On Oct. 21, 13 of the nation's leading professional agricultural, biological, chemical and geological organizations sent a joint letter to the U.S. Senate urging it to adopt policies that would limit U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. "Observations throughout the world make it clear that climate change is occurring, and rigorous scientific research demonstrates that greenhouse gases emitted by human activities are the primary driver," they wrote. Hartford, Conn. - A memorial to honor a Sept. 11 victim from a small northwestern Connecticut town has been halted by the unexpected conflict arising from his father's insistence it say his son was murdered by ''Muslim terrorists.' Town officials in Kent are balking, saying it would be inappropriate to single out a religious group in a project on town property and paid for with taxpayers' money. WASHINGTON — President Obama exhorted Democrats on Saturday to approve a sweeping overhaul of health care and to “answer the call of history” as the House began debating legislation that would transform the nation’s health insurance system. Democrats quickly took a significant step toward passage of the plan by surmounting a key procedural hurdle in approving the rules for debate. Despite a sharp party divide over how strictly to limit spending for abortions, leading Democrats

MOSCOW — Along with the perennial calls for “land for farmers” and “factories for workers,” Communists who marched in Moscow on the Saturday anniversary of the 1917 revolution offered a slogan of more recent vintage: “Russia without Putin.” As the Nov. 7 holiday approached, leaders of Russia’s Communist Party — with 13 percent of the electorate the country’s largest opposition faction — have made it clear that they prefer President Dmitri A. Medvedev to his

Last week’s stream of economic data points to the emergence of a great divide. On the positive side, annualized third-quarter GDP was up 3.5 percent compared to the prior quarter. (Keep in mind that this is an ''advance'' estimate from the Dept. of Commerce. Stay tuned for revisions.) But consumer spending for September fell 0.5 percent. That’s the biggest dip since December 2008

The Fort Hood killings, perpetrated by Major Malik Nadal Hasan a psychiatrist by training, no matter what the judiciary reports conclude is, for now, the largest single terror act in America since 9/11. This quantitative finding will take into consideration dramatic change in the data released by authorities. However, the most important matter confronting us now is that we must not fail to properly analyze Hasan's possible motives.

One thing not being mentioned openly about the Fort Hood massacre of 13 American soldiers and the wounding of 30 others, is whether this was a version of suicide bombing. That is, was the suspect, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, something of a Jihadist "sleeper" intent on replicating a suicide bomber to maximize his opposition to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan? We don't know ... yet ... but it's a spectre so alarming one hardly

The staples were removed from a list of rationed foods that most Cubans depend on, permitting them to buy as much of the products as they want – at 20 times more than they used to. The move comes amid efforts by Raul Castro's government to scale back Cuba's subsidy-rich, cash-poor economy. Lunches which cost so little they were almost free lunches were eliminated from some state-cafeterias in September.

You'll never hear a woman wearing Colombian jeans ask, "Do these make my butt look big?" -- because that's the whole point. Colombian jeans -- commonly called "butt lifting" jeans -- are touted as jeans that raise your derriere naturally, without fillers or rods. The jeans are wildly popular among Latinas.
