CHICAGO -- The Obama administration has chosen a private attorney and former federal prosecutor who helped send former Illinois Gov. George Ryan to prison for corruption to head the U.S. attorney´s office in Chicago, Illinois´ senators announced Thursday. Zachary Fardon, 46, would replace Patrick Fitzgerald, who stepped down last summer to enter private practice. Fitzgerald rose to national prominence during more than a decade in the office and successfully convicted two Illinois governors, including Ryan. The U.S. Senate must confirm President Barack Obama´s nomination of Fardon. Fitzgerald issued a statement to The Associated Press calling Fardon "a terrific choice,"

President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden met with three illegal immigrants who have been granted deferred action legal status in the Oval Office Tuesday. Meanwhile, Obama still refuses to meet with any border security enforcement officers about any aspect of immigration reform. “From Justino Mora, Angie Kim and Mehdi Mahraoui, to Diana Colin and Kevin Lee,” a White House blog entry reads, “all of the stories they shared were full of hope and optimism that one day their family members and their broader communities could realize the dream of becoming citizens of a country that

The president may have forgotten something as he boarded Marine One this morning. On his way to the U.S. Naval Academy graduation ceremony on Annapolis, Md., President Obama didn’t return the salute of the marine standing guard at the door of Marine One, as he climbed the steps to the helicopter cabin. Obama soon ducked his head out, waved to the pilot, and jaunted back down the stairs to address the marine, shaking his hand. In the short video clip, one can’t hear the two men talking, so it’s unclear what exactly was said.

WASHINGTON - A long-simmering feud between establishment Republicans and tea partyers broke into full view Thursday, with Sen. John McCain accusing younger colleagues of overplaying their hands and tempting Democrats to change Senate rules that protect the minority party. Tactics for dealing with the government´s budget and debt became the latest quarrel In a string of them between McCain -sometimes joined by other traditionalist Republicans -and tea party champions such as Ted Cruz of Texas, Rand Paul of Kentucky, Mike Lee of Utah and Marco Rubio of Florida. Those four won Senate seats by defying the party establishment,

GREENVILLE, California -- An earthquake in far northeastern California was felt by thousands of people as far away as San Francisco and in two other states, but there have been no reports of injury or serious damage. The magnitude-5.7 quake broke dishes and shook mirrors when it struck at 8:47 p.m. Thursday, officials said. It was centered near Greenville, about 25 miles southwest of Susanville in far northeastern California, said Rafael Abreu, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey´s National Earthquake Center in Golden, Colo. There have been several aftershocks, including a magnitude 4.9 that struck early Friday morning.

Put aside the politics, and the question of who-knew-what-when. There are two policy problems highlighted by the controversies at the Internal Revenue Service and the Department of Justice. The first is the growth of 501(c)(4) groups into vehicles for anonymous and unlimited political spending. The second is the Obama administration’s overzealous prosecution of leaks. Unfortunately, for those who would like to see these policy problems resolved, the wrong party is angry about them and the wrong party is complacent.

Hundreds of Muslim immigrants have rampaged through parts of the Swedish capital of Stockholm, torching cars and buses, setting fires, and hurling rocks at police. The unrest -- a predictable consequence of Sweden´s failed model of multiculturalism, which does not encourage Muslim immigrants to assimilate or integrate into Swedish society -- is an ominous sign of things to come. The trouble began after police fatally shot an elderly man brandishing a machete in a Muslim-majority neighborhood. Although the exact circumstances of the May 13 incident remain unclear, police say they shot the 69-year-old man (his nationality has not been disclosed) in self-defense

On Michael Graham’s Massachusetts-based radio show on Thursday, National Review columnist Mark Steyn reacted to the treatment of Lois Lerner, the now-suspended head of the Internal Revenue Service’s division on tax-exempt organizations. Lerner, who had asserted her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination during an appearance before the House Oversight Committee in a hearing on Wednesday, was the object of ridicule by Steyn on the show. “Is this a republic or is it not?” Steyn said. “Because, if it is what a republic is then you guys wasted your whole time with your revolution — because they are basically saying

She had to endure the public humiliation of his sexting scandal, but now it turns out that Anthony Weiner’s wife was the driving force behind his comeback. Huma Abedin put her feelings of betrayal aside and backed her husband to run for mayor of New York in this year’s election. She has also been working her close connections to the Clinton family to get Mr Weiner access to wealthy and powerful donors who he so badly needs. Having been frozen out of politics when he quit his Congressional seat, Mr Weiner is now effectively relying on his wife

The conservative writer Quin Hillyer says he’s “laying down” his pen and running for Congress in Alabama. Hillyer, who most recently worked for The American Spectator, The Washington Times and The Washington Examiner, became the first to throw his hat in the contest after the unexpected resignation of Republican Rep. Jo Bonner on Thursday. "When an opportunity comes to do something good, one must grab it,” Hillyer wrote on the American Spectator blog. Hillyer, once an aide to former Louisiana Rep. Bob Livingston, is well-known in the political community of Mobile, Alabama, where he now lives.

