where a jet is on standby to take him back to the United States.

Americans outraged by leaked information about two top-secret government surveillance programs are "not getting the complete story," President Obama told Charlie Rose in a PBS interview recorded Sunday for air Monday night - and the intelligence community is working on filling in the holes. One "legitimate critique" of the National Security Agency programs designed to track suspected terrorists by culling U.S. phone records and mining data from the servers of major Internet companies, the president conceded, is that because they´re classified, "the public may not fully" understand them. "That can make the public kind of nervous, right?"

It’s been two years since NASA’s space shuttle program came to an end, but thousands of Americans still dream of becoming astronauts. Eight of them – four men and four women – were introduced Monday as NASA’s astronaut candidate class for 2013. (Snip) The bios of the eight people selected will probably make you feel like a bit of a slacker. Two of them have PhDs and one is a physician training in sports medicine. Four have experience as test pilots for the Navy or Air Force. One person is working at the Pentagon on ways to defeat the homemade bombs that have plagued troops in Iraq and

Washington - After Republicans lost the presidential election and seats in both the House and the Senate last year, many in the party offered a stern admonishment: If we want to broaden our appeal, steer clear of divisive social and cultural issues. Yet after the high-profile murder trial of an abortion doctor in Philadelphia this spring, many Republicans in Washington and in state capitals across the country seem eager to reopen the emotional fight over a woman’s right to end a pregnancy. (Snip) The bill stands no chance of becoming law, with Democrats in control of the Senate and the White House.

Even as reports break about the size and scope of the National Security Agency’s vast data storage center in Utah, new details are emerging about a second massive NSA center in San Antonio, Texas. According to the Houston Chronicle, “Satellite and aerial imagery show that massive air conditioning units and backup generators have been added to the facility, which is now ringed by barbed-wire fencing. City permits and property tax records show that the complex has been dramatically expanded.” According to sources, the plant will supposedly translate intercepted communications from the NSA; the communications are then forwarded to Maryland

Tehran - President-elect Hassan Rowhani of Iran, speaking Monday for the first time since his election victory, said he wanted to reduce tensions with the United States but ruled out direct talks between the two estranged nations. In his first news conference after winning Friday’s presidential election promising more freedoms and better relations with the outside world, Mr. Rowhani called the issue of nonexistent relations between Iran and the United States “an old wound, which must be healed.” Iran, he said, wants to reduce tensions between the two countries, which have no diplomatic relations and are

An IRS supervisor working in Washington told congressional investigators that she personally reviewed applications from groups for tax-exempt status, in testimony that appears to show the agency’s scrutiny of conservative groups extended beyond the confines of the office in Cincinnati. Holly Paz, who was a supervisor in the Internal Revenue Service’s tax-exempt status division, indicated during an interview with congressional investigators that she did review such applications, but indicated that she believed “tea party” meant political advocacy in general — not necessarily conservative groups.

Washington - Pharmaceutical companies that pay rivals to keep less-expensive generic versions of best-selling drugs off the market can expect greater federal scrutiny after a Supreme Court ruling on Monday. In a 5-to-3 vote, the justices effectively said that the Federal Trade Commission can sue pharmaceutical companies for potential antitrust violations, a decision that is likely to increase the number of generic drugs in the marketplace and benefit consumers. Specifically, the justices threw out lower-court rulings that said the agreements were legal, provided that a deal did not keep a generic

Pro-life groups argue that Attorney General Eric Holder’s Justice Department has been assiduous in its efforts to prosecute pro-life advocates who (legally) counsel women outside of abortion clinics, but considerably less dogged in prosecuting the abortionists inside — and they are pointing to a recent revelation as a possible reason why. Watchdog.org reports: In October, Watchdog.org published Fulton County tax records showing Holder’s wife, Dr. Sharon Malone Holder – an obstetric and gynecological doctor at Foxhall OB/GYN in Washington, D.C. – and her sister, Margie Malone Tuckson,

Trenton — As Congress debates an overhaul to the federal immigration system, New Jersey lawmakers again took up controversial legislation today that would allow students living in the country illegally to pay in-state tuition at the state’s public colleges. The bill, dubbed the “Tuition Equality Act,” was approved by the state Assembly Budget Committee after a lengthy hearing in Trenton. The crowd in the chamber, which included immigrant students who have been pushing for the change for years, cheered as the committee moved the bill. The legislation will now go to the full Assembly for a vote.

President Obama defended his administration’s right to engage in extensive surveillance of U.S. communications in an interview with PBS host Charlie Rose, saying the programs had disrupted multiple terrorist plots and had adequate checks and balances. During the interview — which was conducted Sunday before Obama left for Europe and was set to air Monday night — the president took pains to distinguish his national security approach to those of former president George W. Bush and former vice president Richard B. Cheney. “The whole point of my concern, before I was president —

In the midst of all the big debates happening in Washington right now, one that’s getting less media attention is the immigration reform being taken up by Congress. The bill has divided Republicans and conservative commentators, with some of the latter offering dire warnings for the party’s future if it happens. California congressman Rana Rohrabacher is none too happy with his party taking up this mantle, saying on Wo*****Daily Radio that Marco Rubio and other immigration backers are using “weasel words” to deceive the public, and declaring that if House Speaker John Boehner allows the vote, then

Perry joins Sens. Rand Paul and Marco Rubio as the Republicans most likely to win the nomination, according to the aides, several of whom were involved in the past two presidential elections, and a handful of members including a key Senate conservative. The House last week voted to restrict implementation of the 2010 New START arms treaty with Russia until the Obama administration outlines its plans for nuclear cuts. The restriction is contained in the fiscal 2014 defense authorization bill that passed the House on Friday by a vote of 315 to 107. Section 1052 of the bill limits the Pentagon and Energy Department from spending any funds on nuclear forces reduction until two conditions are met. The limits would be lifted only after the Pentagon submits a plan required in law that outlines strategic nuclear cuts under New START.

Former US president Bill Clinton on Monday night urged Israel to work toward a two-state solution with the Palestinians, saying that he had never heard a credible alternative that would enable Israel to remain a Jewish and a democratic state. “No matter how many settlers you put out there [in the West Bank], the Palestinians are having more babies than the Israelis as a whole,” Clinton said, and thus demographics were working against Israel. Clinton was answering questions after a speech at the Peres Academic Center in Rehovot in honor of President Shimon Peres’s 90th birthday celebrations, which

In a speech that will no doubt incentivize Palestinians to continue their campaign of terror and warfare against Israel, former President Bill Clinton told Israel that it would have to make peace with the Palestinians if it wanted to remain Jewish and democratic. He said that thanks to demographic changes, Israel will have to separate from the Palestinian population in order to maintain its majority. This theory has been proved false repeatedly. Israel’s demographic majority in Israel will remain strong for decades upon decades. But the goal of the left is to

Sen. We failed to do that,” Rubio told Jonathan Karl on ABC News’ “This Week.” “This president failed to do that. So now your options