Washington - President Obama, seemingly preoccupied, forgot one piece of protocol as he boarded Marine One on his way to Annapolis Friday. Obama walked past the Marine at the bottom of the helicopter´s stairs and didn´t give the traditional salute. Realizing his mistake upon entering Marine One the president pivoted in the doorway, jogged back down, shook hands and spoke briefly with the Marine before boarding the helicopter for a second time.

Key Democrats say Internal Revenue Service official Lois Lerner didn´t give up her Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination by giving an opening statement at a House hearing on Wednesday. Democrats on the Oversight panel said they want Lerner to testify about the IRS’s targeting of conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status, and are not defending her decision to invoke the Fifth Amendment. But Lerner’s Constitutional rights are clear, the Democrats argue, and committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) will be wasting the panel’s time and resources waging a losing battle against her attorneys while the FBI conducts

The United States pretends to believe that Russia is a credible partner in resolving the Syrian crisis. Russia cannot believe its luck and carries on as before, but with a greater sense of impunity. According to The New Times (an independent Russian journal), when Secretary of State John Kerry traveled to Moscow earlier this month and was first forced to wait two hours to meet with a bored and fidgety Vladimir Putin, he really had only one pressing matter to discuss: the imminent transfer of S-300 surface-to-air missiles to Bashar al-Assad. Damascus had already deposited $100 million of $900 million to Vnesheconombank (VEB

Hard power has not been in vogue since the Iraq War turned badly in about 2004. In foreign policy journals and at elite conferences, the talk for years has been about "soft power," "the power of persuasion" and the need to revitalize the U.S. State Department as opposed to the Pentagon: didn´t you know, it´s about diplomacy, not military might! Except when it isn´t; except when members of this same elite argue for humanitarian intervention in places like Libya and Syria. Then soft power be damned.

In a world measured by 140-character bursts and 60-minute news cycles, it´s often hard to see the quiet but inexorable forces that will define what sort of world we´ll see by mid-century and beyond. But those factors are no less real. Take the contest for superpower status -- a competition several contenders are waging in earnest, while the world´s indisputable member of the superpower club, the United States, seems unsure whether it can retain the title, or even wants to.

Huntsman says he’s undecided on his future plans and the 2016 race, but the new Red Rock PAC will give him a perch from which to speak and travel — as well as give him access to a network of candidates, donors and potential future surrogates for any presidential candidacy. “It’s way early,” Huntsman told POLITICO about the 2016 race. “For this year and next year, it will be more about talking about

The bill in the assembly is co-sponsored by Assembly members Brian Kolb, Crystal Peoples-Stokes and Jane Corwin. Last month, a Kaiser Foundation poll pegged Obamacare’s public support at a tepid 35 percent. A new survey from Fox News confirms that finding. Asked if they’d rather to keep the new law in place or erase it from the history books and revert back to the 2009 system, Americans say they’d strongly prefer turning back the clock: 22. Do you think it would be better to leave the new health care law in place, or would it be better to go back to the health care system that was in place in 2009? Better to keep law:

At least nine cars were torched and two schools and a police station were set ablaze as riots swept through Stockholm´s immigrant-dominated suburbs early Friday for the fifth straight night, police and firefighters said. The riots, which have shattered Sweden´s image abroad as a peaceful and egalitarian nation, have sparked a debate about the assimilation of immigrants, who make up about 15 percent of the population. Many of the immigrants who have arrived due to the country´s generous refugee policy struggle to learn the language and find employment, despite numerous government programmes.

It was a story about...Carney and his favorite rock band. “Benghazi and the IRS have kept Carney scrambling, and he hasn’t had much time to listen to ‘English Little League,’ the latest album from the Ohio indie-rock band [Guided by Voices] he has affectionately name-dropped in more than one news briefing.” Critics want Carney canned, but the Post wants him to feel happy about the “beer-soaked brilliance”

They are issues that have occurred that have to be addressed. I don’t think they rise to the level of a scandal,” he said. “We had a bunch of idiots at IRS
